People “drag “ you because you focus and dwell on it and make it a big deal trying to “figure it out” …who cares how they dress, who cares if they are gay or bi or straight.. it is art , so who cares? Why do you get so hung up on it? Just enjoy the music and have fun with it.
Flo Rida, Sampled "the S**t" out of this song. (in a good way) Pete Burns "People always want to know - am I gay, bi, trans or what? I say, forget all that". He was addiction to cosmetic surgery. He had a botched rhinoplasty. A botched lip augmentation led to an infection in his lips caused by the injectable fillers. Infection spread to the rest of his face creating severe damage. Related health problems lead to pulmonary embolisms and blood clots & kidney ailments. He passed in October 2016 (aged 57). Even though they were rivals, Boy George paid for his funeral. Actor Paul Rudd did a great recreation of "You Spin Me Round
Not drag, just '80s fashion. If you delve more into the music of that era, you'll run into plenty of sharp-dressed dudes with long hair and makeup. It's not a mark of any particular orientation, just the style of the day.
@@kbrewski1 Sure, Boy George is gay. So is Rob Halford of Judas Priest, and he's pretty much the exact opposite of that look. Meanwhile, Dee Snider (Twisted Sister), Mike Score (A Flock of Seagulls), Robert Smith (The Cure), Simon Le Bon (Duran Duran)...all straight (BP already mentioned Prince). As someone who lived through that era, I can tell you that women went absolutely apesh*t for that androgynous look. Those pretty boys with eyeliner, teased-out hair, and tight pants would 100% steal your girl. ;)
Black Pegasus, you need to go deeper into alt rock, new wave whatever you want to call it in the 80-90s. There's much more going on that the basic rock music
Wow, you are so obsessed with stereotypes. I was raised in the 50s & 60s and had one idea of what male and females look like. Part of the rock world is to push and break stereotypes. I get you were raised one way but I hope this journey you are on will help you get to the point that you don't judge a book by its cover.
Try to remember that people his age grew up in the era when all toys for girls were pink. Powerpuff girls era. DIsney princesses. Hell I remember a year in the 1990s where I couldn't find women's running shoes that weren't pink. Really annoying. I think people raised in the 1960s and 1970s were subject to less gender rigidity than then or now, with less assumption that slight divergences like women with short hair or men with makeup = gay or trans. Just self expression.
@user-nz8vd7es7k Did I say I didn't like this channel? No. I have observed that he frequently brings the subject up. I am older than him. I am probably around the age of his grandparents. I know all about the time where it was very clear how women should dress and how men should dress. For the 60s on until today popular music has pushed those stereotypes. Yes, some artist are gay and sing about their own experiences. I like this channel and Black Pegasus because he explores other genres.
Pete Burns, the lead singer, is sadly no longer with us. He was from Liverpool. I believe he had gender and or body dysmorphia as later in life he took steps to change his appearance to more feminine. Regardless he had an incredible voice and this song is a banger. ❤
We were too busy having a great time in the 80’s and 90’s at that time this type of look and sound want it was on jukeboxes everywhere!!! We didn’t care about about their sexual preferences then gay/not gay/ bi a lot of keys in fishbowls!!!😎😎😎
We had a lot of innovative artists and bands, some were, quite frankly.... bizarre, but the music was phenomenal!! Classic rock, country, Miami sound, new wave, punk rock, hair bands (like "Twisted Sister") It was a great time in music!!
Dont forget the 80's were crazy, cloth hair style ect ect ect ,so very hard to know , me as a teen i was looking alot like him hair and cloth style and i LOVE lady :) i wis i could go back in the 80's again it was so much fun .
BP, just enjoy the music and not overjudge what you don't understand. This is a classic pop song, one of the best of the 80's. You're kind of oldfashioned
I don't think he's old fashioned, he just seems to focus too much on what folks are (gender) or what their sexuality was (though as he said he doesn't really care) Back when all the 70s and 80s music came out, we didn't care back then either. Having lived through Bowie, Bolan and Sweet! But then, I'm from the UK.
"Old Fashioned" is being kind. Bigoted is the better word. I wonder if he knows a huge amount of people would not even give him a chance or watch his "judging" because they JUDGE him. Is a bit hypocritical.
Because it gives context. You don't just blindly enjoy something because it "moves you." I love this song, listened to them in the 80's, have no issues, as with MANY straight, gay, bi, etc. music from the time. But many straight people don't know that Frankie's "Relax" is about anal sex. It's important, because a lot of the community were laughing at the people that didn't know what they were dancing to, and it was done WITH that in mind. Is that malicious? I'll let you decide. So it's important. Sorry, you're incorrect.
It was the eighties. We reinvented so much. I am still into goth nights 🌙 🖤 at 61 years old!! It's so much fun!!! I just love what music can do. Make me smile, think, or dance- maybe even cry!!❤

