  • For the last 20 years, Jedi Outcast has entertained players with one of the best Star Wars experiences ever created, which included some of the best lightsaber combat ever seen in a video game. It has also stood the test of time as one of the best examples of what makes the Star Wars Expanded Universe so amazing. In this video, I take a look back at this incredible game and discuss its impact as both a video game and as a piece of Star Wars history, and explain why, despite a few flaws, it remains of the best Star Wars video games ever made.

    The Expanded Universe does exactly that: it expands Lucas's world. All Disney has accomplished is to make a trite knock-off with poor writing and bad character tropes. You have earned a sub. Also, this is my favorite Star Wars game :)

    When I was young and played on console (Gamecube) I had similar frustrations with the shooting but having grown up and played the game on PC and in VR, I can report that being bad at the gun play is purely a platform and skill issue. VR especially makes the gun play feel a million times more compelling.

    I’ve never seen a review analyze the story as well as this video, I’ll have to pass it on to Eric Biessman, who wrote it. He’ll appreciate it. And I’m glad you appreciate the freedom of the lightsaber combat and force powers (which is what I did for the game), those were my guiding principles - intuitive gameplay, freedom and control.

      Huh, a dev who worked on this, that’s awesome.
      Quick question: How was the saber realistic combat cheat implemented? I recall Soldier of Fortune 2 was developed concurrently with this game so was the Ghoul damage system in any way implemented for the dismemberment in Jedi Outcast?

    • @mgummelt
      @mgummelt 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@gameragodzilla yup, exactly. We ported the Ghoul system from SoF 1 over to Jedi Outcast (which was our full skeletal animation system, not just dismemberment) and that’s how all the dismemberment in Jedi worked (basically just scaling bones to zero and spawning off a copy with all the parent bones scaled away, then then on dismemberment caps)

    • @gameragodzilla
      @gameragodzilla 6 месяцев назад

      @@mgummelt Nice. Always liked the Ghoul damage system for how detailed dismemberment could get, though I imagine it was still toned down in a way for a T rated Star Wars game. Taking off individual chunks of people’s heads was probably beyond what was allowed even for cheats. lol
      And pass my praise for the story as well, since Jedi Outcast has one of my favorite Star Wars stories starring my favorite (yes, even more than the movies) Star Wars character.
      EDIT: Also one more question: Mark Hamill actually voiced the main villain of SoF2 iirc, so why wasn’t he brought in to also voice Luke? Bob Bergen was the go to voice for Luke in games at that time and did a great job, but given Billy Dee Williams returned for Lando, I wonder why Mark didn’t for Jedi Outcast. Is that something you know anything about or was that handled by another team?

    First off, this is a great video, thanks for keeping "The Chronicles of Katarn," as I like to call it, alive and relevant. In fact, I think you have found a popular niche right now. Old games are either being re-released, remade, or remastered. Retrospectives are really fun to watch, and can be deciding factor into whether or not people will buy these absolute gems. I hope to see more retrospectives from you in the future.
    Secondly, Gameplay:
    I agree, in my experience PC actually is much worse than console in the gunplay department, which is extremely surprising, I can't hit a damn thing once the enemies detect me. However, I blaze through the non-saber levels on console, almost every shot hits.

    Regarding the shooting sections, yeah it can be difficult to hit targets because the AI was clearly designed around the lightsaber where they move around constantly to flank you or get away from your lightsaber. Works very well there but makes landing hits with the blasters extremely difficult.
    What I found worked best was to pick off as many targets as possible from a distance or around corners with the Bryar Pistol when possible (almost like a tactical shooter), since it’s very accurate and the charge shot can one shot Stormtroopers if you hit them in the head and they don’t move around that much in those instances. Then when you’re in open combat, wait for the enemies to either stop briefly to shoot you or start running in a straight line either towards or away from you, since you don’t need to lead your shots either way and can hit them. They’re not all that spongy when you do land hits so luckily it doesn’t take too long to put them down that way. The lack of accuracy also applies to the enemies so if you stay on the move, you can also minimize damage a lot. Only bad feeling is the low accuracy, but if you do those two things I mention, you can manage.

