i still remember when ps2 came out, and my friend didnt know he needed a memory card, he left his ps2 on for like a week and a half untill he could get one hahahaha
fireheartis1 it’s still not ugly at all. I still have mine and still working. I usually just play my old fighting games like CVS2, 3rd Strike, Tekken Tag, and Marvel Verses Capcom 2.
I have to admit when i first saw a picture of it in a games magazine back in early 2000 or something i thought it was ugly, i was expecting something to ressemble the PS1. One of the best consoles ever made though without doubt and i still have my fat PS2 today which still works.

I am starting to collect for the PS2. This and the N64 are my favorite consoles. I still get the chills when i look at my ps2’s original big blue box. The feeling I got as a 12 year old when I unboxed it on launch day is one I’ll never forget. My dad worked 4 months worth of overtime, took the day off and let me stay home from school so I can play Tekken Tag all day. I woke up to go to school and he told me to look next to the couch. Saw that infamous blue Best Buy bag. Peeked inside and there it was “PS2” logo staring up at me. I screamed and gave him the biggest hug. He camped outside out local Best Buy for about 6 hours ( midnight release ) Didn’t know it had its own on/off switch in the back at first but I figured it out. Powered it on and I made sure I had our old JVC Television turned up so I can hear it’s into. Once the drink tray extended, put the game in and it booted up, I was bedazzled by it’s smooth graphics and fluid gameplay. Amazing times. I had a blast playing for a good 2 hours. Then my dad tells me he wants to take me to Denny’s for breakfast. All of that excitement and it turned out he forgot to buy a memory card. 😭 yes folks. Never forget the god damn memory card ! Lol cheers !
I got my PS2 Christmas 2000 and I still play it over 22 years later! Sony made one hell of a great console! And man there are a TON of awesome PS2 games!
My parents are moving and we found a ton of old games and hardware in the basement. I checked on eStarland and I have over $300 worth of games, most of which are shovelware I don't remember ever having. About to get a ton of free money. I'm keeping my PS2 though. Just hooked it up. I have four memory cards and I'm playing whatever hasn't been re-released digitally or remade. Gundam Journey to Jaburo, check. MGS2.... I have the HD port on PS3. God of War.... I can get it digitally on PS5. The Getaway, let me fire up that old 23-year-old beast.

mine to i got it day one, mind you i have 4 ps2's, got mine then someone gave me one like 4 years ago, then my brother was going to throw out his ps2 slim, i said hey man i will take it so i got that. and about 3 weeks ago i had to buy a new ps3, so i looked on the market place found a ps3 slim, ps2 fat and a ps1 bundle, with tonnes of games for 150. even got a decent copy of diablo 1 with the bundle for the ps1.
Praveen Sharma not much. The slim couldn't hold a hard drive but no one used one for the ps2 anyway so biggest difference I would say is how big the system is itself and maybe small things like Power(as in watts) and cost of manufacturing
But get the first release tho. There is a glitch where if you fly or use a boat and go away from the map for 30-60 minutes and commit suicide, when you spawn the map will have more gang territories.
I got mine a couple of years ago for $35, it was a near mint slim. It had a controller, no memory card, and harry poter and the half blood prince ps2 port. I guess your deal was a little more on the expensive side, but still ok.
That was a huge letdown though, many games didn't run properly, and at launch sony promised to fix it, and increase compatibility, but then they figured "hey! we can just let people pay for it again on PSN!" and they ditched the Backwards compatibility. Games like ratchet & clank or the Jak series were prettymuch unplayable due to it being very slow, or just outright crashing at certain points in the game blocking you from getting any further into the game.
CPPRODUCTIONS1001 I agree the fat looked much nicer. I am still amazed looking at them side by side and seeing just how much smaller "Slim" was. You could probably fit 2 full ps2 slims AND their power supplies inside the case of an original ps2 fat. I'd not recommend playing them since they'd probably melt but you could do it lol

However, I'll change a few things around for the sake of it! - Burnout 3: Takedown (Still the best racing game imo!) - Rez (Psychedelic!) - Gradius V (Including a Shmup because it would be blasphemy to not include at least one!) - WipeOut Pulse (I'm a big fan of WipeOut & this PSP port is awesome imo!) - Kingdom Hearts - Shadow of the Colossus - Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil - Twisted Metal: Black - God of War - Persona 3 FES PS2 has such a monstrous library there is just too many games to pick from!! This is an impossible question in many ways MetalJesus!
Be warned that the slim laser ribbon cable can become unstuck from the case and start scratching the discs in a circular pattern. There is one model immune to this, the 7900x series. Also be aware that the Slims have some rare compatibility issues in both PS2 and PS1 games that may cause audio issues, save bugs and the like. As for the fats, the 3900x series is considered the most reliable; avoid early 3000x (non-R) units, as replacement parts for these can be difficult to aquire (especially those with 10 screws on bottom).
I've experience this not too long ago w/ vice city, I know for a fact that disc was clean then all of a sudden I noticed a circular scratch luckily it was only vice city so if worst comes to worst, that's an inexpensive game to replace

