    Me: I want to use my iPad as an effects unit. Let's see if Jakob showed us how on RUclips ...
    He did.
    Legendary.

    Wow my head is spinning after this video. I’m surprised you didn’t include a guitar effects pedal because they are so hot right now. It seems like a perfect application for this approach. I’m shopping for another interface now lol.

    Brilliant! I love the fact that, not only are you a smart enough sausage to explain this process, but also you chose a really practical example. iOS FX can be beautiful but they can also be heavy on resources. But as they are so cheap, you could put them on a cheaper old iPad and save resources on you main cheap old iPad. This could work for me if I had a capable interface. I have my desktop back up and running and I’m feeling a need for connectivity. None of my devices are recent but if they all went into one audio interface and could be used sort of, to send real audio to each other…..

    Jacob Haq, this is genius! Thank you for the tutorial! The amount of quality, resonably priced apps on the iPad plus the power of Apple's chips, make this platform hard to ignore. I'm having a great time with the SWAM Trumpet app for iPad at the moment, which is just awesome, along with the Korg Nanokey Studio as the keyboard/controller.

    What a clever solution! I've just recently began with iPad audio creation, like AUM, Drambo, NanoStudio, numerous synths, etc. and this opens up a lot of possibilities. Thanks for sharing!

    THANK YOU x 6000 for the folks who saw this and ran off to try it out so fast they forgot to say thank you…. . You got some tremendously helpful videos but this one is real nice because I am still new to AUM and you explained exactly what I was looking for. Thank you very much! I’m thinking to use the SP404mk2 and probably the iconnectivity audio4+ which is sorta overkill.. could probably use a smaller more portable one like what you show.

      Think of your second iPad and audio interface combo as one single effect pedal and it gets a lot simpler to conceptualize. On your main iPad, set the channel you want to add effects on to output to your second outputs on the main audio interface. Connect those outputs to the inputs of your “effect pedal” then connect the outputs of your “effect pedal” to the input of your main audio interface. Now we can think of this input as an external synth we want to bring into our mix. Within the software in the main iPad now, take the input channels you just connected from your effects pedal, and make sure they are routed to your main mix. Then make sure your main mix out is set to the FIRST output of your audio interface - not the one we used for the effect pedal. Now hook those first outputs to your speakers. That way you aren’t sending your whole mix to your effect pedal, then back to your main, then back to your effect pedal and creating a feedback loop. Now to configure the “effect pedal” iPad, just route the inputs in your “effect pedal” audio interface through whatever effects you want in your effect pedal iPad, and then route the output of that channel to the output of your “effect pedal” interface. You should be in business then :)

    That UA-202 interface looks a lot like the Behringer UCA202, which I love and learned about from this channel! It also has a headphone jack.

    One thing I do is split my stereo signal and use one side for effects send and the other for dry.

  • @originalsynth
    @originalsynth 3 года назад +2

    Nice one, as usual clear and friendly :) I do have some extra information which might be helpful to i-users:
    - you *can* use a single in/out pair if you use mono signals - use left OR right out to the external fx unit, returning the signal to stereo (or mono) in and the other mono out to your speaker/mixer. AUM is good for selecting single L/R inputs & outputs in the I/O options for each track. A bit limited but still possible whilst you're waiting for a better audio interface, especially with AUM able to record stereo internally. If you do only use mono return, there is a spare mono in (if it's a stereo input) so you could use two external effects simultaneously in parallel if you used a splitter on the mono fx send/out!
    - there is a Behringer UCA-222 or UCA-202 which I think is a copy of your small audio interface. It has a minijack headphone out with volume (as well as S/PDIF optical digital out) and is currently under £20 GBP. One ancient techie review (nwavguy) took it apart and analysed the components and was pleasantly surprised at the quality.
    Hope this is useful, peace :)

      I think I am saying what you pretty much said but regardless, I would be ok going IN with a mono sound source, sure, many are even better that way, but the out coming off the FX , ESPECIALLY some of the awesome spacial reverbs and delays should probably be stereo. But I am only an expert at being an idiot! 🤦🏼

    Thanks Jakob. This is one of the most important audio interface videos I've seen in a long time. The easiest and cheapest way to try something like this is a cheap USB audio interface (around 10 EUR), but this is only MONO. I can recommend the Behringer UMC 404HD at this point if you need more Audio IN Lines and Stereo IN. But that's always a matter of taste.

    Will this routing work for an External Reverb Guitar Pedal as well?
    Can AUM recognize the pedal as a Hardware Input.
    Should I create an Audio Channel for the routing?
    Generally how do to connect External Pedal Guitar effects into your DAW on Ipad?
    Cheers Jakob

    • @JakobHaq
      @JakobHaq  2 года назад +1

      Yes it works for any external effect unit, however the cables needed might differ depending on the input and output connectors of the sound interface used and the pedal/effect unit.
      No, AUM cannot recognise the effect since it’s not connected through USB like one would connect a sound interface. For that to be a thing, the effect pedal would have to have a built in sound interface with USB connection.
      Yes you would have to set up a send fx channel and a return channel inside AUM. A Send on the instrument channel for sending audio out through the sound interface into the pedal/effect unit. And then a channel for receiving the audio back from the output of the pedal/effect unit that goes back into the sound interface.
      The most straight forward way of connecting a guitar pedal to an iPad is to use a sound interface with 6.3 tele jacks. Guitar goes into pedal, pedal into sound interface, setup a channel inside AUM where you select the sound interface in the input slot.
      There are also sound interfaces that you can connect your guitar to directly. And then you can use guitar pedal apps to get a multitude of various software driven dist, chorus, reverb, delay, you and it-pedals.