    The golden age of Star Wars games! I'll never understand it, there were decades of quality Star Wars content in the EU that Disney could have used to craft their sequel trilogy (Thrawn trilogy, Luke's New Jedi Order, etc.). Instead they tossed all of it and re-hashed the OT with far worse characters and a patched together, awful storyline. Sad....we'll never know what could have been.

    Love this game, and great video by the way. I personally disagree with your take on the shooting mechanics. They aren't nearly as bad as you make them out to be. I think mostly people just misunderstand and misuse the weapons. People try and use the E-11 like a modern hitscan when instead it is a spray and prey sort of gun. Because of this I pretty much exclusively use the Bryar blaster pistol because it is extremely accurate and its alternate fire can one shot most enemies with headshots. If you still enjoy this game try using the Bryar pistol exclusively for a playthrough and I think you will find the shooting mechanics much more enjoyable.

    Not gonna lie I really tried to love this game but I found the combat super clunky throughout and found the lightsaber combat fairly inconsistent in my inputs. I’m bummed because I grew up with this and Jedi academy but they just don’t work for me very well anymore. Overall it’s a game that I must just not be good at considering no one else holds my opinion on this but I’m glad it holds up for everyone else. I wish I still loved it like I did when I was younger.
    Secondly I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts on not only the sequels but the Star Wars movies as a whole. I personally really love the Sequels and Rey is in my top 5 favorite Jedi characters. I really related to her arc a lot and found her character to be very interesting. I loved how her focus as a character was more on self acceptance and discovery and not so much the hero’s journey. She started out as a very strong character with a lot of skills due to her upbringing and due to her natural force talent and then by the end of the trilogy is very powerful and fully accepting of herself and of her chosen lineage. By the end of the trilogy she lets go of the need to know or be connected to her parents and finally becomes herself. Personally really loved her journey a lot. The only movie I felt was weak was Rise of Skywalker mostly due to half the movie trying to walk back the last Jedi. That really hurt the movie and ultimately the trilogy in a lot of ways.

    • @sagemodejedi6041
      @sagemodejedi6041  2 года назад +3

      It always sucks when a game you grew up with doesn't quite hold up for you anymore. I've had a couple of those myself, and it can be a real bummer for sure.
      As for the movies, I personally am not a fan of the sequel movies. I love episodes 1 through 6 very, very much, and consider them to be some of my favorite movies ever made, but I've never enjoyed the sequels. Apart from the fact that I was extremely upset when Disney announced they were throwing out the Expanded Universe and telling their own stories instead, I felt the sequel movies were simply retreading the original trilogy. I thought the events of this new trilogy undid everything the original trilogy had accomplished, and simply told a lesser version of those events instead. They also never felt like Star Wars movies to me, which further alienated them from me. I've never quite forgiven Disney for what they've done with the franchise thus far, and still consider those movies to not be canon to this day.
      Having said all that, I think its great that the movies (or at least Rey) managed to resonate with you. If you look at these movies as a standalone trilogy, I'm sure there are a lot of positives that I'm just not seeing. I might find that Rey's arc, for example, may actually be as well written as you see it if I try and look at this trilogy by itself. However, it's impossible for me not to compare these to Lucas's six movies, and when I do that I just can't accept them as good movies.
      I have a whole bunch to say about the other six movies that I'd definitely like to cover in a video or series of videos some day. Star Wars means a lot to me, and there will be definitely be more videos down the line talking about the movies, games, and the rest of the Expanded Universe.

