That “What have you done!?!” Hits different when Gordon eventually realizes the horror he will unleash on earth by killing the Nihilanth. If only the 2 home-worlds worked together they could have become a fierce force to be reckoned with. But instead they destroyed each other allowing the combine to take rule. Heck you could add race x in that alliance.
thats said when the gonarch is killed. the humans found Xen crystals and used them to go to Xen to explore a new world. the aliens on Xen were running from the combine and found themselves trapped on xen. Gman showed up with an unstable Xen crystal to open the portal for unknown reasons. with the aliens needing an escape, they took the portal storms to earth and the nihilanth held the portals open and gordon was tasked to go in to stop whatever was keeping the portal from closing to end the Xen invasion. the combine detected these storms and travel between dimensions and made their way to earth. that is when the combine invasion took place. the combine are taking over everything they can and draining planets of their resources just like they did with the nihilanths home world.
I don't think the Race X would be interested in a tripartite alliance. If my memory serves me right, Randy Pitchford and his crew at Gearbox Software said they made the Race X as a non-canon breaking faction that solely wanted to (sic) terraform the world
Black Mesa’s Nihilanth voice really misses something from the original. I think it’s the monotone voice and the ‘static’ that makes it sounds like a hiveminded bee swarm.
@@line-kq2ph He's probably trying to mimic human communication through laughter. He probably knows enough about human communication to know that laughter can be sadistic and unnerving.
I find it fascinating that this version really feels like an intelligent being trying to communicate in a language that it barely speaks. Unlike the original version where it was implied that his dialogues were clear because he communicated telepathically
I must say Nihilanth sounds disturbing but not DISTURBED like in the original, where it sounded like both. The pain that came through the original voice was part of what made it so disturbing, even though this voice is much more unusual and rough in terms of timbre. This is excellent vocal work but I feel like the part of the lore in which the Nihilanth is in pain has been somewhat neglected here.
Nihilanth does communicate telepathically. And that's the point. It's an alien being trying to communicate to freeman in a language he understands. The slow, unnatural, eery sounds that are supposed to be sentences shows it's a being from another universe conveying information in a form freeman can understand. This and a few other points are things crowbar collective didn't quite understand. This rendition is audibly just a guy doing a scratchy deep generic monster voice with a ton of special fx thrown into it, making him seem less like an intelligent monstrosity almost if not beyond human understanding and more like a big bad monster waiting for you at the end of the game, trying to sound simply intimidating and big, which is even downplayed by how you can hear it's literally just a normal guy on a microphone.
@@vladislav109 You say "things crowbar collective didn't quite understand" as if Nihilanth (and all of Xen) weren't versions deliberately created to be different from the original game.
@@yourfaithlessfriend9399 they were still doing their best to respect the source material and the nihilanth and all of its details is directly woven into the half life lore. So yes, they missed out on details. Maybe not key details, but big enough to say they didn't get everything. BM's Xen in its entirety is amazing on its own.
I don't believe the Nihilanth wants to fight the Combine. It hates the Combine, and clearly the Combine did a large amount of experimentation on the Nihilanth and likely enslaved it at some point before it escaped, however that's the thing: it KNOWS the Combine. It KNOWS that they're unstoppable. The Nihilanth's goal in Half-Life isn't to defeat the Combine, it's to flee the Combine. If the Nihilanth's Xenian Militia manages to take over Earth's dimension and travel there, it puts itself one step ahead of the Combine, but it doesn't protect it. If you were fleeing a serial killer and they had you cornered in a hall way with just a closet, you would go into the closet. They would know you were in there, and they would simply open the closet to kill you, but you would still enter the closet regardless. That's what the Nihilanth's doing, but the serial killer is the Combine, the hallway is Xen, and the closet is Earth's Dimension. The Nihilanth would refuse to fight because truthfully, it's a coward. It knows fighting the Combine is certain death, so it's not interested in trying. If the Nihilanth was interested in cooperation for the purpose of fighting the Combine, it would simply have communicated it's intentions to the human race and offered an alliance. However, the Nihilanth tells Gordon that he will never win, he will die, and they are coming. The Nihilanth is warning Gordon, but it isn't interested in allying with him because it knows there's no point. But Gordon has one trick up his sleeve: The G-Man is on his side. As long as G-Man is seemingly watching over and protecting Gordon, regardless of his likely evil intentions, Gordon will succeed.

Actually the portal storms from the Black Mesa incident resulted in the Combine finding Earth. Gordon killing the Nihilanth didn't effect the end result of the Combine invasion.
The battle is way better in Black Mesa. In the original it was either you was just shooting none stop behind a rock if you didn't chose to stand behind a rock you was getting teleported every 15 seconds. In Black Mesa you have to heal and charge and it just matches what you was going for all along.
No I agree, while the fight is so much better in Black Mesa, the voice in the original isnt intimidatingly deep like this one. Its just... freaky. Original genuinely made me unconfortable.

Honestly, what I love about when the nihilanth says “freeeman” is how this signifies how the nihilanth, this eldritch being that is the cause of the whole alien invasion, and most of the disaster at black mesa, is on first name terms with you. This immensely powerful being whose consciousness is probably incomprehensible you sees you, Gordon Freeman, as an equal.
