  • Well, here it is. The big one. This is the last dam I have to remove on this stream. I probably should have brought some help lol. It was definitely a nice day for it. I can't believe how much mud was on my face. Glad I wore sunglasses.
    Enjoy!

    I love to see the different techniques used by the different beaver dam removal RUclipsrs. But the Potato Rake seems o be the ultimate weapon. Very relaxing and wonderful to watch. One minor gripe.. the camera was set a little to high so that it shone into the lens which made comparing before and after a little difficult.

    • @geneplumley4136
      @geneplumley4136  Год назад

      Thanks Ekkehard. Yes, the potato rake is my weapon of choice. I know what you mean about the camera angle. I had a hard time finding a spot for the camera on this one. I would have liked it a bit closer as well but I was afraid the current would wash my camera away. I also had to start pretty late in the day, which caught the sun setting. I prefer the early morning.

      Hi. I would have to say 10, 😁.
      I get paid to do this. Our township gets me to remove these from their drainage systems. This creek has to drain for farm fields and roads. When the water gets raised bad stuff happens. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend it.

    So on the last dam I watched ya'll tear out I kept thinking the guy who owns the green canoe will come and confront you before you can get out of there. But here I see the canoe and realize you travel to the dam down the slew. This dam was very difficult and having the sun shining into the camera was not good. On your last dam the light was perfect, on this one not so much.

    • @geneplumley4136
      @geneplumley4136  4 месяца назад

      Hey Paul.
      That's funny, 🛶. I get a lot of work because I use the canoe to access the dams. The alternative is to make trails through the bush with excavators. It's pretty easy to offer my services for much cheaper. Sometimes, I travel 10 km's or over 6 miles to get there. $0 fuel costs, 💪. Lol.
      I was pretty disappointed with the light as well. I wish the camera was closer to. Then I threw the stick and blocked the view, 🤦.

    • @geneplumley4136
      @geneplumley4136  Год назад +2

      Hey, Thanks.
      There was one more really small one. There were several lodges along this stream. They also live in bank dens. Which is just a tunnel dug into the side of the stream. This can be a challenge to find them because they make them everywhere. The beavers come from the surrounding lakes. At age 2 they are forced to leave home and find their own place to live.

    • @geneplumley4136
      @geneplumley4136  Год назад +1

      I am guessing around 2 or so years but I am not certain. If it were older there would be more decomposed sticks at the lower end of the dam. The older ones have a thicker/wider foundations as well. I am pretty sure they were in there with equient not to long ago and they would have removed it then. I will post some videos of really old dams later this month. I can't remove those ones though.

    How long do you think it took the beavers 🦫( I'm assuming more than 1 built that huge dam) to build that dam? You took it down in a couple of hours, do you ever have to revisit the same locations over and over, or do the beavers pick a new location. If they do rebuild, do they use new material or just gather back up the stuff you threw on the side of the river?

    • @geneplumley4136
      @geneplumley4136  Год назад

      Hi John
      This dam was a few years old, at least. I do revisit the same places sometimes. It usually starts off like this one. Then, a few will come back and rebuild it smaller. It also depends on the people affected by it, complaining. This system, I am pretty sure, had 20 or so beavers in it. It really depends on the surrounding area. If there are lakes alongside these drains, then new beavers work their way in almost yearly. Other places I never have to go back to....
      I find more often they will use new material. They definitely reuse the sticks I throw as well, though. I am getting more trail cam footage this year. Hopefully, we can see them in action.

      @@geneplumley4136 thanks for the reply Gene. I've been watching quite a few videos of beaverdam takedowns and nobody has asked these questions and I was curious cause I know these creatures are relentless in their efforts to remake their home accessible once the water level drops below the beaver hut access. And obviously the only way to do that is to rebuild the dam. It sure seemed that dam you took down was one of the wider ones that I've seen but it was hard to tell just how wide, did you get a measurement before you took it down?

    What if people who pay themselves sick to go to the gym would do something useful like this instead?
    It would provide much more extensive training plus a great deal of satisfaction in seeing something done!
    I myself built rapids as a youngster, which was needed for both fish and crayfish! And it was certainly satisfying to succeed in getting several hundred Kg heavy stones back in place and what a life-threatening current there was in the openings! But every year the ice break destroyed everything and it was precisely the digging of the rocks upstream that was the hard part. Then both forests and marshlands were dug out, which made the water too cold, because the water level rose on the same day it rained, which used to take at least a week if it rose at all! In addition, the water was transformed from crystal clear spring water to opaque brownish by all the soil that was both acidic and filled with heavy metals, which today helped to make all fish from the Baltic Sea inedible in large quantities...
    Then it was a protected watercourse, but money always takes precedence over nature, which the whole of humanity will probably learn is fatal in the long run...

      Hi Tommy. I kind of look at it this way..... I go to the gym, so that I can do this. Believe me though, I skip gym day on these days, lol.
      It is hard to beat playing in running water.
      Thanks for watching

      @@geneplumley4136 Thanks for your kindly message! We are all different from eight other and I have never needed any gym but stretching is another thing because if you work hard, your flexibility becomes worse, which must be followed! Since I have been given the most impossible tasks, I have needed both! But after crushing the left heel, I had to stop running the short way between the walls 20 meters up in the air via an admittedly really rough I-beam, but you have to be able to trust your balance because you only fall once against a concrete floor from that height…
      I've always wanted to carry as much as possible at a time, so instead of taking just one 40 kg bag of cement, I usually carried three or four at a time.
      When I was young, I took risks and jumped between slippery rocks and I'm alive, so it turns out that I judged correctly, but don't get any refractive error in your eyes, because then it's over with a lot of that, as well as ball sports and other things, could learn the misdirection but it is different in different angles and varies according to how tired I am...
      Take care of yourself as you feel is the best and we do our best to respect the choices of others as long as they do something at all and actually even those who are thought to be lazy because there are diseases that cannot be seen that can force one to do least possible...

      Thanks John.
      I did have a moment before I started, lol. Standing there looking at the dam thinking to myself, "is this to much?"
      I didn't know if I was going to get through it haha. Usually I bring help on the bigger ones.
      Thanks for watching.