      @cadybird5809 2 года назад +1

      @@sagemodejedi6041 thanks for the response. I definitely get the disappointment a lot of fans feel. To be honest I'm very soft towards the sequel trilogy. I grew up with the OG and prequel trilogies and played some of the older games but for one reason or another I never dived into Star Wars as much as I wanted to in the past. Then my friend persuaded me to see The Last Jedi with her, and we watched The Force Awakens, and The Last Jedi back to back one at home, and the other at the theatre and that was when I fully dived into it all.
      I dived into the older movies and found a much deeper love than I had before. I played almost all of the older games I could get my hands on. I read and watched things from legends, and from current lore. I watched all of the TV shows. The sequel era is what got me going as a hard core fan so I will always be soft toward this trilogy but even I have very complex feelings about it. I love certain things about it, but most of the things I loved I learned overtime mostly came from the Last Jedi which I think is the best out of the three as it takes some big swings, and takes some bold directions. I loved the idea of history repeating itself and how the OG trilogy never acknowledged the flaws of the Jedi order, and they primed Luke to just rebuild it, and thus it repeated history of the fall, this time even faster as the Empire still had a lot of resources from the first war they won.
      I like these ideas a lot but I can totally get why some wouldn't love it. For example my favorite version of Luke is old Luke. I found him to be a much more interesting character after his fall. The OG Luke is good it's just I always found him to be a pretty milk toast and basic character type. So I loved seeing him become more of an actual human in The Last Jedi and not the hero archetype he was in the past. With that said if you adored Luke and saw him as a favorite character, and hero I can see why his interpretation and also the direction of history repeating itself as disrespectful, lazy, or a cop out to repeat a lot of tropes again to many fans.
      For me my main issue with the sequels mostly stim from The Force Awakens, and Rise of Skywalker. They both really just try to be the OG star wars again like you said. The Force Awakens I was ok with mostly cause it introduced new characters well and more or less introduced the idea of history repeating itself and needing a new approach to solve it that would later get expanded in the Last Jedi, but Rise of Skywalker spent most of the movie just walking back The Last Jedi and tried to just be a fanfic version of Star Wars I didn't like. I still was ok with the ending for Rey but found the direction they took to end the trilogy to not be great.
      I adore the other six movies. I probably prefer the Prequels to the OG myself mostly. The only OG movie I completely adore is Return of the Jedi. I love the Phantom Menace a lot, and Revenge of the Sith is just awesome. I look forward to seeing more Star Wars content from you though. I love talking star wars. The fanbase is so vast and varied in opinion that I love engaging with it all. Especially love engaging with it now that it seems a lot less toxic on both sides of the aisle.

    • @sagemodejedi6041
      @sagemodejedi6041  2 года назад +1

      The sequels are definitely a complicated subject for a lot of people. Star Wars is such an amazing franchise that attracts so many different people, which inevitably leads to a lot of different opinions about which movies are great and what direction the franchise should go in. As long as we all discuss things civilly, there's plenty of room for everyone.
      The prequels are definitely my preferred trilogy as well. I love the original trilogy, but Lucas really refined the Star Wars experience in the prequels in my opinion. Phantom and Attack are criminally underrated movies, and Revenge of the Sith is not only my favorite Star Wars movie, it's also my favorite movie of all time.
      I'm excited to talk more about it all in future videos. Like you, I love talking all things Star Wars, and this channel is a great way for me to get my thoughts and opinions out there and engage with other passionate Star Wars fans like you. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this!

    I also really like this game, but i think that the level designs can be too unfair, like in Yavin Swamp, where there is a passage under a rock wall that is almost completely hidden, unless you stand at the right spot with the right angle, I remember being stuck there for an hour, because it looked like a dead end. Or in Yavin Final where there is a wall you have to go through to get to the final boss and the only visual indicator is that the wall texture is floating a little and it is the only time the game does this, lets be honest here, that is a BS move from the designers.

Literally the worst combination of things you could do for ranged combat in these games. Use the single shot mode, headshots, and shoot when you stop between moving. You'll clear out the stormtroopers like nothing.