My PS2 works fine after all these years. I got it used back in 2008 or 2009, and it was my first console. It has no issues, and I still play on it sometimes. I have so many games for it!
I just bought a ps2 slim after watching this last week off a friend of mine who is 66. He bought it new in 2002 and used it maybe 2x. I got me basically a new unit for $60 :)....so far it plays black blue and silver discs no issues :D
The blue disks were CD games, thats why they only come out in the first couple of years of the PS2 life cycle, before every company started to use DVDs as the standard, and thats why the console has so many problems reading them, the laser reader was build for DVDs, not for CDs
+metalkingconqueror It doesn't have 2 lasers but the laser itself reads dvds in a totally different way than CDs (in such a way that you can actually adjust the laser power individually for cds and dvds)
apiz arsha-veen I still have my original PS2 (bulky black one), bought it new in 2002. And it still works after all this time, the door can stick at times, but mainly it needs a cleaning. And it is hard to to do because of how it is set up on the shelf. I have many systems hooked up to the same TV, close to 10 or so. NES, SNES, Sega Master System, Sega Genesis, Panasonic 3DO, PS2, XBox 360. On another TV I have the Coleco Vision, Atari 2600, and the Atari 400 computer.
As a film buff, the PS2 era was notable to me for how many surprisingly great licensed games came out on it. The Godfather, Scarface, The Thing, From Russia With Love (with Sean Connery back as Bond!), Simpsons Hit & Run, The Punisher, and a bunch of others I'm probably forgetting. Licensed/tie-in games have always had a negative reputation for being bad, but this was the one era where they shined. Unfortunately, the licensing issues makes it tough for any of these games to get a modern re-release.

The PS2 Fat is unreliable? Really? I've had my PS2 fat since March 2001, and it still reads PS1, Blue PS2, and DVD PS2 games perfectly. And my PS2 Slim I got in 2007, and it broke last year...

GTA Vice City (I know some ppl prefer 3 or SA but this one is more memorable) 4. Devil May Cry 5. God of War 6. Final Fantasy X 7. Guitar Hero III 8. Katamari Damacy 9. Kingdom Hearts 10. Prince of Persia the Sands of Time Now to be fair there are sports and racing games I didn’t include for two reasons 1.) I prefer story and character focused games and 2.) these are ones that I think every ps2 fan would also cite as must haves without any direct competition like you see with sports and racing games
Oh Kate, first time I got a PS2 it was my birthday on 6 July 2005 and it was a Slim one + I could choose 5 games out of a whole store filled with PS2 games and consoles, probably 1000+ so you can guess how much I was brain-boosting at that time. 😂 Your list is awsome and I’m surprised you played those games, as a woman that you are.
It's also a damn-sight quieter than the original 3xxxxx series; they even advertised it on the box! Runs a lot cooler too; I have a 300003 original UK launch model, and a 50003 (UK) - it's my 'goto' PS2..... And also a nice little silver 750003 slim model...though that one gets Very warm during use, and is a little less compatible with both PS2 and Ps1 games! Not a lot, but it could be deal-breaker depending on your game types.
Didn't the bigger ones have better fans bc my cousin has the original ps2 and I have the slim and his was always cooler than mine when we played his I use to bring my memory card over and spiderman friend or foe and he brought his memory card and Lego Batman.
You're confusing the Linux kit with the Other OS functionality for the PS3. The PS2 had a Linux kit but the linux capability was never taken away (the PS2's firmware isn't even updatable, it depends on the memory card for updates). On the PS3 you could install whatever PowerPC linux you wanted just via software, but then it was found exploitable and sony just removed it.
MarcoZ - Linux for PlayStation 2 (or PS2 Linux) is a kit released by Sony Computer Entertainment in 2002 that allows the PlayStation 2 console to be used as a personal computer.
I feel the Xbox/PS2/GameCube era was a generation really worth jumping into. I do think the following generation ended up having better games overal/eventually, but the ps2 era was more exciting as it was the transition from niche to mainstream and during that gen the graphics improved immensely.
So I bought myself a PS2 that looks almost brand new for 35€ which included a memory card as well. Turns out, that original memory card was never opened and is still sealed and is worth 30€ on eBay. So I almost got a free PS2! I’m in love with this console. Brings back so many memories of my childhood. Would love to hear your stories with this console!

Anson D. Grimes Vice City Stories and Liberty City Stories are way better compared to Vice City and III. I really like the trilogy, but Stories are way better in terms of not-storyline missions.
Two quick Fun Facts: The little logo on the front of the PS2, at least the fat model can be swiveled for whichever way you have your console horizontal or vertical. Also on the bootup menu for the PS2 the little silver bar tower looking things are representative of how many games you have played on the console and how far you got into them!
I'm pretty sure the orbs are how many game saves you have also. I can't believe they didn't know that the blue bottom disc were cd based ps2 games. I'm sure they know by now..

