This is what fighting games on genesis should have been. The tone and setting was dark. Each character was killed before they were able to change the history of the world for the better and the eternal champion has summoned them all to his realm but he can only send 1 back to before they were killed and they must each fight for that chance to make the world a better place.
I remember reading back in the day that the difficulty was adaptive. You cannot select the difficulty, rather the game adapts to your skill level. That said, the difficulty comes most of all from the final boss, the Eternal Champion, since you have to defeat his four forms on a single bar of health (with some replenishments with each victory over one of those forms). He's cheap and, if I recall rightly, losing to him is game over. So you got one chance.
I had a friend who owned this game growing up (I never had a Genesis)... I was blown away with how great it was! It was like Street Fighter 2 but personally I think the characters, backgrounds and music were even better and more varied than SF2. And it had fatalities a la Mortal Kombat. It's a true hidden gem of the fighting game genre and still holds up today!
Underrated fighting game on the Genesis. I used to rent this one all the time, and I only got a few of the stage "fatalities." Usually the burning at the stake was easiest to manipulate. The fishman with the trident figure was my guy. Good action, good themes, good fun. I'd still call Street Fighter 2 Special Champion's Edition the best fighting game on this console, but this one is actually more fun that Mortal Kombat II in my opinion. Check it out for sure. Lots of great details in these characters.
@@dariog36th Two songs actually: Eternal from E.1999 Eternal and the lesser known, original version of Crossroads. People made some good mixes where they blended the EC songs with the Bone songs. I always liked this game. Definitely had a unique vibe to it that differentiated it from all the other fighters. Weird thing is that I found it much easier to play than Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat.
I do love this game for it’s unique story, it’s interesting characters, and the fact that you can practice your special moves in practice mode. And I also love the backstories for each character. What I don’t like about the Genesis version is that it’s fucking brutal! Seriously, the characters in this game don’t just beat you senseless, this game punishes you silly!
I still have this game after about 19 years that's crazy but i genuinely enjoy this game. it's definitely a collector's item for any true fighting game collector out there.
This game was so much about the awesome characters, I remember them well to this day. The "Sonic the Comic" publication had these amazing stories about them too!
If there's a game you should definitely try on Genesis - even if just for the awesome music - it's Alisia Dragoon. Very good Action game, but greatest musical score on the genesis.
I loved this game. The Sega CD version is full of cool hidden stuff. Thought the animals were kinda dumb but otherwise a great game I'd love to see come back. They had planned a 3rd game for the Saturn but someone at Sega looked at Vitua Fighter and argued why do we have two fighting games. Seeing the that as the future. Sucks we never got to see another game. Wonder how much of it was made? I think it was on the back of the Saturn box on release as coming soon.
Hey man! Long time lurker, first time commenter! I love your channel to bits! My sega collection is currently really small, so I even enjoyed this video. Defo. gave us a good game to look out for! - Stivad
When this came out, they directly called out Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter in the ad campaign. Like they'd show a picture of one of their characters and the text would say something like "Blanka wouldn't stand a chance."
Man, (if you couldn't guess) I was a huge fan in the long, long ago, but while EC CD was genuinely great, the OG EC was simply different. Eternal Champions had great tech, big, detailed characters and animations, Great sound effects and voices, and tight controls. It also had NO manual combo system and was insanely difficult with computer players that didn't share your limited usage of special moves. Most of the music was garbage, too. While the characters were nicely varied in move sets, the balance was broken. Trident was waaaaay more powerful than any of the other characters, and some characters specials were so laughably slow as to be completely useless.
True, the computer not having limits to the special attacks broke the game's point of having a limiter for them. There were also some specials who were useless agains the computer, like Xavier's spell that messed the controls or the one that transformed the opponent into another. Those attacks were only useful against human opponents.
The Genesis version is not a bad game, but SF II has much better graphics and animations. I dunno way but Eternal Champions characters just look wierd and cheap. The Sega CD version however improves in every aspect: better music, more characters, and a lot more speed and frames of animation for each character. That game is a serious contender for the more well-known fighting games, probably only didn't get the pop culture status of others due to being a Sega CD exclusive.
The bad news about the game is that it just wasn't that good (not horrendous, just lackluster in some ways). The specials were hard to input and generally useless; the timer was too fast and the rounds ended before anyone was KO'd. However, the good thing about the game was that the art style was absolutely gorgeous and the soundtrack to this day is still one of the best I've ever heard. A special note is that the storyline especially for a fighter was engaging. It's definitely worth a play. I recommend the Sega Mega Drive and Genesis Collection on Steam which includes many of the Sega Genesis' classics, with Eternal Champions among them. I'd love one day for them to bring this game back in the same way they did for other great fighters like Killer Instinct.
I grew as a Nintendo kid and I wouldn't change that fact about me, but I recall looking at the advertisments of this game in the WWF magazine back then and wondering why WHY I couldn't play that cool looking game on my SNES.
I have the Sega CD game and while I haven’t played it in years I distinctly remember playing through to get a whole BUNCH of hidden playable characters... including the chicken from one of the backgrounds. Now how cool is that?
It doesn't do well on the Wii Virtual Console because the button-setting options don't make it any less awkward. You can only assign punches to L, X, and R, and you can only assign kicks to Y, B, and A. I don't know why SEGA made the configuration options so limited, but it really hampers usage with a Classic or GameCube controller. Unfortunately, there are no button-mapping options for Virtual Console itself, which is part of the reason I didn't buy as many games for it, the two being lack of virtual controller accessories (like the Controller and Rumble Paks) and the ass-backward payment structure of the Wii Shop Channel.
Was expecting some critical analysis on the fighting engine. I know it's not fair to compare it to killer instinct, but a deconstructional review would have been nice, as I have never been able to digest or get in to this game. It's maybe too late for me to appreciate the intrincacies so I am always looking around to see more comments on the system. Guess I'll have to look somewhere else on this one. Great videos as always!
Yeah if you're looking for detailed breakdowns, you're not going to find them on this channel, sorry. This is more of a "Here's what this game is" kind of a thing
I’m just gonna post to get in this game was so ahead of its time. There’s a new rebalancing patch that just came out if only the animations were a little bit better.
my bday gift. This game is gorgeous! But a bit slow compared to SF. Sound effects are solid and the music is great. But play it versus only, because the 'arcade' mode sucks hard, and the final boss is cheesy and tiresome. Worth noting it was hard to find opponents unless you had double 6 btn controls
I loved the crap out of Eternal Champions back in the day. It had big character sprites, nice animation, tight controls and heavier impact sound effects than even street fighter, but there are no combo-able stun frames and the music is terrible. After these 2 things were fixed in the sequel, it was harder to love the OG game.
A lot of people hated the Sega CD I for one work my ass off and bought one and rounded up some decent games am I the only one that beat Scottie pippen slam City? I had this game too and beat it it was amazing
Eternal champions needs a remake.it has amazing music The sounds definitely suck but it's such a cool looking game I've never seen another game that looks like it. The CD version was cool too but it needs a modern remake that's true to the original
The place also buys games trades they also host tournaments. Lately on weekends they've been having Super Smash Brother tournaments. I just picked up from the store Super Smash Brothers for the n64 with box.
The one I go to never does sports game competitions. They have done tournaments actually for Pokemon. They've done with X and Y and did a retro one with Pokemon Stadium 2.
I really wanted to like that game, but i personally did not find the controls or the moves responsive, and the character animations were rubbish. I just wasn’t tired of street fighter enough to get into this. Also the power meter and the countdown numbers are way too bland, when everything else about the game is aesthetically way intricately designed it looks like something left in from the prototype phase.
This video has been up for 3 years and I can't believe no one has mentioned the weird motion controller ring you put on the floor and stood in that was marketed with this game...
Terrible game. I remember my disappointment as a teen when I first tried it. I really like the art and the characters, but the controls are awful and the game feels so slow.
The Sega CD sequel was way better. Some of those overkills were brutal!