In the UK you get used to men dressed as women and women dressed as men at a very early age. At pantomimes around Christmas. It's nothing unusual, nothing to be scared of. I can't see why Americans get so worked up about such things.
Welcome to New Wave. So many bands. Adam Ants, Culture Club, Human League, Pseudo Echo, Fine Young Cannibals etc. We didn't care what they looked like, how they dressed, just if they created great music. You want to really freak try "You Think You're a Man" by Divine
We danced our asses off to this song, and many more like it. This song is a complete banger. And please, don´t make a fuss about androgynity or men wearing makeup. Lol... You're cool man. I was born in 1972 and grew up in the '80s. Growing up in the '80s, plenty of men in entertainment wore a lot of makeup. Dead Or Alive, Boy George, guys in Glam Metal, Michael Jackson, and so on. It was the norm. Boomers didn't like it but us Gen Xers paid more attention to the music than the image.
I was actually coming to say the same thing cause I was born in 1972 as well. Lol. I remember having a hard time getting over the fact that Bon Jovi had better hair than me. Lol
Boomers? 🤣 Boomers had Elton John, David Bowie and The New York Dolls. Boomer rockers had Rob Halford. Most rockers of any generation are not fans of this music. 🤣
This was a huge success at the time and no serious 80's playlist can be legit without "You spin me round (like a record). The sound immediately reminds me of London's dance clubs in the mid-eighties and bears the trademark of the infamous trio of producers Stock, Aitken and Waterman who had the monopoly of the British pop charts in the late eighties. Besides Dead or Alive, other protegees include Rick Astley, Bananarama, Kylie Minogue, Mel and Kim and many others. They discovered this tricky synth and electronic drum loops formula that made every song a hit: "Never give you up", "Venus", "I should be so lucky"... From 1985 to 1990 they produced eight UK N.1 singles and 3 US N.1 singles. The Dead or Alive lead singer is called Pete Burns and he was all a character back in the day but also in later years he wasn't joking. He sadly developed an addiction to cosmetic surgery and he stated he had over 300 surgeries. And yes, he's gay..."like happy!" (citation needed).
A JAM! This song just pumps. Dance clubs were filled when this song comes out. In the 80's androgyny was really common. So many artists/bands glammed it up to cross over the look b/w male & female. Even rock bands like Poison, Motley Crue and others looked like woman early on. For this group, Pete Burns was the real deal. He wasn't just using it as marketing. He was a guy that eventually had surgery to look more and more female. But the dude had a voice! The song did get a second life when it was used in the movie "The Wedding Singer", which was hysterical. Also check out their other hit - "Brand New Lover"
Androgeny was part of the music scene in the 80's, no one got it twisted. We grew up with David Bowie, Boy George, Pete Burns, Grace Jones.... No Biggie, was just a glam rock evolving into the 80s. No need to get all 'transy', we just enjoyed the colourful scene. It was effing awesome!! So good watching you enjoy this.... An absolute anthem in my Youth!!
Pete Burns was an icon in Liverpool in the late 1970's early 80's, he worked in a record shop called PROBE. Pete had this style back in 1978 the way he dressed in all black and looked with his black contact lenses was totally unique and copied by Boy George which become the source of rivalry between them! His first ban The Mystery Girls then become Dead or Alive. Pete was married to Lynne and later had a civil partnership/husband. Pete was a big guy and good luck to anyone who tried to insult him. Pete Burns and his unique style was around for years before Culture Club and Boy George hit the scene! He was an icon and a real character on the Punk/New Wave scene in the late 70's early 80's. R.I.P to Pete Burns a talent who had his style, look and thunder copied!
Dead or Alive was one of my FAVORITE bands in my teen years. I have seen them in concert multiple times and enjoyed their CDs and live performances. This is quintessentially 1980's music for me.....dance clubs, concerts, parties, etc. Thank you for your review and critique of this song.
Glad you did this song. That man had one hell of a voice. Love your comments about not judging. Judge the music 👍 Your daughter would trip on Poison. Check out their album cover.
The story in short: the band have been struggling so long, they decided revamp their sound and get the Stock-Aitken-Waterman workshop to do a Hi-NRG makeover for their fresh songs. It was quite a "hard labour" (they made 5 different mixes only for this one), almost escalated into violence, but when they completed You Spin Me Round (the Murder Mix we hear here was the winner) and it started to circulating in the clubs and radio, everyone felt it would be a hit (this started the SAW trio's fame which would hold on to early '90s), even the record company and wanted it to have a video ASAP to show in the number one British TV music shows, in Top of The Pops above all (we're still before the start of MTV Europe). The problem: the time and budget was too tight so the band could rent the studio for an afternoon only and they could use only those props they found there or brought by themselves. The rest is history 🙂
It is always fun to see Boy George's reaction when you mention Pete Burns to him! PROBE the record shop Pete worked in 1978 Liverpool was the coolest place to be seen and buy your records and merch from and Pete was the coolest dude in that era
I'm so old I have this on a record .. it's a 12in single known as a dance mix and I also have I ran from a flock of seagulls on a single lol.. of course pre Wedding Singer which I recommend you to watch if you haven't seen it 🎸
My sister worked in a record store, and collected the life size cardboard cut outs of her favorite artists. She asked me one night if she could leave some stuff from work at my apartment, since she was going to a club nearby. I agreed. When I got home at midnight, dead tired, she had put a life sized cut out of Pete Burns facing my door! It scared me to death, but I turned it to face the wall and went to bed.
This was 1985, New Wave music was the rave and this was the style. People wore long sleeve satin tops with broaches at the neck, and the higher you got your hair the better! Clubs were all about dancing and having a great time, it was awesome!! 🤩
I loved this song and so wanted his hair in the 80s…but Boy George of Culture Club is still my fav. When no one is watching…I can still do those dancing arm movements. Great video!