Yeah me too, I have spent thousands of hours on both of the consoles but I have to say I've never had any problems with fat one, which I cant say for the slim, after a year or so of using it, it started not to read discs like if they were damaged or something and fat one would play those same dvd's without problem, and after all those years it's still working like a charm.
I got my slim back in 2004 when I first got the console and it refused to read one of my copies of gta San Andreas, so I had to buy another copy. A year or so ago, I bought a fat really cheap in a pawn shop, and when I tried the broken copy of gta, it worked like a charm. I've also tested loads of filthy ones, literally brown with dust, for a charity shop and I have never seen one die. I guess I'm lucky.
The closest I have ever came to my ps2's dying was that I had the slim that was recalled for exploding power bricks, and mine exploded back in 2007, console still worked though, but needed new cables! It melted to the carpet lol
I absolutely love the PlayStation 2. I have been collecting for years and years now my collection and total for all consoles is it just under 2,000 games. But my PS2 collection is just under 800 games. I think there's a round almost 3,000 games and total for the PS2. But, that's taking in consideration that there's Black Label, Greatest Hits, box sets, collector sets Etc. I still collect video games even though six months ago I went blind and visually impaired. I can no longer play video games however, is not stop me from collecting. So if I had any advice for somebody just starting out on PS2 collecting this is what I have to say. 1. Try not to spend more than $3 on a video game unless you know that it's a very rare game defined. 2. Do not be afraid to ask people if they have any old games or consoles laying around their house. Always offer to pay but chances are they will just give it to you anyway and that's me learning from experience. Also go to Goodwill's and thrift shops. 3. Get a app on your phone that allows you to make a library of all the games you collect. Because once you're collection gets over a few hundred games you're going to find yourself buying doubles and triples a lot. An app allows you to go through your library and see if you already own it. Android and Apple Store have free apps that are worth owning. 4. Try to buy Black Label Originals and greatest hits of the same titles. It makes your collection look even bigger and it's just good to own both. Sometimes the greatest hit versions had little surprises added. 5. Learn one word and love it. That word is barter. People who collect video games love to trade and chances are if you are collecting you're going to get big hits at times of a box full of games so you're going to come across doubles or triples and you will have plenty. 6. In my final piece of advice. When you start putting these games on the shelves at your house or in your apartment I recommend you buy sleeves to cover the cases. The reason for this is if you find a game that's completely mint and in perfect condition just drop it in a sleeve. You will not find yourself wondering if the game you have is meant or the game you just got is better condition wise you already know the one on your shelf is mint saves you a ton of time. Collecting video games is such a fun hobby so good luck and have fun. I almost forgot and because I'm visually impaired I'm adding it to the end and not editing I can't even read what I already wrote LOL. And my advice is whenever you go to a thrift shop or a Goodwill or Salvation Army Etc always, and I mean always look through the music CDs. I say this because I always find at least one or two PS1 games mixed in. And usually when you find a PS1 game it's always meant incomplete. Have fun collecting.

I'm going to be making a video game tour video of my man cave. So yes I still have been collecting but nothing like I was before. It's almost impossible nowadays to find games. And when you do find them everybody wants an arm and a leg form. It is kind of killed the fun for it for me. Went to a few yard sales and a flea market this year and got some good finds. Thank God for the wife. She catches the hidden gems for me. However, my game room has evolved since the last 3 years. Turn into a video game/ movie theater. Nothing fancy. All low dollar stuff. However, my daughter and my son and his friends thinks it's awesome and that's enough for me to smile. It's always good to know that someone's thinking about me. And yes I have found a few games I can play since my blindness. Most are on the Oculus VR headset. Like poker, VR, etc. Well I won't gab your ear off or your eyeballs. Lol. @@fames4514 I have a small collection of pal PS2 games. Recently, my Nintendo NES collection has grown quite a bit. I have about five copies of Mike Tyson's punch out. Lol. Netherlands sounds like an amazing place every time I hear about it. One day I'd like to travel there or Ireland goes game hunting. I've heard there's a lot of good games to be found in those areas. I have plenty of friends that have RP and all of them live happily with their affliction. I have one friend who recently lost all his vision after having RP for the last 25 years or so. But he amazes me because he still does everything he ever used to pretty much. He just adapted and found new ways to do everything. Although, I'm hearing through the grapevine that there is a lot of new technology coming out to help people with RP. So you never know you will probably have that cure before you know it. I listen to a video about a man who had RP and had rod surgery and was able to see again. There's actually a video I think on RUclips where they're taking off the patches and he sees his daughters faces for the first time. I disliked the original PS2 design when the slim came along. Now, it’s grown on me. The fact that it resembles a computer tower is neat. Also, that internal HDD that goes into the Expansion Bay can be used as a replacement for memory cards so if you have a big library, it’ll make it much more convenient.

