There is a reason why Formula 1 is called "the great circus", not only because of the picturesque atmosphere that its events presented in the 50's and 60's, but also because it is directed by authentic clowns.
For God's sake, how are you going to reject ANDRETTI AND a giant like GENERAL MOTORS when in the past you accepted:
-A shoemaker who bought a team and ended up melting it almost at the end of the season.
-A pirate Lotus of Malay origin that he even had to sell the carpet at his entrance.
-A Spanish team that could not run the Australian GP 2 years in a row because they were too slow.
-A team that did not even put its cars in the wind tunnel, which also had the name of a Russian car manufacturer of dubious origin, and which also missed some tests in 2014 because of a Trojan.
-A team that adapted a Honda engine to a 4-year-old Arrows and gave it to Takuma Sato to drag around.
-A team that had to compete a year earlier than expected due to pressure from its sponsor and also sank the name of a legendary construction company in the motor world.

Can we admit something? The problems really started with the 2014 PU regulations, which were conceived off in the immediate aftermath of the GFC where the sports future seemed to be in immediate question. For reasons entirely having to do with marketing and branding, particularly to investors in the automotive industry, these incredible complex hybrid power units were developed and marketed as "green" and in line with the future of the automobile. They killed competition, made the cars way too heavy, and made the sport to expensive for all but the big 3.
F1 needs to rethink the entire direction it had taken since the hybrid era if it doesn't want to keep backsliding into a glorified parade every single year

The audacity of Formula 1 infuriates me. They don’t care about whats “best for the sport”, they care about lining their pockets with as many dollar bills as possible. More competition is better for the sport, so why are they gatekeeping competitors? “Why the prize pool of course! We can’t hand out more prize money now can we, because that would make us 500 million dollars worse off of the billions we already make every year.” I’m so glad series like WEC and IMSA had a recent boost in popularity, perhaps they can show Liberty Media how to run an actual sporting event rather than the TV drama series they so desperately want it to be. They need to get off their high horse and realise that F1 isn’t actually the be all and end all of motorsport.

As an F1 fan all my life, couldn't agree more with most of this video. Since Liberty took over the competitive integrity of the series has been going down the drain at the expense of manufactured entertainment, seen by most European fans as an 'Americanification' of the sport in line with NASCAR. The Andretti bid really is the perfect example, with the FIA, with all their flaws, accepting the bid on sporting grounds, but Liberty rejecting it on commercial grounds.
I will say though that pay drivers have always been a problem and there are less pay drivers on the F1 grid right now than ever before. For the most part, the SuperLicense points are holding up well (although they are heavily over-weighted towards F2 and F3 to get people going through FIA series'). Mazepin and Latifi only got enough points by each having one fluke season in F2 where they outperformed the rest of their entire careers by far, and Stroll was genuinely dominant in his junior career and has shown sparks of promise in F1 (not to mention the rules have changed since he entered to prevent another Stroll situation). Honestly, I have to agree with the decision not to accept Herta. The guy's a good driver in IndyCar, but far from the cream of the crop, and I just don't see him ever being more than a low-tier driver in F1 without at least putting up a strong title fight in Indy (for reference, in Alex Palou's last full season in FIA F3, he finished 7th behind Mick Schumacher, a bunch of other drivers who failed to reach F1, and just ahead of Zhou Guanyu). And realistically, if Herta was allowed in just because of hype and 'eye-test' appraisal, that would open the floodgates back up to pay drivers way worse than Mazepin and Latifi, which the SuperLicense system mostly got rid of a long time ago.

As a f1 fan, I understand this video and I’m torn as well. A few points:
    1. F1 is typically defined by periods of dominance. 2021 is an outlier. It’s typically defined by one team / driver pairing killing the game until the tech regs change (Hamilton, Schumacher, Vettel, etc). The fun has always been in watching how the rest of the grid evolves.
    2. The Andretti rejection was actually trash and they’ll never hear the end of it, rightfully so. The only reason they did it was to maintain the existing team’s value.
    3. COTA is the last somewhat affordable f1 race, and it’s the only one I actually go to. F1’s recent pricing is stupid at the moment, and they’ll be burned in the long run. The Miami and Vegas GP pricing is horsecrap and will fail eventually (Miami in particular - no one likes that race).

In many ways it's like the DRS scenario. How many years have they been saying they are doing everything they can to allow cars to pass? Money will alway$ change everything. Alway$$$.

F1 fan since 2004. Or rather, WAS an F1 fan since 2004. The elitism behind F1 has disillusioned me, since 2021, from a sport that I dreamed of competing in when I was a kid. The fact that if you aren't groomed from young in a driver academy, you need to pay MILLIONS to even have a *shot* at getting a drive. They race in places that have horrific human rights records (this stems back to their founding in the 50's btw, having raced in Francoist Spain). Actively denying teams a spot, including those backed by *former F1 champions* all for the sake of keeping more money to fewer teams ruins any sense of competition. There's much more down the elitism rabbit hole you can go if you want to talk about F1 & its relation to it. The way it restricts competition, fresh talent, new teams and price points for fans, which would _actually_ create a product F1 fans would stick around for, has ruined the sport.