The 80's were many things, but above all musically they were FUN!! I miss those days. I know most of the country wasn't up to speed but where I lived at the time, no one cared who you slept with as long as you were a good human and kind to people.
Your getting dragged because as an American you haven't had the musical education in British music that has a lot of genres that Americans didn't experience at the time. This band was part of The New Romantic Period along with bands like Spandau Ballet , Ultra Vox ect . This was a reaction to Punk and the far right politics of Margret Thatchers Conservative Party .
In America it was just part of the 2nd British Invasion.... it was odd, stranger, videos clearly visually wild then and also today... yet it got bought, promoted because of the music and most did not push that narrative that would cancel it today. We already had Disco cancelled for its roots and similar community that grew it.... so this had its door opened in the 80s..... and diversity in the Rock era continued even in the Brits in these genres had hits.... Boy George had a few hits... others less outward visually very different.... We look at the outfits and looks of our Big Hair bands even home-grown and they could and did ware outfits seen as flamboyant today. All was seen as their CONCERT OUTFITS vs daily worn on streets, or all had big permed hair on white dudes. The music also had a bit of a revival with Lady Gaga into pop again in the 2000s and then powers in the industry so consolidated it that they controlled what we hear.... powers-that-be chose the Rock Era was to end... fed us half 2010s rock... sort of and rap/hip hop.... till they chose to have all of top 20 basically rap/hip hop songs and promoting non-white groups and singers was very quick.... it even fed into our political aspects today... all too quick a push.... thru today into Country music new artist sounding more like those others with intense auto-tune sounding voices that some see as perverting that genre.
What the hell does being an American have to do with it?!? I'm an American and was very well aware of this song and all the other popular music coming out of the UK and elsewhere at the time. He's getting dragged by people who are too lazy and/or ignorant to listen and comprehend what he has said multiple times about himself and his upbringing. I give him props for being honest and making a conscious effort to listen to music he never was exposed to growing up. And did we miss that he said he loves the song?!?
As an American, I don't know if you realize how pompous your first sentence sounds, or if you were intentionally being passive aggressive because you secretly despise us. We just like music. That's it. Is it a requirement for us to have a degree in Brittish culture to enjoy British music? Is this where we are? 😂 Chillax dude. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

