  • This is just a quick video featuring my thoughts regarding the Kizer Brat. Imo this is a knife with excellent ergonomics. Very comfortable in the hand. I also love the action on this. It's very easy to deploy the knife and easily close via its button lock. But imo it's not a great EDC knife. It's a bit too large, thick and rectangular in shape to comfortably fit in a pocket. Or rather there are many many other knives which are smaller, lighter, thinner or all of the above that make a better carry than this knife. So while this knife is lightweight (relatively) with excellent ergonomics and action and it's an integral// it begs the question who does this knife cater to? It's not an EDC knife, there are other knives which are more compact than this knife and are more "carriable" and this knife is not a hard-use knife because of its button lock. So if it's not an EDC knife and it's not a hard-use knife, what is it?

So I’m going to shed some light on the hard use term as it relates to this plunge lock (button lock) design. This knife really has a plunge lock and not a conventional button lock. You look at a knife like the Kizer Gemini and it has a standard button lock, where a tapered tip comes out and engages a hole in the blade. The Gemini will fail with almost no effort when hit in the spine. The Brat takes a lot more to fail, and trust me I have tested it to failure. With that said I have been able to use my Gemini, because I use the knife in the correct direction, not spine first, but rather blade first. In reality almost all of the folding knives on the market are going to fail if they take blows to the spine repeatedly. My Grandpa used a slip-joint Case knife his entire life, which had no locking mechanism at all and he used that knife for stuff that was way out of its league.

I like the understated clean lines and bulky design. You make good points tho. I have large hands and find many knives too thin. Is the integral design all that? I love the simplicity of this knife. I want one. Cheers!

I think as time passed by I've grown to appreciate this knife a bit more. I still think it's not a pocket knife or not pocketable but I appreciate its quality/value as an integral knife. It took me some time to realize and understand that as far as integrals go this is easily one of the most affordable options out there - and it's a great one.

Which one do you prefer without looking at weight or size: Brat or Altus?

Altus. But I"ve grown to appreciate the Brat and how easy it is to deploy the knife. Both have excellent ergonomics imo and cut great though.

I mean for perspective, I carry a 2lbs 10” long gun every single day, so my Kizer brat is certainly the last thing I’m concerned about being “too big to EDC” In fact my edc light is even somewhat significantly larger than my brat.

That makes sense! I think in terms of weight this knife actually is fine. I find that knives up to 4 ounces are ok. And this is 3.6 ounces. But it's the size that's a dealbreaker for me. It's too long and too thick, like a brick (a light brick) but a brick nonetheless. Imo other knives are compact (sizewise) for EDC. One of those things where it doesn't work for me but could work for other people.

The blade was flipping and flopping as you was opening and closing it.

It's a button lock so I was holding on the button. Hard to see because it's in black. But its' still a bit unstable.

I agree with that. There's a few I'm ok with. Sebenza, Ontario Rat, Cold Steel.
