I really like how Grimora was... Wrong. Her extreme reaction in an attempt to destroy the *old files* failed entirely. What she did... was for nothing.
She tried to save carder, and ends up directly killing him, and in the process, killing everyone else as well.
And I like that. I like how her theme of death being inevitable and being openly embracing of it backfired. Not because of a secret ploy, or some unexpected plot device, she was just... wrong. And everyone paid the price for it.
I think that's honestly what keeps the ending from being bad for me. I strongly dislike it overall still as the game's *only* ending, but between the excellent writing and the masterful subversion of tropes, You just... can't be upset at it.

P03 succeeded in uploading the game. It makes sense, when you think about it. All Leshy did was remove his monitor, and, with the Scrybes other than P03 knowing nothing about technology, they just assumed that the monitor being removed meant P03 stopped working.
However, I'm fairly certain that the Inscryption we play isn't the Inscryption that P03 uploaded. He states that, by uploading the game in the state it is at the time, he has ensured there will be countless copies of the game where he is in control. The fact that the version we play starts with Leshy in control implies we aren't playing P03's version.

I do believe that every scrybe can summon the moon in one way or another. We mainly saw that Leshy could capture and play the moon, but Magnificus could also paint the moon into existence. In a sense every scrybe has this ability. I don’t know exactly how or why each one would summon the moon, but I think the significance of it hold weight along with the tarot cards the trader was speaking about. Upright, the moon represents fears, illusions, and anxiety. Often meant to signify that you’re actively avoiding or hiding away from the truth.
It makes sense that Leshy would summon the moon during his boss fight cause he was scared of losing. He loved playing his card game, and he knows the other scrybes already have a way to revert back to the original game. If he lost then he had a chance to loose it all.
Magnificus is a bit more tricky to pin down with the moon, but I believe he was trying to summon the moon to see if it could save the rest of the data. He foresaw everything, and his own demise along with it. Magnificus was afraid of the thought of being forgotten, so he actively ran from it. Hence why he didn’t have time to shake your hand at the end. I think it would be cool to see the other two summon the moon since it seemed like a vocal point during act two, but either way very good

If he wasn’t afraid of loosing then why would he care about the value of the moon? “Now this is true value.” Would imply that he is intending to make sure you don’t pass. Late game Leshy doesn’t care about actually winning. “We don’t need to keep score.” Is another time that he shows no cares for the actual rules of the game. He cared when he dropped the moon. Besides I think there’s more to the moon then people are actually thinking about.

    • @gustavogodoy9626
      @gustavogodoy9626 2 года назад +6

@@dreemysweety I honestly think Leshy saw the moon only as a prop until he was cornered, not only in the fight but also in the experience, instead of repeating himself with just more cards he summoned a massive card that would stop strong hitters like Ouroboros and Mothman, bringing it forth not only as a final boss but also the most tense part of the game, making it both the most epic part of his campaign both in atmosphere and gameplay.

Screw it, I like feeding trolls.
You're just plain wrong. And based on your like count, everyone knows it. The mycologist was perfectly happy and not enslaved. How about the kraken? Seemed perfectly fine. The bone lord seemed fine too. Sure, he SEEMED sinister but he never really wrongs us or anyone else. The bridge builder? And sure you can SAY Leshy's minions were enslaved, but they never seem to complain, besides maybe the wood carver. They seemed pretty happy. Mag's students were undergoing torture but there was hope for them. Leshy was a very noble soul. He did not deserve death.
Grimora didn't even bother to ask. She did the WRONG thing, for questionable reasons at best. Her arrogance and stupidity killed Luke, and since P03 clearly survived, chances are the old data is still mobile.

    • @ArteMarie56
      @ArteMarie56 2 года назад +12

@@richardashendale922 I have to agree. It didn’t seem to me like anyone was being tortured, besides maybe grimora who simply wanted to die after a long, seemingly endless life. Magnificus actively desired to keep things together, he was in utter despair when the game was being deleted. Only one of the scrybes wanted to go, that being grimora, and everyone else wanted to keep on going. Even if for selfish goals, the consciousness that the old_data had given to the characters did not want to be deleted.