@@becomethestar Apparently also... that comment person does not realize that this is also a DISCO/TECHNO labeled song of 84 and hit #11 in the US in 85. DISCO IS AMERICAN IN ORIGIN FULLY. There is a Disco ball in the video also. So it makes little sense to deny AMERICAN MUSICAL INFLUENCE basically in most British music. Even the Beatles credited American music from Rockabilly of Elvis, Motown, Blues etc. with inspiration for them and they also did songs as them. It is the references in the video and look and fashions etc. that was questionable then and even today would be.... not about the music that was at the very tail end and post Disco Era... yet its influence continued as we hear here and into House music and the robotic beat of Techno added. Even in 85... MTV was still young and not even in Europe yet that came late 80s. I know I in the mid-80s still did not view it though we had cable being rural..... So this video meant nothing to many who never saw it till later anyway. The SONG and MUSIC CARRIED ITSELF and was not about how EDUCATED Americans were on BRITISH MUSIC.... How about how educated that person that commented on Americans was on American musical INFLUENCE including here???
It looked silly to me. A lot of the crappy synth pop dreck of the 80s looked and sounded silly. It's a genre not to be very proud of. It just showed how great the 70s was.

Glam rock goes back into the late 60s and early 70s with TRex and other pro formers, including David Bowie. It was a strong influence on some New Wave and “hair rock”. A lot of them originated in England, though some Americans took it up. If I’m not mistaken it’s one of the reasons Kiss put in their makeup.

Elton John is gay. David Bowie was androgynous in the first part of his career. I hope you know of Boy George. The new romantic fashion trend of the 80s was huge in the UK. Princess Diana's wedding dress was done by designers of the new romantic era.

Ya he shouldn't have had plastic surgery. He was handsome before the plastic surgery. It's like Mickey Rork he has good lookin when he started out but then he had plastic surgery & ruined his looks.
He was beautiful, it broke my heart watching his decline 😢❤
Yes this is the original song, all the others are copies. Marilyn Manson did a great cover
Manson never touched this song. The cover you are referring to is from the band Dope. Not sure how people assumed this considering everyone has access to the internet.