ian haddow I think they were pretty awesome at the time because of the cutscenes from the movies and fun multiplayer action. Especially Return of the King was really enjoyable in two player mode.
In GTA 4 it's WAY too easy to get money. It's a shame really. Ofc you could just prevent that one race doesn't exist at all, and not win it over and over again for money...
Recently I'm starting off my PS2 collection with a fat model along with the first Ratchet and two Jak games. Also the first three DMC, Silent Hill 2, Final Fantasy X / X-2, .hack, RE Code Veronica, and Dirge of Cerberus
I have had my fat PS2 since two weeks from release. I have never had an issue with it. She still plays all my PS2 games fine. I added a network adaptor later and played socom online. I did not get a slim till 2017 at a yard sale for 5 bucks. I got it as a back up. Don't be down on plus size girls!
Basically yeah, parents bought it for the whole family and I pretty much just watched until I completely learned. Also, the original comment was posted 8 months ago, we got it when I was 4 years old.
I think my Dad bought mine when it came out in 2000, I was 2 when it came out but I still grew up with this and the Gamecube, my PS2 still works great to this day, it's a little dirty but still great
You have to be careful with ps2 slim as it's easy for the ribbon to get caught in a position where it creates circular scratches on discs you use which can cause them to be unplayable.
Yea there's different models of the slim. The launch slim and the later slims with redesigned internals. I have two of the later ones. They both work fine and have had both since like 2007 and I don't think they can overheat. There's also the latest ps2 slims with the built in power supply and updated modern design. I'm pretty sure those are reliable too.
Mr.Plankton Early slim models had lasers locked on max performance, which burned it quickly. Later 9000x models fixed this. I have made since 2008 and still working. Also, proper care and cleaning helps.
The PlayStation2 has to be, in my opinion, one of the best consoles in terms of performance, library, and reliability. I still love playing mine and I'm always on the lookout for more games. One of my first PlayStation2 games that made me fall in love with the system was Gran Turismo 4. It was a great racing simulator with tons of cars, tracks, and difficult A.I. It even required you to obtain licenses for certain events, and if you didn't figure out how to drive correctly, you simply didn't win. It was a great game that, I think, deserves to be talked about with other PS2 classics, like Ratchet and Clank, RE4, DMC, etc. Another, one that I think few people know about, is Freekstyle; an extreme motor-cross game with insane tracks and outrageous tricks. Think Moto Racer on steroids. It even had real motor-cross drivers and a really idiotic, yet hilarious, sense of humor. Worth looking into for anyone who likes over-the-top, bizarre racing games. This is easily my favorite system and 'm not sure anything can change that.
Just a note, I've never had a problem of any kind with a fat model. In fact, it's probably the game system I've ever owned that I've never had a single issue with ever. I guess looking back, never had anything with the Gamecube either. Xbox got a sticky disc drive, Gameboy speakers dimmed, 360 overheated/red ringed. PS4 constantly has system fails. The PS2 was the first console I ever owned, and for a long long long time it was the only console I ever owned. It never failed in any way. I must have sold it along the line for other stuff, because I hadn't played a PS2 in YEARS until recently. I'm a dealer, so I had a couple slims sitting around. Booted up GTA III, and I could only play maybe 5 minutes before it was white hot. It would shut off after another 10-20 minutes at the most. Same with the other, although this one would just get red hot and stay hot as long as you played the thing. I found an even more ancient Fat that was almost literally caked with dust on the inside, worked like it was out the box day one. I remember with the slims, if you bumped or moved it while it played, you ran serious risk of the game freezing. I remember once me and a friend were playing on a Fat, it got knocked off the table (oh the days of wired controllers) and fell a good 4-5 feet onto the concrete of the garage. Not a thing happened. We were in the middle of a game, so we just left it there while we finished before shutting it down and putting it back on the table.

Flawless Fatality yoooo Black was my favourite, so dark, depressing, even at some point scary. Also that "Paint It, Black" at the menu was sooooo good.
Yup, the only comparison I can make going from Twisted Metal 4 to Twisted Metal Black was Batman and Robin going to The Dark Knight trilogy. That game is toally psychotic and in my personal opinion, one of the games that pushed the M rating the most of any game ever. Probably one of the top 10 most fucked up games of all time.

I also agree that this is the best console of all time. They were like a rock reliable, the slim was so compact and sleek looking, the library is absolutely huge. I put so many hours on both mine, I had a slim and original. I love the loading sound with the blocks, I loved the animated game saves too

3:10 I'm sure someone else has already mentioned this in the comments, but the blue bottom PS2 discs are CD roms (700mb), so they're just games that aren't very large from a data standpoint. The more common silver bottom PS2 discs are DVD roms (4.7gb), and of course as mentioned, the black bottom discs are only PS1 games are are CD roms (700mb) like the blue bottoms PS2 discs.
That would be a tough list to make. There are 100s of games that could make it. You definitely want some games with replay value. I like that you added shadow of the Collosus on there because if you beat the game, you have great replayability time wise. Love it. I must say it almost broke my heart destroying such beautiful things. It still is one of my fav gaming experiences. A true masterpiece.

