- This time in The Room of Rock we take a closer look at the Epiphone SG400 we bought for the headstock modification project we did. The guitar that was only bought as a test piece turns out to be a rather nice guitar. Have a look and see what you think

What do you think, is this guitar capable of more than just Rock?
@@airdog1829 thank you, I think the disparity between the body and neck is too much for changing to lighter tuners to over come. My Vintage V130 is the same and that has vintage style 3 on a plate tuners on it. The amp is my Marshall JCM 900 1x12 Hi Gain Dual Reverb
@@airdog1829 that is an ingenious idea
The best review I’ve seen of this guitar. Well explained and demonstrated.
that is really appreciated, thank you
Hi, just wanted to thank you for such an informative & sensible review. RUclips can be such a waste of time sometimes but every now & again you stumble across something really worth watching. Thanks again - all the best 👍
Thank you, I try and be balanced when I talk about something. Glad you found it helpful
I watched your review before I bought one, mine has almost now use since it was new. Thanks it is a great guitar. Your review sold me on it.
I think it is a great guitar mine get lots of use and is far more versatile than it gets credit for. I am glad you liked the review
Brilliant review..got one.thank you
I really enjoyed listening to you play, I'm thinking of buying that guitar and you convinced me, thanks for the video
If you like the SG style of guitar I don't think you will be disappointed, good luck with your purchase
I have this guitar, it's awesome!
All your advices and comments are good. I‘ve got same model last week, a second hand 2007 SG-400. Good business indeed! Top and light guitar to alternate with LP model.
I think they are a great guitar for the money and I really like mine.
mannn thank u so much for this video, great review and great playing, i was about to buy the g400 pro model, but i think this is gonna be also great too
thank you Ale, I am still really enjoying playing this guitar. Glad you found it helpful.
Good advice on the input jack.
I’m so glad a bought this guitar 🎸
They are great for the money and I am sure you will enjoy it for years to come.
Great sound! i have the same guitar. Nice review man.
Love the Epiphones I play them because of their exceptional quality and legendary history and history with Les Paul
I think they are hard to beat on the value for money and pedigree states.
cheers man you`ve made my mind up to buy an sg 400 , great tones no bullshit!!
Great guitar, I love it. Also great value for money for the quality you get.
A very pleasant guitar, I like the metal plate idea!
thank you Chris, as I mentioned, I have see it done on some Les Pauls
Learning the guitar during lockdown and this was the best used guitar I could find locally under £200. I was worried it was a one trick pony and it would only be good for rock and metal but although I'm still learning I'm finding it suits all styles of music really well.
I was surprised how versatile they are as well, enjoy
my step father just gave me this one today omg it plays nice and easy
Believe it or not, three weeks ago I picked up a FREE 2006 Epi SG 400 guitar (my first SG) with a cracked neck, a very used body, and no hardware/wiring at all except for the bridge assembly. $160 (parts/tools) later I now have a rock-solid rock machine that plays like a dream, aside from just a hair of very manageable neck dive. I'm SO glad you talked about the volume difference between the two pickups. I was wondering if my new Epi Probucker bridge pickup was somehow defective, with the noticeably reduced volume as compared to the neck pickup. So it's not just my ears. Cool review. Thanks.
I am glad you found it helpful. They are great guitars in my opinion, enjoy yours. They are always a bit better when we have had to put a bit of work into them yourself.
Best review⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Best demo ever
I hope you found it useful.
My very first guitar was a 1971 Japanese 'lawsuit' SG cherry with vibrola. I taught myself to play it by listening to Hendrix, Zeppelin, Sabbath etc, it was my first love 😉 My second guitar was a 1975 Gibson Flying V, needless to say these 2 will always be my most favorite guitars. Whenever I see one I want to buy it 😂 too bad I'm skint af after my post-Covid guitar and gear buying spree. But I am gonna try and find an SG 400, I don't think it's that expensive and I really like it.
Good review...got one yesterday!...it has Gibson deluxe tuners that the previous owner has fitted... although I prefer Grover's the new ones look cool in my opinion...it's a great guitar which to my surprise does clean tones very well 😊
I am glad you like it, still loving mine
iw watch you and buy my son this guitar ,thanks .kind regards from croatia
It is a great guitar he will love it
Nice demo , I bought the same Sg , not really into it yet. My strat is my go to.....BTW, you got into a little Santana vibe at near the end of your vid and made me think how versatile this axe is....I’m not a shredder more bluesey kind of player...
Hi Jack, I bought this really as a practice piece for the headstock conversion. I didn't think it would be my thing but is actually a really great versatile guitar for the money. I love the neck pick up sustain both clean and dirty. Enjoy yours.
Sir, enjoyed your review and playing. If I may ask, what amp are you playing through?
Thank you, the amp is a Marshall JCM900 Hi gain dual reverb 100 watt 1 x 12. There is a picture of it in the latest video I have done.
Good review and some useful tips. Not sure about the weight, my SG G400 Pro is 7lb 3oz; still a nice light guitar. I think it's a great guitar for the price, especially used prices. As you say, a right angle plug/adapter is wise. Never thought about the susceptibility of the jack above the cavity; that plate mod is clever for a gigging musician (could also add some lead in there to reduce neck dive 😉).