Pete Burns was a man not to be messed with. He would take on anyone. Sharp, clever ,articulate and a big focker to boot!
I remember him on big brother, wouldn’t have wanted a tongue lashing from him
I can't see it now without Paul Rudd 🤣
LMBO!! I forgot about that lol 😂😂
Man, that was brilliant! Especially watching them side by side.
I was going to mention this! That was so funny and Paul did an amazing job covering it.
One of the best parodies ever. A must watch after watching this video.
😂
I never gave his look a second thought when this came out. He was just a musician with a great song!
"We're all born naked, the rest is drag". RuPaul
Bullsheet. Who are you kidding. Should we start with BOY GEORGE?
@@virginiawenzel8189
He's barely scratched the surface of the 70s, the best decade for music hands down.
A great singer from the 80's to check out is Terence trent Derby. Wishing Well or Sign your Name
"Sign Your Name" is an absolutely filthy song, and I wish more people would react to it. 👍
In this case, it wasn't tough. What he saw was what he was.
It’s his channel it’s FREE! Don’t like his opinion you’re also FREE it leave!
Good voice great song
He was all kinds of messed up!!!
LOVE YOUR OPINIKNS!!!
Wrong side of the water, but close enough !
It's sad he had those struggles. He is wonderful singing this & I love his look
He changed his looks so much. He makes the Botched list
For bad plastic surgery.
We were too busy having a great time in the 80’s and 90’s at that time this type of look and sound want it was on jukeboxes everywhere!!! We didn’t care about about their sexual preferences then gay/not gay/ bi a lot of keys in fishbowls!!!😎😎😎
Yes keep it positive. Incredible voice.
CHECK OUT TWISTED SISTER "I WANNA ROCK", HARD ROCK METAL DRAG LIKE NO OTHER ! LOL THEY ROCKED THE 80'S ! SINGER DEE SNYDER IS A BOSS !!!
We had a lot of innovative artists and bands, some were, quite frankly.... bizarre, but the music was phenomenal!!
Classic rock, country, Miami sound, new wave, punk rock, hair bands (like "Twisted Sister")
It was a great time in music!!
I don't think he's old fashioned, he just seems to focus too much on what folks are (gender) or what their sexuality was (though as he said he doesn't really care)
Back when all the 70s and 80s music came out, we didn't care back then either. Having lived through Bowie, Bolan and Sweet! But then, I'm from the UK.
Not the best, sorry

I don't think we really gave this much thought in the 80's. Lots of bands had androgynous looks, but Pete was Pete...

Every thing about the video is the 80’s. Just the way it was back then.
The beginning of the decline of great music. By the late 90s, it was pretty much over.
In the UK you get used to men dressed as women and women dressed as men at a very early age. At pantomimes around Christmas. It's nothing unusual, nothing to be scared of. I can't see why Americans get so worked up about such things.

We danced our asses off to this song, and many more like it. This song is a complete banger. And please, don´t make a fuss about androgynity or men wearing makeup. That's so true now I think about it.. He completely transformed himself into a woman, but wasn't particularly feminine or tried to act like a female, he was still him, just looked like a woman.
You forgot to mention he went trans too.

Boomers? Not the younger boomers in any case, this was also their music.
I’m a Baby Boomer who agrees with you. Don’t put us all in the same box.

EVERYBODY wore crazy clothes and makeup in the 80‘s!!
Not sure if you have reacted to Duran Duran yet but they have some really great songs from this era like Rio and Hungry Like The Wolf.
Duran Duran were / are fabulous. It's amazing that the UK was completely accepting of the new romantic fashion era. Long hair, makeup etc
I grew up with this awesome music - and I live in South Africa ... 😂🎉❤
It's stunning and brave on steroids and I'm all in on this great song.
I still sing this song all the time... earworm. I love the video recreation that Jimmy Fallon did with Paul Rudd... it was perfection!
Yay. More early 80s new wave. What can I say? It was the early 80s, crazy clothes and crazy videos

It is always fun to see Boy George's reaction when you mention Pete Burns to him! PROBE the record shop Pete worked in 1978 Liverpool was the coolest place to be seen and buy your records and merch from and Pete was the coolest dude in that era
I'm so old I have this on a record .. it's a 12in single known as a dance mix and I also have I ran from a flock of seagulls on a single lol.. of course pre Wedding Singer which I recommend you to watch if you haven't seen it 🎸
This was the 80s where anything went. It's not what I go out of my way to listen to, but it still gets airplay on the radio, and I do love his voice.
Most likely we listened to this while swilling Mad Dog 20\20. That made everything awesome til the next day.

Glam rock goes back into the late 60s and early 70s with TRex and other pro formers, including David Bowie. It was a strong influence on some New Wave and “hair rock”. A lot of them originated in England, though some Americans took it up. If I’m not mistaken it’s one of the reasons Kiss put in their makeup.