MetalJesusRocks funny thing about HDD's is they are indeed easier to wear down because they take longer to load programs, increased weight and heat production over the SSD's which usually start up much faster (but do lack the ability to read discs so it is a trade off!)

Gaming collecting in Brazil is practically impossible, that white ps2 went for U$12.99 as i see in the back? That's unspeakable, around here, converting, it would be around U$100 and i'm being nice. Flea markets with games for a dollar? up to 20 even? Unheard of. Try 50 or higher. Even really popular games, even greatest hits versions, all goes for around that. There is no common games here if it's old it's rare, if it's old and well know it's rarer. Your game collection probably worth a million here. I swear to god.
There's really FOUR generations of PS2 hardware. The original fat which has a Firewire IEEE 1394 port on the front, the updated fat which dropped it and improved the laser and cooling (I believe), the first generation of slim, and the second generation of slim (that did away with the power brick). The model numbers are SCPH-300xx/500xx/700xx/900xx respectively.
Michael Estrada You can use a slim model but the console version can'st be higher than 9xxxx. A slim 75000 worked fine. :) You lack the ability to use hard drive but you can play via your LAN (load game backups from an SMB server on your PC). Loading times are great!
Michael Estrada It's possible if you use the ELF Version of Swapmagic... It's not worth paying for Swapmagic, but you will have to mod the way your PS2 Opens up and depending on if you have a Fat or Slim, you will need a Different tutorial.
One note about playing PS1 backwards compatibility on PS2: The PS2 used the PS1's CPU chip as its I/O processor, and this caused trouble with some games. Some games wont play at all and other are much slower on the PS2. I remember Final Fantasy IX's load times being unplayably slow.

I have to admit when i first saw a picture of it in a games magazine back in early 2000 or something i thought it was ugly, i was expecting something to ressemble the PS1. One of the best consoles ever made though without doubt and i still have my fat PS2 today which still works.

I am starting to collect for the PS2. This and the N64 are my favorite consoles. I still get the chills when i look at my ps2’s original big blue box. The feeling I got as a 12 year old when I unboxed it on launch day is one I’ll never forget. My dad worked 4 months worth of overtime, took the day off and let me stay home from school so I can play Tekken Tag all day. I woke up to go to school and he told me to look next to the couch. Saw that infamous blue Best Buy bag. Peeked inside and there it was “PS2” logo staring up at me. I screamed and gave him the biggest hug. He camped outside out local Best Buy for about 6 hours ( midnight release ) Didn’t know it had its own on/off switch in the back at first but I figured it out. Powered it on and I made sure I had our old JVC Television turned up so I can hear it’s into. Once the drink tray extended, put the game in and it booted up, I was bedazzled by it’s smooth graphics and fluid gameplay. Amazing times. I had a blast playing for a good 2 hours. Then my dad tells me he wants to take me to Denny’s for breakfast. All of that excitement and it turned out he forgot to buy a memory card. 😭 yes folks. Never forget the god damn memory card !

Praveen Sharma not much. The slim couldn't hold a hard drive but no one used one for the ps2 anyway so biggest difference I would say is how big the system is itself and maybe small things like Power(as in watts) and cost of manufacturing

The first edition of the ps3 can play ps2 and ps1 games.
That was a huge letdown though, many games didn't run properly, and at launch sony promised to fix it, and increase compatibility, but then they figured "hey! we can just let people pay for it again on PSN!" and they ditched the Backwards compatibility.
Games like ratchet & clank or the Jak series were prettymuch unplayable due to it being very slow, or just outright crashing at certain points in the game blocking you from getting any further into the game.

PS2 has such a monstrous library there is just too many games to pick from!! This is an impossible question in many ways MetalJesus!
Be warned that the slim laser ribbon cable can become unstuck from the case and start scratching the discs in a circular pattern. There is one model immune to this, the 7900x series. Also be aware that the Slims have some rare compatibility issues in both PS2 and PS1 games that may cause audio issues, save bugs and the like. As for the fats, the 3900x series is considered the most reliable; avoid early 3000x (non-R) units, as replacement parts for these can be difficult to aquire (especially those with 10 screws on bottom).
I've experience this not too long ago w/ vice city, I know for a fact that disc was clean then all of a sudden I noticed a circular scratch
luckily it was only vice city so if worst comes to worst, that's an inexpensive game to replace

I just bought a ps2 slim after watching this last week off a friend of mine who is 66. He bought it new in 2002 and used it maybe 2x. I got me basically a new unit for $60 :)....so far it plays black blue and silver discs no issues :D