The music was so good Bone Thugs n Harmony sampled tracks from the game
Really? Which one?
Yup
@@dariog36th Eternal
It's the best fighting game soundtrack bar none

This actually looks great. Awesome video and thanks for suggesting me a new cart to pick up!
+Anthony Garcia Thanks Anthony
Eternal Champions really takes advantage of the Genesis color palette. I think it's a beautiful game
The Sega Cd version of this game (Challenge from the Darkside) increases the blood and gore in the "Finishers." It's more intense than Mortal Kombat.
This should have been revisited. In updated entry with smoother special moves inputs would be really interesting
My first genesis game. I always sucked at it but it was all i had for a few monthes. Ill always remember that x mas morning.
I used to love the bios on the characters
You should review Samurai Shodown or Weapon Lord; underrated asf.
I was watching gameplay on the new samurai showdown. It looks REALLY good.

Classic Sega ad campaign from the 90's

Sounds like Art of Fighting.

Yeah this game was mediocre at best but I'm pretty sure everyone is programmed to compare every fighting game to SF2 or MK
The bad news about the game is that it just wasn't that good (not horrendous, just lackluster in some ways). The difficulty level of this game was frustrating but still a Classic.
Such a varied cast with four characters I really really liked which seams super rare for these types of games for me :(
I was OBSESSED with this game as a kid

There are playthroughs on RUclips with people running through the game with all those hidden characters, including the chicken and the dog.
Dude I thought you would tear this game apart. But you totally blew me away with your insight

The hardest fighting game I ever played.
I remember being very disappointed when I first found out this game had zero connection with Michael Moorcock.
SeafoamSmiles
Who's Michael Moorcock? Sounds like a porno star name.
This game was pretty good - I rented this a few times - good rental
it looks unique, but it has a jerky feel and awkward mechanics...and the music was kinda weird
2 dope songs were made from this soundtrack. This ost is great. The gameplay is terrible but most fighters not made by capcom or nrs are bad.
I have it emulated on Xbox one and actually playing it right now 👍 by the way I got a killer modded Xbox for sale with over 40,000 games 👌🐸
Amazing game. I got it on Steam.
It's 3 bucks on Steam but I got it on sale for $1.24. EPIC game.