I got pissed of about Andretti big time too, but think about it, the European institution, FIA, gave Andretti the green light. The American ownership, Liberty media, was the one who shut him down.
Also, why do you "have" to have an American driver? The others aren't good enough? Even between the Indycar drivers, I'd get Palou over Herta any day of the week, because he's proven again and again to be superior.
The problems F1 has aren't 'no American drivers' or 'no American teams'
    The problems are:
Andretti should have been able to enter. By all measures of competitive integrity and fairness, he should have been allowed in. He ticked all the boxes.
Too many street races. They keep ditching purpose built tracks for street circuits, that usually don't improve the racing. 3-4 street tracks is all we need.
Some racetracks flat out don't deserve to be on the calendar. Miami is probably the worst offender in this. It is the most forgettable, bland piece of tarmac I've ever seen racing take place at. We'd all be much happier it was ditched from the calendar, or if we went to a proper racetrack like Road America instead.
And to the people who cry about the racing.....please stop. This isn't a spec series like NASCAR or Indycar. At least 70% of the competition in F1 is the arms race about who will build the best car. It pushes innovation instead of stopping it, like NASCAR does. The biproduct is that the cars are less closely matched, and Max Verstappen wins every race by 20 seconds because Adrian Newey is an aero wizard who got things right early on and stubbornly refuses to be outdeveloped by others.

    • @taylortnt1175

  • @DarthMalak1000
    @DarthMalak1000 2 месяца назад +5

F1's a business, just like Nascar or any other motorsport. They're always going to be loyal to the money. The difference is F1 has always been for the rich and the elite. When you get a ridiculously expensive sport, you get pay drivers. Nascar has pay drivers too. Nascar may have originated from the working man, but that doesn't mean that the odd rich kid never paid their way into the sport. F1 has had its rags to riches stories before too, but they're more the exception rather than the rule.
F1 rejecting Andretti was not unforeseen, in fact the writing was on the wall fairly well in advance that Andretti wasn't going to get in. It was nothing personal, they're just upholding the status quo i.e. less people in the club means more money for all of us in the club. Even as early as the 2000s, F1 was looking to downsize itself down to 20-22 cars on the grid. It's a business. So they're going to make business decisions. Is it fair? No. But it's how it is, and likely how it will always be. That probably doesn't make it sting any less for Andretti's sake, but what are you going do about it? Yes, I want Andretti to be the 11th team too. But what are you going to do about it?
Now as much as people might have been up in arms about Colton Herta getting rejected, but I have no reason to believe that Colton Herta would be as good in an F1 car as Nicholas Latifi or Nikita Mazepin would've been. Not sure if you've noticed, but he's kind of fallen off a cliff since his 2021 campaign.
F1 does not care about the US, just US money. But you could also say the same about China, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE, even Russia up until recently. You really think that they're holding races in these places to bring F1 to the good citizens and racing fans of Qatar and the UAE? I mean no disrespect to anyone from those places, but you don't think they aren't just treating these other places as their own private resort? No, they don't care about Saudi Arabia, China, the UAE, or any of these other oil rich gulf countries they're holding races at. They just care about their money. It's a business as I said before.
F1 has never really been about constant wheel to wheel action. It's nice when you get it and you get a competitive grid without one dude flying off 30 seconds into the distance never to be seen again. But this has never really been the norm. It's not really in the nature of single seaters. F1 has been more about engineering marvels and having the best drivers drive around at insane speeds nearly breaking their necks. If that's not your thing, that's fine. There's something out there for everyone. If you want constant wheel to wheel racing, you still have your IMSAs. You still have your WECs. Even your MotoGPs as well.
Watching one guy rocket off into the distance never to be seen again is not fun. It wasn't fun when Lewis was doing it. It wasn't fun when Schumacher was doing it. And it also wasn't any more fun when Jimmie Johnson did it either. Domination is boring, but it's the norm in motorsport in many ways. Part of the fun is waiting for someone to topple the tower. Who will be the one who will bring the fight to Max? Who will slay the dragon? Will anyone slay the dragon? How will they slay the dragon? That's sort of the point of it.
Apologies if this has gone on too long. I had a fair amount I just wanted to put out there and being brief has never been a strong suit of mine.

    @LeramieCrump 2 месяца назад +5

Boiling it all down, motorsport is a business, F1 is unfortunately no different, motorsports at the top tier nowadays is about money, not talent, I'm not even mad at Verstappen's dominance, I feel towards him the same way I felt about Jimmie Johnson when he was dominating NASCAR, "You don't like him? Find a way to beat him." F1 is suffering from a lot of the same problems NASCAR did in the 2010's, their evolving too much, too fast, looking too much outward instead of looking inward, it's about who has the most money and not about talent, like imagine a completely normal kid in America, not rich but in a good place, coming across an F1 race one day when looking for something to watch, seeing the stupid fast speeds of the F1 Cars, deciding that's what he wants to do, he begins going through the full process, all the way through F2, but at best becomes a reserve driver because he doesn't have the money to put into a team, what I just described is the absolute best case scenario for a rookie driver from America trying to get into F1 today, worst case they get stuck in F2 hell, best case they get Liam Lawson'd because it's not about talent, it's about money, and the worst part of all of it? Much like all sports, there are still going to be people who watch, because F1, despite everything, is still the same at it's core, the best drivers in the world racing against each other...even though some of those "Best drivers" wouldn't even be there if it wasn't for the money in someone elses pocket.
(I apologize for the long as hell comment, this has been on my mind for a while, and this video brought it out of me in the worst way, amazing video as always Elly)

