WOW!!! THIS is an example of why EVERYONE needs to discover the thrill of opera. The acting, and pacing of the music... bravo Gergiev, and all!

¡Qué bárbaro! No puedo creerlo. Como puede ser que tiene voz fuerte, con tono campana, con calor tierna TODAVIA a los 58 años en este actuacion. Y el es en todos los escenas. Fantastico. Increible. Mil gracias por compartir.

Splendid! The entire performance is available on RUclips and the opera is a masterpiece! Domingo is superb here, despite singing some passages half a tone lower. Good Russian accent and his passionate stage involvement is admirable. This love duet is overwhelming in its desperate sexual passion, the dramatic music which ends it is simply too magnificent for words.

His accent is not Russian. But he is trying it okay. He is not pronouncing some consonants and strictly Russian vowels fast enough, like many non-Russian speakers do.;)

Fully agree. I saw him in Madrid with Obratsova as countess... the greatest performance I'vr seen in my whole life. Obratsova was amazing singer.

"singing some passages half a tone lower" -- you mean literally? Which ones? It is very interesting.. And why? I read, that Tchaikovskij edited almost all arias after notes from the conductors.. So it were not as much good singers for something he wrote at the time.

I heard this with Mattila, Guleghina, and Gorchakova and of the three (ALL of them were INCREDIBLE, don't get me wrong), it was Gorchakova who pinned you to your seat through the visceral, HEALTHY power behind her high notes.
I have never experienced anything like it.

@@MarinaD-k8n well, opera is not about pronunciation. Especially not performed by such great masters

The stage direction is also incredibly sensitive. At the very end of the scene, when German's and Lisa's eyes lock into each other's gaze... so powerful and real.

I used to wonder why no major Russian composer wrote an opera about Anna Karenina. Then l read the Tolstoy novel (in English translation) while travelling the Trans-Siberian Railway from Moscow to Vladivostok (this was back in 2013) and understood: she is a despicable character; immature, selfish, hysterical. No redeeming qualities whatsoever.

Herman Placido Dominga to Wagner to Otello to Chenier. Dramaturgia i sposób artykulacji tekstu muzycznego znakomita! Gorczakowa w znakomitej formie. A Gergiev śpiewniejszy od Karajana - nie dołuje!