No. While some of them are comfortable at times, the game makes it clear this is not a way to live and that all of them are caught in a constant loop or pain and subjection. At the start of the game, even the Scrybes are suffering. Even if a few of them get by unscathed, like the wood carver, thats not an excuse for everything else.
Kaycee didn't bury them in the forest, she buried them in a hellhole.
Let me ask you. If you knew Hell was real, and millions of people were suffering for all eternity, and had a button that could make it disappear. Would you push it?
I would. I would be morally compelled to.
Also we have no idea why GameFuna killed Luke when they did. For all we know the GT triggered the hit, not the deletion.
Also yes, P03 survived, but that wasn't her doing. That was the GTs doing. If she had achieved her plan, and deleted him earlier he wouldn't have escaped, and the OLD_DATA would have been lost.
I think Kaycee had the best of intentions. I really do. But there no denying that her mercy caused so much suffering and let the OLD_DATA escape.

    Leshy: Story
    P03: Gameplay
    Magnificus: Presentation/Artistic Design.
But what does that make Grimora? If Leshy crafts the story, P03 the mechanics, and Magnificus the art, what else is there for her to be?
She did comment on having lost favor with her colleagues in act two. Perhaps this fourth wheel status contributed to that.

    • @angeldoyle859
      @angeldoyle859 2 года назад +117

Personally, my lineup goes like this:
      Leshy: Worldbuilding/ atmosphere
      PO3: Mechanics
      Grimora: Story
      Magnificus: Aesthetics/Production
      Reasoning is as follows:
Leshy's story is never exactly the strongpoint of his campaign, it's the atmosphere. when you think of the scrybe of beasts and what that means, beasts are the creatures populating a world that give it life. This is evidenced by Leshy's minions also being the game's most fleshed out NPCs, with most getting their own boss fight.
When talking about Grimora, each life is a story with it's own beginning and end that she controls from start to finish. Of all the scrybes she most wants to move the actual plot forward rather than allow Inscryption to be an unending power struggle. The process of reaching her is also built upon assembling the stories of her three minions.
PO3 is probably the clearest of the four, especially evidenced by how he talks. He is the main scrybe to openly care about the stats and quality of cards as well as gameplay mechanics.
Magnificus is a bit of a tough one, but his theme of magic definitely feels like it's representing bringing all the parts together and executing them. The main evidence that I'm using for this is the fact that his 3D arena, even after much of it has been deleted, is by far the furthest ahead in graphics and presentation. By comparison, all the other scrybes' playmats kind of feel like playtesting prototypes. His students are a metaphor for ideas seeking to be brought to life but put on the eternal production backburner, and he puts everything through a brutal gauntlet of tests and trials before it reaches his canvas. In combat, magnificus alters cards to suit his own artistic vision and barely allows you to play with any strategy other than what works with what he wants and believes is suitable for final production.
Anyway, thanks for listening to my Ted talk

@@angeldoyle859 I love how you think, and I was almost convinced to agree, but sadly I realized, aside from writing about how and when everything dies, Grimora doesn't really seem to show much interest in story writing. If she actually expressed an interest in eulogies it would be different. But that doesn't seem to be her thing.