The blue disks were CD games, thats why they only come out in the first couple of years of the PS2 life cycle, before every company started to use DVDs as the standard, and thats why the console has so many problems reading them, the laser reader was build for DVDs, not for CDs

apiz arsha-veen I still have my original PS2 (bulky black one), bought it new in 2002. And it still works after all this time, the door can stick at times, but mainly it needs a cleaning. And it is hard to to do because of how it is set up on the shelf. I have many systems hooked up to the same TV, close to 10 or so.
NES, SNES, Sega Master System, Sega Genesis, Panasonic 3DO, PS2, XBox 360.
On another TV I have the Coleco Vision, Atari 2600, and the Atari 400 computer.
As a film buff, the PS2 era was notable to me for how many surprisingly great licensed games came out on it. The Godfather, Scarface, The Thing, From Russia With Love (with Sean Connery back as Bond!), Simpsons Hit & Run, The Punisher, and a bunch of others I'm probably forgetting. Licensed/tie-in games have always had a negative reputation for being bad, but this was the one era where they shined.
Unfortunately, the licensing issues makes it tough for any of these games to get a modern re-release.

It's also a damn-sight quieter than the original 3xxxxx series; they even advertised it on the box! Runs a lot cooler too; I have a 300003 original UK launch model, and a 50003 (UK) - it's my 'goto' PS2..... And also a nice little silver 750003 slim model...though that one gets Very warm during use, and is a little less compatible with both PS2 and Ps1 games! Not a lot, but it could be deal-breaker depending on your game types.

Didn't the bigger ones have better fans bc my cousin has the original ps2 and I have the slim and his was always cooler than mine when we played his I use to bring my memory card over and spiderman friend or foe and he brought his memory card and Lego Batman.
You're confusing the Linux kit with the Other OS functionality for the PS3. The PS2 had a Linux kit but the linux capability was never taken away (the PS2's firmware isn't even updatable, it depends on the memory card for updates). On the PS3 you could install whatever PowerPC linux you wanted just via software, but then it was found exploitable and sony just removed it.

I feel the Xbox/PS2/GameCube era was a generation really worth jumping into. I do think the following generation ended up having better games overal/eventually, but the ps2 era was more exciting as it was the transition from niche to mainstream and during that gen the graphics improved immensely.
So I bought myself a PS2 that looks almost brand new for 35€ which included a memory card as well. Turns out, that original memory card was never opened and is still sealed and is worth 30€ on eBay. So I almost got a free PS2!

Two quick Fun Facts: The little logo on the front of the PS2, at least the fat model can be swiveled for whichever way you have your console horizontal or vertical. Also on the bootup menu for the PS2 the little silver bar tower looking things are representative of how many games you have played on the console and how far you got into them!
I'm pretty sure the orbs are how many game saves you have also. I can't believe they didn't know that the blue bottom disc were cd based ps2 games. I'm sure they know by now..

Yeah me too, I have spent thousands of hours on both of the consoles but I have to say I've never had any problems with fat one, which I cant say for the slim, after a year or so of using it, it started not to read discs like if they were damaged or something and fat one would play those same dvd's without problem, and after all those years it's still working like a charm.
I got my slim back in 2004 when I first got the console and it refused to read one of my copies of gta San Andreas, so I had to buy another copy. A year or so ago, I bought a fat really cheap in a pawn shop, and when I tried the broken copy of gta, it worked like a charm. I've also tested loads of filthy ones, literally brown with dust, for a charity shop and I have never seen one die. I guess I'm lucky.
100% the case, at least european models (dunno if there's any difference between american). I have had so many friends with a broken slim.
The closest I have ever came to my ps2's dying was that I had the slim that was recalled for exploding power bricks, and mine exploded back in 2007, console still worked though, but needed new cables! It melted to the carpet lol
I absolutely love the PlayStation 2. I have been collecting for years and years now my collection and total for all consoles is it just under 2,000 games. But my PS2 collection is just under 800 games. I think there's a round almost 3,000 games and total for the PS2. But, that's taking in consideration that there's Black Label, Greatest Hits, box sets, collector sets Etc. I still collect video games even though six months ago I went blind and visually impaired. I can no longer play video games however, is not stop me from collecting. So if I had any advice for somebody just starting out on PS2 collecting this is what I have to say. 1. Try not to spend more than $3 on a video game unless you know that it's a very rare game defined. 2. Do not be afraid to ask people if they have any old games or consoles laying around their house. Always offer to pay but chances are they will just give it to you anyway and that's me learning from experience. Also go to Goodwill's and thrift shops. 3. Get a app on your phone that allows you to make a library of all the games you collect. Because once you're collection gets over a few hundred games you're going to find yourself buying doubles and triples a lot. An app allows you to go through your library and see if you already own it. Android and Apple Store have free apps that are worth owning. 4. Try to buy Black Label Originals and greatest hits of the same titles. It makes your collection look even bigger and it's just good to own both. Sometimes the greatest hit versions had little surprises added. 5. Learn one word and love it. That word is barter. People who collect video games love to trade and chances are if you are collecting you're going to get big hits at times of a box full of games so you're going to come across doubles or triples and you will have plenty. 6. In my final piece of advice. When you start putting these games on the shelves at your house or in your apartment I recommend you buy sleeves to cover the cases. The reason for this is if you find a game that's completely mint and in perfect condition just drop it in a sleeve. You will not find yourself wondering if the game you have is meant or the game you just got is better condition wise you already know the one on your shelf is mint saves you a ton of time. Collecting video games is such a fun hobby so good luck and have fun. I almost forgot and because I'm visually impaired I'm adding it to the end and not editing I can't even read what I already wrote LOL. And my advice is whenever you go to a thrift shop or a Goodwill or Salvation Army Etc always, and I mean always look through the music CDs. I say this because I always find at least one or two PS1 games mixed in. And usually when you find a PS1 game it's always meant incomplete. Have fun collecting.

