    Long text below//
I've recently become a new first time hedgehog momma, I never expected to become one, my little one was a surprise from someone really close to me(my mom's boyfriend). I've got the basics, toys, cage, potty area ect ect, we plan to buy his wheel soon tho!
I'm 16,I've grown up with dogs, cats, fish all those usual pets you know, now here comes this little fella and I got the jist of it quick enough, his feeding and his grooming(nails not yet, I'll likely take him to an exotic pets vet for trimmings when the time comes)
The lady who owned him before coupdnt properly take care of him,so,she didnt provide all the daily requirements ect for him, yet she gave me some tips and intructions but this lady scared me half to death and back, I got super anxious since she made it sound like accidentally giving him one worm too many would make him drop dead right there,so she already made me all the more nervous to work with this little guy.
But I've had him...almost a week now, I've done quite a bit of research to find out do's and donts, which helped me through his first bath which, was highly succesfull actually! It was the first time I got to actually hold him in my hands to place him in the tub and take him out, I opened up to him more that day. I was scared to death of picking him up and accidentally dropping him or hurting him, its getting better day by day, I don't expect the relationship to be top tier in one week, I know it takes time and I'm willing to sit and take it day by day with him, after all its new to the both of us,and he's still young,my boy is only 6 months old, I'm not sure if it counts for something or not!
Anyhow, I wanna figure out how to bond with him more, I jnow hedgehogs are naturally grumpy little guys but I wanna show him I care and I wanna get him to relax a bit more towards me, last night I was able to pick him up again, but tonight he was really not co-operstive, perhaps because I woke him up so he was more grumpy but I'm trying to for a start get at least 30 minutes of pure bonding time with him,I cant find much online or anything that really help me without getting too fast for me, I wanna take baby steps with him, for both of us. I wanna know what I can do to help him grow a bit more comfortable or,something. Again I cant find much on the affection side that seem to stand out with me, not much for me as a complete newbie mom anyhow-
I have a few questions, honestly tips and advice in general would be fantastic too on what I could do. I don't want to rush him, nor myself. Sometimes during out bonding too, well, its not that uncommon for me, he goes to sleep, and tonight I had him in his blanket on my lap,and he fell asleep,I remained dead still not to bother him,now I was curious..just leaving him so he sleeps like that, would it help? In a bonding sense, in a sense of having him get used to me...
I really wanna do this right,I'm determined to. But I can't unless I don't really know what works or what doesn't.
If anyone has any advice or tips,(or answers to my question-) I would appreciate them! Thank you
UPDATE: I think we're improving,he doesnt puff much anymore and he uncurls himself a lot faster when I have bonding time with him!

thats a sure good way to get arrested in africa for poaching, its not advisable to approach any of our wild animals, some species might get you shot under the right circumstances, like rhino or pangolin, poaching here is a serious problem , and a lot of times the rangers can be trigger happy, but the circumstances they operate in is a heavy burden to carry to save the animals

For the maker of this video: Make a choice what hedgehog you are preferring to because European hedgehogs and African hedgehogs are very different!! The only things that they have in common is: ● that they are nocturnal, meaning that you have to let them sleep at daytime. Never disturb them, it causes stress. ● They are lactose intollerant, meaning NO milk. ●They are travellers, they need to be able to run ● And they need a heathpad to sleep on a nice warm bed. ● They need chinchilla sand to 'wash' themselves in. ● They aren't rodents. They have teeth like dogs or cats and they can bite. ● Never clean their cage just once a week. Clean it every day!! Hedgehogs are dirty animals and will poop where they go. ● and last but not least, wash your hands after handling them!!
    For African pygmy hedgehogs:
●DISCLAIMER: African hedgehogs are overbreeded animals. They are prone to cancer, WHS and they can carry salmonella. Also they're tropical animals and if you keep them as pets, they are probaply not in Africa. We have different diseases their body isn't uses to. Use a glass terrarium. It keeps the warmth in and avoids cold air coming in. They are tropical and need the warmt ● They DON'T go into hibernation!! If your hedgehog is cold, warm it up with your body heath cause they WILL die. ● Also their tongue van get stuck when they drink from a bottle (counts for every animal). ● Cat kibbles ate the most healthy food. Never feed them canned food or 'hedgehog' food because that is based on european hedgehogs and their nutrition is different. It's best to soak it in water cause their teeth are very tiny and easy to break. ● Only feed them about 3 mealworms a week. Mealworms are very nutritious and can cause osteoperosis when given too much! ● Use fleece blankets for groundcovering. Their feet are too tiny and too round for woodchips or gravel resulting in pain, not wanting to run and even wounds. ● Maximum amount of washing them is once in 2 weeks! They are African so they are used to dry environments. ● add a big wheel to run in. They need to get their energy flowing cause they are awake the whole year! ● And if you notice something about your hedgehog, never hesitate and go to the vet!
    Now for European hedgehogs:
    ● You shouldn't keep them in a cage. They aren't pets at all. But if you see one during winter, or summer on daytime, ALWAYS check if they are healthy (skinny, dehidrated, slow). If they are unhealthy, take them to the sanctuary or the vet. If you cannot do that fast, take them in, give them a short, warm bath with just water, no soap, to remove the fleas. You don't want fleas in your house.
For housing: ● Use a glass terrarium as well as their feet are way bigger and they can climb. ●They go into hibernation during winter but make sure their terrarium is also nice and warm. Never wake them up! ● These hedgehog eat a variation of bugs, but feed them cat kibbles as well for nutrition. ● it's also best to use fleece as ground covering for their bed but these hedgehogs have actual toes and they can dig. Add some leaves, sand or soil for a rich environment. ● And last but not least, don't domesticate them. They need to be back in the wild after hibernation with a full stomach to mate as the hedgehog populstion around the globe isn't so fancy. Though its best to just bring it to the vet or sanctuary whenever you can cause wild animals bring parasytes, also inside of their body like worms. They need to be treated for it.
If you have questions, you can always ask me.

I wrote a whole text but I accidently deleted it😭 It could be that he is looking for shelter for hibernation. You can check his weight (healthy is between 800 and 1200 gr). and because it is the time that hedgehogs go into hibernation, they should weigh a bit more. Be careful cause wild animals can carry fleas and parasytes in case you have pets. Best thing to do is feed him some dry cat kibbles, some water and take him to a vet that is experienced with hedgehogs or a wildlife sanctuary. They can test him on worms and other diseases and treat it immediately cause they have equipment and meds that we do not have. and if you cannot go to the vet in the upcoming days for example, then you can take him in for a safe space to sleep. You can always place a hedgehog house from wood (not from reed because it can cause mold on the hedgehog) in your garden with some straw or shredded newspaper so hedgehogs feel welcome and find a safe spot to sleep😊let me know how it is going!😄