As a long time American F1 fan this is not as big of a deal as you think it is. F1 has always gone through periods of dominance and hasn't always made decisions that the fan base likes. I don't agree with the rejection of Andretti, but it was always going to happen. F1 teams have struggled for decades to achieve profitability. However, with the recent success of F1, the implementation of the cost cap, and new prize money distribution even the smallest teams are. F1 rejected Andretti because the teams voted to, because they believe that splitting the money 11 ways instead of 10 will cost them more than the value that Andretti will bring in. This could compromise the profitability and therefore security of the smaller teams. As for Herta all he had to do was finish higher to get an opportunity. Stroll and Latifi aren't that good, but they did prove themselves capable in lower categories. Mazepin was terrible, but he was only brought in because Hass was going bankrupt and the same could be said for Latifi frankly. But surprise surprise when the cost cap was brought in and F1 teams became more profitable Latifi and Mazepin disappeared. If you want to get rid of pay drivers then the smallest teams need to remain financially secure. F1 isn't perfect, but it certainly isn't out to get Americans.

Also Liberty Media is just the commercial rights holder they didn't vote to reject Andretti, FOM did, which is a group made up of the teams. FOM has been in a feud with the FIA over control of the series over the last few years hence the difference in decisions by the two groups.

    Some pointers:
    1. You’re criticizing Haas for being mediocre and using Andretti’s success in other motorsports as a reason why they would be better than Haas on the F1 grid BUT you forget that Haas was and is a decorated team in other motorsports yet that didnt translate into F1. So your argument is invalid.
    2. The Superlicense points system is pretty solid. Btw you somehow dismiss the fact that even the worst of the so called “pay-drivers” made the 40 points needed to get the Superlicense. It also makes a lot of sense that the categories closer linked to F1 would give out more points towards a Superlicense.
    3. Last but not least. F1 was the biggest motorsport by far even long before it ever became popular in the US. Youre talking about the consequences of F1 losing US popularity as if it would be the end for F1. But it really wouldnt. Most og F1 fans dont even like the US tracks apart from Austin. Las Vegas is another shitty street track and dont even get me started on Miami. Even in its hay day Nascar wasnt even close in popularity to F1 and it was only popular in the US so of course a hit in US popularity would be a big deal for Nascar. But youre comparing apples to oranges

Something to remember - outside of North America, Andretti is not a big deal. Sure, Mario won the championship 40-odd years ago, but Michael? He turned up, crashed repeatedly, and left before the end of the season. The Andretti Team? A mid-tier Indy team, who last won a championship over a decade ago. Andretti in other forms of motorsport? No-one cares...
It may not be the popular view in the US, but in the light of my previous paragraph, Liberty's decision makes sense. A lot can happen in 3 years, so there was no guarantee that GM/Cadillac would ever turn up, and if they did turn up, there was no guarantee of competitiveness. Michael has already demonstrated an unwillingness to commit to F1 in his driving career, so Liberty are bound to question his commitment as a team owner. And the Andretti Team has not produced results that would raise eyebrows for years in Indycar, so why would Liberty let another team in? Just for numbers? For that matter, why would the other TEAMS let a new team in..?
As I see it, from the point-of-view of F1, Liberty's decision makes sense. And this isn't coming from an F1 fan - I gave up on the sport years ago, in favor of endurance, V8Supercars, and NASCAR (which is also turning into a joke). The nearest I've come to watching an F1 race in the last few years was the highlights of the 2021 final, with the Masi stitchup. Other'n that, the only F1 I've watched is crash compilations & historic doco's...

I agree and I think it's because NASCAR has taken a plunge. I don't want to say, "dying" but it's not doing good. Even though the racing, in my opinion, has been a lot better compared to years prior.
But it does seem like F1 may be making similar mistakes that made NASCAR go from the second largest spectator sport in the US to being as popular as golf.

I, as a NASCAR fan, warned F1 fans about this on a comment I left on another video. Lo and behold, my warning is becoming true.
and before any gives any gripes, yes, yes I *did* try to get into F1. But between the elitist attitude, they're treating of the USA and us Americans as cash cows, how our drivers are treated as the outsiders and how unwelcomed they are, the lack of on track action and how every race is more of a spectacle than an actual race, money chasing instead of going to nations that actually deserve to host a race, and how every race can be dominated by just one driver? I was driven away. I tried it. Multiple times. I hate F1. I hate the fact that I even KNOW F1. And unless they change for the better? I'm not gonna waste any more of my breath or my time on them.