It's almost impossible nowadays to find games. And when you do find them everybody wants an arm and a leg form. It is kind of killed the fun for it for me. Went to a few yard sales and a flea market this year and got some good finds. Thank God for the wife. She catches the hidden gems for me.
However, my game room has evolved since the last 3 years. Turn into a video game/ movie theater. Nothing fancy. All low dollar stuff. However, my daughter and my son and his friends thinks it's awesome and that's enough for me to smile.
It's always good to know that someone's thinking about me. And yes I have found a few games I can play since my blindness. Most are on the Oculus VR headset. Like poker, VR, etc.

Regarding finding games, I live in Europe and must say that playstation 2 Pal games are still quite Common, you can buy them for 1 or 2 euro/dollar (the not so rare ones) I buy them on a weekly basis from internet or in second hand shops in order to get a decent amount of games to film my game room besides my Nokia N-gage, Atari ,Ps1, PSP, game boy game cube, Wii and DS collection.

Netherlands sounds like an amazing place every time I hear about it. One day I'd like to travel there or Ireland goes game hunting. I've heard there's a lot of good games to be found in those areas.
I have plenty of friends that have RP and all of them live happily with their affliction. I have one friend who recently lost all his vision after having RP for the last 25 years or so. But he amazes me because he still does everything he ever used to pretty much. He just adapted and found new ways to do everything.
Although, I'm hearing through the grapevine that there is a lot of new technology coming out to help people with RP. So you never know you will probably have that cure before you know it. I listen to a video about a man who had RP and had rod surgery and was able to see again. There's actually a video I think on RUclips where they're taking off the patches and he sees his daughters faces for the first time.
The future is upon us, luckily, for some of us there will be solutions sooner than later. I always keep my faith on high. Thanks for the fun chat and I hope you find a mega game find soon.

I disliked the original PS2 design when the slim came along. Now, it’s grown on me.
The fact that it resembles a computer tower is neat.
Also, that internal HDD that goes into the Expansion Bay can be used as a replacement for memory cards so if you have a big library, it’ll make it much more convenient.

Recently I'm starting off my PS2 collection with a fat model along with the first Ratchet and two Jak games. Also the first three DMC, Silent Hill 2, Final Fantasy X / X-2, .hack, RE Code Veronica, and Dirge of Cerberus
I have had my fat PS2 since two weeks from release. I have never had an issue with it. She still plays all my PS2 games fine. I added a network adaptor later and played socom online. I did not get a slim till 2017 at a yard sale for 5 bucks. I got it as a back up. Don't be down on plus size girls!

You have to be careful with ps2 slim as it's easy for the ribbon to get caught in a position where it creates circular scratches on discs you use which can cause them to be unplayable.