Thank you, I am glad you liked the video. When I bought mine the previous owner warned me a bout the neck dive and I always play it with a strap on even seated. Whilst not curing it, it does help you catch the neck if suddenly wants to take a dive. Weight wise they will vary guitar to guitar but as you say they are a very light guitar and you could play all night without noticing it is there.
Have you raised the bridge pup? Like your vids mate.🇬🇧
Thank you. To be honest the bridge pick up is where it was when I got the guitar I normally fret the string high up the neck and make sure the pick up heights are roughly running parallel with the stings and not too high that they could choke the strings
I wish you would come back to RUclips
I do intend to in the near future
Your model looks like one produced between 2004 & 2009 but the headstock is different. Did you say that you changed the shape of the Headstock which would have been the 'clipped ear' type originally?
nice playing i enjoyed it, is there any tabs for the jam with the backing track at around 27mins? i'd like to learn that thanks
Thank you,.Sorry I don't have any tabs, I was just improvising
Hi. Nice vid. Is this guitar good for concerts and recording? Is it for basic, intermediate or advanced guitarists? Thanks a lot.
Hi, I feel this guitar is good enough for anything you want to do with it both beginner and advanced player. I would happily gig it and have recorded numerous things on this channel with it. The only it might benefit from is a pick up upgrade but it sounds great straight out of the box.
Nice. How the neck feels? Do you think it suits to players with smaller hands?
Whilst the neck isn't as skinny as some of the Squire necks, I think smaller hands would be fine. I would always recommend you try one out in a shop first to see if you like the feel.
I apologize for my ignorance but I have wanted to play electric guitar for a long time and I found an Epiphone SG deluxe faded blue. They sent me a demo video but my question is if you can get the Bridge dirty with this guitar or do you need to buy something?
Hi, do you mean get a dirty (distorted) sound out of the bridge pick up? If so the answer is yes, but you either need an overdrive channel on the amplifier or a distortion peddle to do this.
Great video, is this sg 400 the same as the sg standard??
I think the Standard has the bigger scratch plate and a bound edge board, so a different model
Nice review, thanks! I am agree what neck pickup sounds a little poor. May be seymour jazz will be better or p-90 on neck?
Interesting ideas
I am thinking in buying this guitar, but I don't find now in my country, were you think I can buy it? Im from chile (sorry for the bad english)
Hi Fabian, your English is very good. I am sorry but I don't know where you would find Epiphone Guitars in Chile, I would try searching the internet and see if there are any distributors locally to you. Good luck.
I hav a 400 pro and the control cavity is a nightmare, full of wires ,plugs n such . Coil split not tht good to me . So it had to go . New pups , pots ,, no plugs at all . Been playin traditional country to ledzep it does fiine . Weight on this is 7lbs . May try n do the metal plate , thk bout tht a min . Good review thks .
you are welcome, certainly recommend right angle jack plugs to help prevent any damage to the guitar output socket.
Bring out the dancing girls ..and put me champagne on ice...im going in ....to .........
Isn't this the newer Standard version? It has the "new" open book headstock.
No it is an old guitar, but I modified the headstock to make it look more Gibson. There is a set of videos on that on the channel.
Hi. I cant choose this guitar g400 pro or squire affinity strat hh or hss. Can you help me please? Thanks for the video.
They are both great guitars and you won't disappointed with either. I have to say, I think the Strat is one of the most versatile guitars ever made, whatever music you want to play. Which ever you choose it will be great fun to play.
what guitar did you go for?
The SG is such a basic guitar much like the telecaster that even the knockoffs are probably not far off from the originals. A good setup and some modding and you're good to go.
I have to admit I was surprised how much I have come to love this and use it. It is a great guitar
Is epiphone now using gibson headstock ? Those ends use to be cut off, and yours doesn't, or are my eyes fooling me ?
There is take that Epiphone will be switch t0 the Gibson style headstock but I converted this one myself, there is a series of videos on the conversions
It's actually not real mahogany.
The Epiphone G-400 is made of Philippine/Indonesian mahogany (more commonly known as Luan, Lauan or Meranti, botanic genus Shorea which has 196 subspecies), which is not actually related to the mahogany species. In 2005, Epiphone began putting thin veneers of African mahogany on the front and back of the Cherry finished G-400s.
G-400 "Vintage" worn cherry / worn brown models manuifactured in Korea from 2002 to 2005 (UnSung and SaeIn plants, serial numbers starting with U or I) have solid three-piece bodies made from Nyatoh (palaquium spp.) without a veneer.
The Epiphone SGs sound as good as the Gibbys, i have both and they are indeed equals
I don't have a Gibson to compare to but I thought the Gibson's had a slightly brighter sound but then I am sure it depends on the type of pick ups fitted to the Gibson. Interesting as you have both to compare to.
@@theroomofrock6456 Yeah dude, for the price you can't go wrong with a good Epi SG, some of the Les Paul's are decent as well.
hello ted
Ted says Hi
Why the head look like à Gibson head ?
I converted the headstock myself to a Gibson style headstock. The videos of me doing it are on my channel if you are interested.
What's happening I fell a sleep
Can you do mine?
I assume you mean the headstock conversion, I am glad you like it I think it does make the guitar look nicer in my opinion.
slightly out of tune on your demo section on the B string.
ooops!
