    My grandpa took me to my first MLB game, Cubs vs. Dodgers June 19th 1996. I caught a foul ball, my grandpa though, he ended up on TV. My grandpa had a big beard at the time, and he was sitting there and the camera caught him Harry Caray said "That guy was clean shaven when this game started." I was so pissed that I didn't end up on TV, but now that I'm older, maybe a bit wiser, I'm glad I got the ball and grandpa got the coverage. He got to have that moment with a legend of baseball lore, and he deserved it.

    The key thing missing from Ferrell's impersonation is the smile and joy always bubbling in Harry.

    He pretty much was the voice of Midwest Baseball for over 50 years, considering he called St Louis Cardinals games, and for the Cubs and the Sox.

    As a lifelong Cub fan, I will always identify Harry with the Cubs. I will breakout a Harry impression every now & then. I know in his heart, Harry will always love the Cardinals first, understandably, but his second love, the Cubs, is where his fame really took off. He was also great with Jimmy Piersall calling White Sox games albeit sometimes downright raunchy yet enjoyable.

    This video is so enjoyable! As a life long St. Louisan and Cards fan I really liked Jack Buck as an announcer when I got older, but when I was a kid growing up in the 1960s so much of what got me in to Baseball was listenening to Harry Caray calling a Cardinals game on the radio. He just made the games so exciting on the radio. I remember listening to my transistor radio the excitement of a home run or the intense drama of a bottom of the 9th inning in Candlestick with Bob Gibson facing a slugger like Mays or Mc Covey with the game on the line with each pitch. Thanks for placing on RUclips.

    I was watching a game and the hitter hits a routine fly ball to right center. The centerfielder gets under the fly ball. The ball hits the top of his glove and goes over his head and a run scores. Harry said, " I've been broadcasting baseball for a long time, and that's the worst play I have ever seen. I was hooked. A Cubs for the rest of my life. Thank You Harry Cary. Miss You.

    I recall reading that Harry broadcasted White Sox games on a station in which the great majority of its programming was in Albanian; he says he never tried to learn how to say "Holy cow!" in that language.
    Harry, this is for YOU! "Holy cow!" in Albanian ---> *Lopë e shenjtë!*

    • @lvdude8631
      @lvdude8631 2 года назад

      That's interesting, because Harry was Albanian. He always said he was Italian, but records show both of his parents were born in Albania. I think being orphaned made him want to forget about his roots. It's also possible that his family didn't teach him intentionally, as older generations of immigrants wanted their children into assimilating as much and as quickly as possible to avoid discrimination.

    The hardest clip to watch is at the end of the 1995 season. Caray laments the season that just ended, and began crying uncontrollably on the air. It was so sad. It was as if Harry knew he didn't have much longer. He would have LOVED the 1998 season.