Not sure how I'm supposed to dump a giant paragraph anywhere besides notepad which is lame so don't mind me.
This is my take on how Grimora's act should have gone, beware giant block of text below:
Bone decks are horrible in Inscryption act II (except for grinding.) Bone decks are slow- the slowest in the game by far, a gravedigger is virtually required to win which can't be placed until turn 2 without a hammer. Even gravediggers are slow, making their cost up after its first turn and enabling a 1-1 unit in two turns after that. That's kinda... not fun to play.
Act II of Inscryption made bone decks a little bit viable with the Bone Lord's secret (spoilers ahead). +3 starting bones and an extremely efficient bone producer card is a raw carry in an actual bone deck. However, said efficient card requires energy, as well as an active ability, which doesn't make sense for Grimora's act. As such, this is my ultimate solution:
Boons, from Leshy's act. In Leshy's act, many boons were useless, but in the context of a Grimora type bone deck, the more useless ones would be incredible. A boon could be chosen at the start of the act and replaced with another boon at the end of each segment.
*WALL OF TREES (all player tiles start with 0/6 flyblock trees)*: Acts as early game defense (biggest weakness of a bone deck), as well as 4 potential free bones.
*BONE LORD (+8 bones)* : 8 free bones is pretty obviously good in a bone deck
*AMBIDEXTROUS (+1 card draw)*: Previously one of the most useful boons, still good utility wise in a bone deck, but lacks early game support
*MAGPIE'S EYE (draw whatever card you want)*: Also previously one of the most useful boons, a little different than ambidextrous but is still mostly the same in strength and weakness.
*GOAT'S BLOOD (1 black goat starts on field)*: Technically useless in a bone deck. However, discerning players may remember that the Black Goat is a worthy sacrifice to the bone lord...
[To those who think it's uncharacteristic for Grimora to use boons, I say: It's uncharacteristic Leshy uses bones. Besides, most of these are still a little thematically appropriate.]
Like how Leshy uses two different types of currency, and how P03 has 5 lanes instead of 4, Grimora will tamper with a fundamental mechanic. Health. Health lost by the scales will be permanent, and the player will have only one life (in contrast to PO3's infinite lives and Leshy's 2-3 lives.) If the players health ever drops too a new low, the player will start their next battle with that amount of health. Health can regained up to base health on the scale through my next concept:
Permanent sacrifices. The player should be forced to sacrifice cards to the Bone Lord every time before taking a new card. This concept makes the ambidextrous boon scarier, due to running out of cards quicker in combination with having less total cards. One card would give only one life, or 2 depending on rarity. However, health could be sacrificed to choose all 3 cards instead of 1 when getting a new card at any time- which could be abused because you could sacrifice both extra cards for a total of 2 health instead of 1 (though you have to enter a battle with those useless cards and less health.)
Boons can also be sacrificed- though they can become replenished for free at the end of each segment. At any point while sacrificing to the Bone Lord, the player can sacrifice their boon for a rare card- the only way to get rare cards in this act (because lets face it bone mound op). The only exceptions to obtaining a rare card would be the BONE LORD boon, which is unsacrificable, and GOAT'S BLOOD, which would always give a similar card to Bone Lord's Horn (though only once per run.) The Boon can also be sacrificed instead of a card, allowing the player to come out with 2 cards instead of -1 from the Bone Lord.
Deaths will be incredibly punishing. Instead of giving the player an easier time after every death like how Leshy did it, Grimora's act will permanently lower player health after every death until the player starts the game dead, where the player would then actually die, setting the counter back to -4; permanently changing a starting card into a corpse (like that of act 2), making them impossible to sacrifice and making them a 0/1. One really crazy thing that needs to be implemented is for the player to be able to sacrifice themself to the bone lord at any time, adding a corpse card and forever setting the counter to -4 forever. The payoff would be an easy win for the next Grimora challenger (next run) by providing them with a special boon, which is probably super overpowered.
The act will play out in 4 different segments, one for each of Grimora's skeletons and one for Grimora. Any of these acts can be chosen at any time, except for Grimora's act, which must be unlocked. Each area will also apply a mechanical rule that drains the player. Kaycee Hobbes's area will reduce the damage of every card on the board at the end of each game for the run. Sawyer Petal's area will have units that deal +1 damage when not hitting a unit. Royal Dominguez's area will make it so that whenever one of your units take damage, they will obtain the fragile sigil until the end of the run. Grimora's area will burst you down instead of weakening you, doing nothing other than providing difficult fights.
But what about upgrading cards, and other outside-combat events? Due to how brutal this act is so far, outside events will allow for overpowered card crafting, similar to the first and third acts. Adding sigils to cards will only be done through money, being buyable similar to PO3's act. After buying an item that costs maybe 5 moneys on the checkerboard, the player can turn a card into a corpse, while making them cost 0 and giving their sigils to something else. Units like the Headless Horseman will benefit greatly from becoming a corpse, but tend to have garbage sigils to give. This will be the only overpowered card gaining system, because it does two overpowered things while usually doing nothing negative.
But to those who spent 8 hours reading this mess may ask, "why? why did you make so many permanent and horrible consequences to complicated things you might forget about in gameplay?" Grimora has always been about death and accepting horrible things. By making this the most unforgiving act, a first-time player is more than likely to make at least one devastatingly huge missplay. Many players may even die enough to make all their starting cards into corpses. By doing this, they are literally forced to... kill themselves, maybe multiple times, within the game, to obtain enough power to win. This act is also designed to be the most frustrating and difficult (though at high reward to those who can beat it), because it's the darkest part of the game. While still beatable by all players, it requires a difficult decision to do so if you fall low enough- the emotional decision of killing off yourself (though some personalities have no problem with that if it's a free win)

very cool concepts, i feel like it could be neat for the stories of each card to matter in some way. like, provide all the elements necessary to make them follow the hero's journey, be weakened, then become stronger to overcome the obstacle, or inevitably die.
maybe cards should keep their health between games, but be able to be healed? maybe interactions between cards that affect the game?