Yea there's different models of the slim. The launch slim and the later slims with redesigned internals. I have two of the later ones. They both work fine and have had both since like 2007 and I don't think they can overheat. There's also the latest ps2 slims with the built in power supply and updated modern design. I'm pretty sure those are reliable too.
The thing with ps2 slims is their disc readers are so shit.
Mr.Plankton Early slim models had lasers locked on max performance, which burned it quickly. Later 9000x models fixed this. I have made since 2008 and still working. Also, proper care and cleaning helps.
The PlayStation2 has to be, in my opinion, one of the best consoles in terms of performance, library, and reliability. I still love playing mine and I'm always on the lookout for more games.
One of my first PlayStation2 games that made me fall in love with the system was Gran Turismo 4. It was a great racing simulator with tons of cars, tracks, and difficult A.I. It even required you to obtain licenses for certain events, and if you didn't figure out how to drive correctly, you simply didn't win. It was a great game that, I think, deserves to be talked about with other PS2 classics, like Ratchet and Clank, RE4, DMC, etc.
Another, one that I think few people know about, is Freekstyle; an extreme motor-cross game with insane tracks and outrageous tricks. Think Moto Racer on steroids. It even had real motor-cross drivers and a really idiotic, yet hilarious, sense of humor. Worth looking into for anyone who likes over-the-top, bizarre racing games.
This is easily my favorite system and 'm not sure anything can change that.
Just a note, I've never had a problem of any kind with a fat model. In fact, it's probably the game system I've ever owned that I've never had a single issue with ever. I guess looking back, never had anything with the Gamecube either. Xbox got a sticky disc drive, Gameboy speakers dimmed, 360 overheated/red ringed. PS4 constantly has system fails.
The PS2 was the first console I ever owned, and for a long long long time it was the only console I ever owned. It never failed in any way. I must have sold it along the line for other stuff, because I hadn't played a PS2 in YEARS until recently. I'm a dealer, so I had a couple slims sitting around. Booted up GTA III, and I could only play maybe 5 minutes before it was white hot. It would shut off after another 10-20 minutes at the most. Same with the other, although this one would just get red hot and stay hot as long as you played the thing. I found an even more ancient Fat that was almost literally caked with dust on the inside, worked like it was out the box day one. I remember with the slims, if you bumped or moved it while it played, you ran serious risk of the game freezing. I remember once me and a friend were playing on a Fat, it got knocked off the table (oh the days of wired controllers) and fell a good 4-5 feet onto the concrete of the garage. Not a thing happened. We were in the middle of a game, so we just left it there while we finished before shutting it down and putting it back on the table.

Flawless Fatality yoooo Black was my favourite, so dark, depressing, even at some point scary. Also that "Paint It, Black" at the menu was sooooo good.
Yup, the only comparison I can make going from Twisted Metal 4 to Twisted Metal Black was Batman and Robin going to The Dark Knight trilogy. That game is toally psychotic and in my personal opinion, one of the games that pushed the M rating the most of any game ever. Probably one of the top 10 most fucked up games of all time.

3:10 I'm sure someone else has already mentioned this in the comments, but the blue bottom PS2 discs are CD roms (700mb), so they're just games that aren't very large from a data standpoint. The more common silver bottom PS2 discs are DVD roms (4.7gb), and of course as mentioned, the black bottom discs are only PS1 games are are CD roms (700mb) like the blue bottoms PS2 discs.
That would be a tough list to make. There are 100s of games that could make it. You definitely want some games with replay value. I like that you added shadow of the Collosus on there because if you beat the game, you have great replayability time wise. Love it. I must say it almost broke my heart destroying such beautiful things. It still is one of my fav gaming experiences. A true masterpiece.

I find it hard to take in that your video lacks so much info on the capabilities of the hard drive. Decent video, however, the PS2 phat got a bad rap from you guys. You really missed a lot of key points to the benefits of owning a PS2 Phat over a Slim model. Tragic really.
***** I would argue that the typical game collector who is new to the PS2 just needs to know that the HDDs are out there and it's something to look out for if interested. But for this video I didn't feel like there was a need to go into a ton of depth, especially when we already cover so much other stuff including the games. Thanks for the feedback.
MetalJesusRocks funny thing about HDD's is they are indeed easier to wear down because they take longer to load programs, increased weight and heat production over the SSD's which usually start up much faster (but do lack the ability to read discs so it is a trade off!)

Gaming collecting in Brazil is practically impossible, that white ps2 went for U$12.99 as i see in the back? That's unspeakable, around here, converting, it would be around U$100 and i'm being nice. Flea markets with games for a dollar? up to 20 even? Unheard of. Try 50 or higher. Even really popular games, even greatest hits versions, all goes for around that. There is no common games here if it's old it's rare, if it's old and well know it's rarer. Your game collection probably worth a million here. I swear to god.

There's really FOUR generations of PS2 hardware. The original fat which has a Firewire IEEE 1394 port on the front, the updated fat which dropped it and improved the laser and cooling (I believe), the first generation of slim, and the second generation of slim (that did away with the power brick). The model numbers are SCPH-300xx/500xx/700xx/900xx respectively.

Michael Estrada You can use a slim model but the console version can'st be higher than 9xxxx. A slim 75000 worked fine. :) You lack the ability to use hard drive but you can play via your LAN (load game backups from an SMB server on your PC). Loading times are great!
Michael Estrada It's possible if you use the ELF Version of Swapmagic... It's not worth paying for Swapmagic, but you will have to mod the way your PS2 Opens up and depending on if you have a Fat or Slim, you will need a Different tutorial.
IndraEMC I had my PS2 modded with modbo years ago. It was worth every penny.
One note about playing PS1 backwards compatibility on PS2: The PS2 used the PS1's CPU chip as its I/O processor, and this caused trouble with some games. Some games wont play at all and other are much slower on the PS2. I remember Final Fantasy IX's load times being unplayably slow.
