My DREAM Lotus Esprit nearly CAUGHT FIRE before I bought it

  • Casey Putsch finally located his dream car, a 1985 Lotus Esprit Turbo in white over red. This car is similar to to the James Bond Lotus from "For Your Eyes Only" that was driven by Roger Moore. Upon meeting the owner and reviewing the car before paying for it, Casey discovered the car showed zero oil pressure. Casey rigged up a way to read the oil pressure before buying the car and nearly caught the car on fire from a short circuit. Does Casey buy his dream car for future Casey's 80s Garage episodes?

The 80s had some interesting cars, to say the least, and the Lotus Esprit, the baseline for almost all supercars of the time, was among one of the most interesting, and unlike most of them of the time, is actually affordable now, and doesn't have insane appreciation rates.

    • @ashleyhamman
      @ashleyhamman 3 года назад +2

I think that the affordability is the main pull of them now. Why wait through decades of savings for an M1, assuming life goes in a good direction, when early Esprits exist at a tenth of the cost?

It was designed in the 70's.
Its a 70's car. It takes 10 years for pencils and rulers to get product into production.
I see it as a mid 1950's car.

  • @thomasempacher9337

That car is a great choice Casey. I had an '82 dry sump turbo. It is in the top two of my list of cars owned. Whether the Esprit is number one or the S1 Elise is number one depends on my mood. They beat out some fairly exotic competition to be the top two. Mine was pretty reliable over seven years of ownership but it was only five years old when I bought it.
Check the condition of the fuel tanks and the balance pipe that runs between them. They can rust out. The brakes are a little bit marginal under very hard road use (by that I mean beyond sensible and legal) so I am pretty sure they would not be up to track use. You can throw all the maintenance in the world at the stock braking system to ensure they are 100%, I know I did, and they are still not quite up to the mark.
Always leave the car in gear if you park on a slope. The handbrake mechanism lacks leverage and as the discs cool down there is a risk the car will set off downhill.
    Some fun facts for you:
    1. If the electric radio aerial fails you have to take the door off to replace it.
    2. The factory approved procedure for replacing a handbrake cable involves cutting a hole in the sill, repair the sill and then paint. I have never heard of anyone having to do that but it's in the service manual.
    3. Assuming the clock is in the roof liner, as mine was, if you launch the car really hard the plastic clock cover will fly off. Bonus points for catching the cover before the shift to second.
I hope you enjoy the Esprit as much as I did. Good luck.

Check the rear subframe very well before enjoying yourself too much.

Unfortunately you're revealing your age group.
This was brand new at the time and is full of the old world stuff.
Its made by an establishment that never fitted into the 1980's culture.
Women were already spitting on this male shovenistic product.
Hiring sheena was an insiders joke.
Roger made sure to keep everyone calm and sell a worthwhile product to the world.
Its probably 1950's with a twist.
And roger is responsible for that twist.
They got away with the 1950's horrible nasty joke on society because roger is actually a nice guy.
And because the children of the 1970's trusted roger.
We paid for the movie and nobody was going to attack the children of the 1970's.
Our fathers bashed into us that roger wasn't upto seans level.
If we said we liked roger we were beaten up with punches to our head.
You're not going to sugar coat the 1980's.
James Bond is 1950's and don't you forget it.

@@dreyn7780 I think you're revealing your abusive background and your jaded view towards it more than what the film has to do with anything.
      And honestly chauvinism?
The Roger films are hardly that when they're laughing at how piss poor Lotus quality is.
I think what you're thinking of is misogyny.
And there's a great big disconnect between book Bond and movie Bond that Roger and Sean helped make the gap even wider.
Roger opposed to the scene where he twisted Miss Anders' arm and made the scriptwriters make him more of a lover than an abuser because that's what he wanted it to be.
I know for a fact that Lois Chiles from Moonraker heard a bad joke on set from Cubby but it seems to have been a bigger misunderstanding that anything.
There isn't one Bond girl that said they didn't want or liked doing the part other than the ones that wanted to stir up controversy afterwards.
      Are Bond's hands clean? No.
There's always a "damsel in distress" and the one that gets sacrificed in most of the old ones.
But don't think that wasn't thrown back at Bond, even in 1965's Thunderball Fiona lectures him about Goldfinger and the woman returning to side of right and virtue...etc.
All I really got from the Bond movies was a fun time. If you read that far into it that I think nobody really cared about because everything in the 70s wasn't politically correct, you're absolutely kidding me.
The general public loved Roger by at least 1977. He was already pop culture because he was The Saint.
The fact that it's a product of the 50s doesn't mean much, Bond is undeniable pop culture that though it was an anomaly in the 80s doesn't mean it didn't have its place.
It shows more about you than anyone else here to feel this way about it.

Congrats on the Lotus Turbo Esprit purchase! I have an 83 "Investor Edition" (#32 of 50 made. Lotus offered new investors in the USA who dropped $200K and above a piece of the company and a special version of the Esprit. There were 47 investors, and Lotus offered 3 to the general public. They got the first removable sun roof, upgraded leather and paint, balanced/blueprinted engines, a hand painted "Special Edition #xx" on the outside of the drivers door, and a sterling silver steering wheel badge with the investors name). I dropped a cam belt on my second test drive around the block when it was delivered! Apparently previous owner left it outside for 7-8 years and toasted the belt. Ouch$$$. If in doubt, always change the cam belt! Engine now rebuilt and ready to drop in. I'm looking forward to some serious seat time, and of coarse your content! My car needs interior/exterior redo next. Cheers!

Can't wait to see what you do with this.... if you need a Lotus S4 engine and transaxle that were rebuilt (with electronic fuel injection), let me know. I'm selling all the drivetrain out of my Esprit so I can LS swap it. :D

@@chandrab I have spent who knows how many thousands of dollars at J.A.E.... great guys, but now parts are becoming harder and harder to come by. I still love the look of my car and want to make it the car people seeing it EXPECT it to be.
Why on earth would they build an "exotic" sports car with only 215hp!?! This car looks like it should easily hit 180mph and yet it hates going over 140mph.
My goal now is to make the car what it SHOULD have been... and I can hardly wait to give my neighbor (Stradman) a run for his money with any of his cars! :)

@@RealRickCox have you tried SJ motor sports for parts? I got it for straight from the lotus CEO why they stuck with the UN1. They tried going to a custom gearbox but the costs at their volume and costs to qualify were prohibitive. Renault was very helpful and at theater couple of years they were only customer for the UN1 and Renault was still hand building them in France. When they shut down the factory, so went the un1 and went the esprit. (One of the reasons)

I (briefly) had a '92 Esprit. How tall are you? I'm 5'9, which was a problem because the top of the steering wheel occupied quite a bit of my field of vision, to the point where it gave me a slight headache from constantly shifting focus between the wheel and the road. Neither the seat nor the wheel were adjustable. :/ Really, really neat car, though.

The engine cover comes out so easy, then you could get into the back lean over the engine, put a piece of foam on top of the engine to be more comfortable. Then you can see in so easily. The previous owner should have known about the easy removal of the engine cover….🥴
