aaaaah Bookies 860 Punk Rock Club!! I was about 18 or 19 yrs old. I seen so many bands there! WHAT a time in Detroit!! Seen Patti Smith in the audience, she didn't play that night, just enjoying the music and the scene. The place was small but it rocked!! Big Rich Dorris probably has tapes from there.. The good Ole days. After that there was Todd's, then the scene completely fizzled out!! It was one of my favorite haunts! Gay in the day, punk at night!I! Not too many people still around from that era, but all the same never be another Bookies aka Frank Gagons. Great Art Deco building, too bad its gone!!!!
I remember fervently reading about the fabled Bookie's and Lili's in those hallowed pages of Creem magazines as a young teenager. Even made it to the former Lili's back in 2008 while in Detroit to play a show.
+crapple009 I'm from Hamtramck, and saw alot of shows there, The Mutants, The Reruns, The Sillys, Pig/Flirt..was also a cool Hamtramck dump. oh, and yes I played there and Lili caught me writing my bands name in the toilet, and my band The Krash Ratz were" Black Balled" I have forgiven Lili( R.I.P.) about this.
Yep the Mom an her two son's. Wonder if they're still around. My haunt was Bookies 860 Punk Club on the Westside! Lilli' punked out too. It wasn't strange to see Johnny from The ROMANTICS running around. Or Patti Smith sitting watching the show at Bookies. A lot of peops passed away from that era.... the drugs. WHAT A TIME in Tha D!
Sureshot booked me there once....had a cool stage, good room. I think I moved equipment outta there for the Motor City Bad Boyz...man the good ol' days.
Great to hear so many coments about Sure Shot.. that place on the east side was my first into to the whole scene. Wonder what happened ot Cameron Wesley my old boyfriend . So many good times at Bookies and Hamtramck ... so mcuh talent and freedom . I remeber seeing Devo at the roller rink on the east side near sure shot.. was it motor city roller rink?
+Beverly Rosenthal Yes, it was Motor City Roller Rink. I was at that show standing at the rear to check out the awesome drummer. I saw Iggy there, too. I played at Bookie's in '79 with Capital Punishment. Those were the days.
I played there in 1987 with my band "Aleister" and opening for us was the Detroit hard core band "Forced Anger" Bookies was still open even then. but I had been there years ago at some Sure Shot punk agency shows..was a cool dump.

Bookies was Detroit's CBGB's. One of the few places where total musical freedom existed.
