My interest is more in urushi, so I will add some info on it's finish ;) Finish is roiro (roiro-migaki) which means that top layer (last of colour layers) is polished with uwazuri technique (several applications of high-quality raw lacquer, rubbed in, then wiped completely off with special paper), the polished with migako powder miced with oil, then another layer of urushi and a final polish with pure migako powder. As for colour it is vermilion or "shu" or cinnabar - urushi (kijiro probably) is mixed with pigment - cinnabar - mercury sulfide. This colour can differ from other "vermilion" pens, as it is influenced by quality and version of pigment, amount of pigment, thickness of layers, number of layers and most of all - humidity of curing (in this cas it is probably quite low). Kokkokai is a name of GROUP of urushi artists, who are from the "school" of Gonroku Matsuda - a great master who become "living national treasure" of Japan. I doubt this finish was made by maki-e master, I think it is more likely urushi craftsman or maki-e apprentice (maki-e master rarely make themselves such basic techniques as roiro). Pen is indeed ebonite, but section is resin and is unlacquered. It is difficult to say how many layers there are on the pen - excluding uwazuri, can be anything between 3 and 20, but I would expect lower number of layr of hight quiality from Kokkokai artist.

That would be great Michal, thank you! I'd love to know more about some of the urushi and techniques used and likewise Tamenuri. I've picked up quite a bit from searching but finding it out from someone close to urushi would be much better!
Many thanks for the comments about the collection! I'm looking to add a lot more urushi to my collection :) Like everything it's a collection that evolves over time, and urushi when it's done right can look really great with the varying shades it can leave from layering different pigments.

Strangely enough Eric, since I have had this for a couple of months, I keep seeing pictures online in my feeds of what I think it the Pilot Custom Urushi Vermilion but it turns out to be a Parker Duofold! Very similar in design!
Dave, my wife has that very pen, and she loves it. I have the same pen in black. Love the big nib, and despite the girth, they are quite comfortable to write with. If you buy it, I can’t imagine you won’t be happy with it. Best wishes.

Dave, you really should get that pen! I am struck by how good it looks, and that gorgeous nib. In a perfect world, it might have the Visconti double chamber power filler system, but the CON70 does hold a lot of ink for a converter, and it cleans more easily. It really looks good in the hand too. I'm so blown away by this review that I interrupted the video to go to online stores to price the pen for myself.
You're right Joe on every account! The CON70 does hold a lot of ink, I've been quite surprised at how much it does hold in that converter.
This is one of my very favorite pens. I was fortunate to have Mike Masuyama tune both of mine for me. Nice review, Dave.
It really is a nice pen Mark as you know, although it nearly got away from me, I picked this one up 3rd hand but glad I didn't let it go a second time!

Just received mine. I love this pen. So far I have the pilot 823 and 845 and loved them so I bought the Custom Urushi. The pen writes wet and beautiful. My Nib is Medium and perfect. Smooth as the other pilots with a hint of feedback. Why did you say you are going to try to not buy it ?
At the time I had bought quite a few pens, and I was a bit on the fence with this one I think because of that. I'm glad I did buy it though, I do enjoy the large nib. I do find the ink flow isn't as generous as I would like, if you push the nib a little it does railroad, but I've learned to not flex the nib as much as I would like. It's a great solid writer.
@@PenultimateDave so odd how they vary from pen to pen. This one writes great but I did need to send my Montblanc 146 calligraphy back to have it's nib fixed and I needed to send my Visconti homisapien blizzard to a nibmeister. Crazy how each pen is different.
I think the custom urushi is a little too big, but the vermillion 845 looks perfect.

Does the "Custom" designation differentiate it from a more basic level for the same pen?
I think the "Custom" name is just a model name. You can get cheaper pens like the Pilot Custom 74, the Pilot Custom 823 and then something as large and more expensive as the Pilot Custom Urushi. There is some belief though that the name "Custom" was given the name because of the amount of customisation you can have in terms of the different nibs that it has. e.g. Posting (PO), Waverly (WA), Stub (ST), Falcon (FA). The number though like a Pilot Custom 74 or 823 I believe refers to the price in yen.

Buy it in Japan. It's ridiculously marked up in western markets.
@@PenultimateDave Better pricing if you buy grey market from a Japanese seller that ships internationally, or even better if you can buy it in Japan when on a trip. Pilot pricing in the USA is punative and completely unreasonable, especially for their urushi pens.
I like the pen, but I've drawn the line at nothing bigger than a Visconti Homo Sapiens. I really wanted the Pelikan Green Ray which I consider the ultimate in Raden, but I can't bring myself to spend $3,200 on one pen.
After coming to the conclusion that my two Pilot Custom 823 medium nib pens are my most pleasant writers, I'm considering a Namiki in either the Yukari or Chinkin lines. They run a bit more than the Custom Urushi but the artwork and craftsmanship involved makes the prices reasonable to me.
I can't wait until you get down to an ultra extra fine preference in nibs, lol. 😉
The Pelikan Green Ray is nice but I completely agree about the price. The other two Pelikan M1000 Raden's I have I managed to get at a large discount so they were more worth picking up but they were still above my comfort zone for a new pen. I'm not sure I could ever get down to liking extra fine nibs, I have a couple but fine is I think probably the finest I can probably go, at least for the time being, but watch this space lol.

I absolutely love your two Raden pens and would love to have those versions. Anyway, I just ordered a Namiki Yukari Pine Needles with a medium nib which is not only Maki-e but also a bit of Raden also. This will be the most I've spent on any pen so far, so I better love it too, lol.

Hey Chris, we seem to be very similar in fountain pen desires and likes! I also have 2 Pilot Custom 823's, but in a F nib. Pilot/Namiki is certainly my first choice and favorite pen company. Last year I picked up a Namiki Yukari Herb decoration and love it! Namiki really does have some great artisans for their pens. I also love the Chinkin art, but I think my next BIG purchase is probably going to be a Namiki Yukari Royal - Night in Pavilion.

The "Herb" version is a pretty one, like all of them. I was considering a Chinkin style at one time but I've really backed off on the hobby. I got a bit burned out and haven't even been watching any of the pen channels for quite some time. Maybe I will regain my interest in the future but I'm not sure.
How different does it write compared to a 823,homo Sapiens 23palladium and sailor king of pen?
The only 823's I've owned are the FA Specialty nibs, the nib is a little bouncy but not as bouncy or flexy as a 23kt Palladium nib, probably similar to a Sailor 21kt gold King of Pen nib I would say.

Thanks Krishna, that's interesting, I notice the nib is slightly larger than Bock #8 nibs, did you have much problem getting it to fit? Did you use the Bock feed?

I like products and info. Absolutely need to do something different about your angle. I get vertigo watching it. Too zoomed in.
That's interesting Rene. Do you also get vertigo from writing with your pens and looking at them? Just wondering, I suffer from vertigo myself but I only suffer from vertigo at great heights and not from watching anything on a video.
Love this pen, but I find fountain pens very unpractical for daily life. They're more of a hobby. I would love if Pilot pens like this one came in ballpoint configuration, That's pretty much all that I write with
It is available in ballpoint, both in black and vermilion finishes. Would make for a rather impressive set.
