  • An animated past vs present look at the lost railway line from Cambridge to Mildenhall! #Cambridge #cambridgeshire #suffolk #mildenhall #railway
It was built by the Great Eastern Railway, and opened in two stages, in 1884 and 1885.
Traversing thinly populated agricultural terrain, it was not heavily used. The GER introduced cost-saving measures on passenger trains, including push and pull trains and a conductor-guard system, and in 1922 opened three very basic lineside halts.
The passenger service on the line was discontinued in 1962 and, except for a short stub at Barnwell Junction, the line was closed completely in 1965.

Totally brilliant! Thank you. If I had a Time Machine I would love to go back to, say 1904 when the railway network was at its peak. To just rip up old railways seems to me to be an act of vandalism and dis respect to the memories of all this who laboured to build an infrastructure that we so desperately need today. It makes me sad.

The tracks may have gone but the Ghost Train just keeps going on, reaching its destination.. nothing can stop it, not even Time. Fantastic!

Brilliant, I was born in in Cambridge early 60's and we lived in Devonshire Road between the station and Mill Road bridge. I remember as a youngster looking out from my bedroom across to the marshalling yard and watching Black 5's at work. I also remember very well seeing the coaling stage near the station and also that large white building. There was also the cattle market pictured to the right at the start of the video (by the road bridge) and we were able to go train spotting from there. Happy days.
