Is Heartland/the dump worth a trip from the mainland? Can't find too many videos on the riding there and from what I'm seeing it's more XC-ish?

It is definitely more rolling terrain and pedally, but I would say it is worth it. Having said that, I'm biased since that is where I learned to ride and get to connect with old friends when I go there. If you are planning a 1 day trip to the island to ride you should probably check out Mt. Tzouhalem. It's super fun. Go check out ThsIsGoingDownhill on youtube - he has lots of videos that focus on south island riding (the Dump, Sooke, and Tzouhalem).

Me either! I remember way back there used to be a teeter totter, but that still doesn’t explain the name.

The ladders have been gone for 20+ years.
