    I've had a 16A for few years and love it, I didn't need built in preamps just the conversion. Bought an 8A to use for a small mobile rig too. Earlier this year bought a 24AO to give me a full 16 outputs for a summing mixer since 1 & 2 are the speaker outs. Really great system, flexible and sounds excellent, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

    Dope! Didn't know you were a Motu guy. I was just searching the Gearslutz forms researching a new interface and keep hearing about Motus latest interfaces as I was looking for something with top notch converters and low latency. I just ordered the 828ES that seemed like the best bang for the buck rather than an old Lynx Auroa converter. Lots of i/Os for my external mic pre amps and uses the same DAC chip found in the Apogee Symphony. Money well spent.

    I had a Motu 828 MkII.. Watching this brought back great memories.....
    Now apogee... But AVB is a Winner... As much as I might go UAD next up... The whole DSP thing doesn't really interest me...
    DSP with Protools on D24 > then mix cards definitely whipped native plugs.. but thats a long time ago...
    Low latency when Tracking on a HDX Rig running plugs.... .. No doubt an advantage.... But..
    I really believe in this day and age, How far code and cpu's have come, It can be argued , theres amazing plugs without the requirement of DSP based effects....
    So , I digress...
    The reason im doing a rant is because the value of this motu, and its features, gives me more value ..
    Yep..
    Thinking Ill be going back to Motu.

  • @exhumus
    @exhumus 4 года назад +2

    Glad you reuploaded here because I never knew about the backup channel! Question: If you're setting up your analog mixing chains using the matrix router or Pro Tools inserts rather than your analog patch bay aren't you adding a DA/AD step and associated DSP latency each time? Any disadvantage to this as you've been using it?

    • @soundshigh
      @soundshigh 4 года назад +1

      I wanted to ask the same question. I have come across other people who work like that - using hardware units as plugins, each unit doing a DA/AD loop - and claiming they don't recognize any perceivable degradation. And there's Andrew Scheps who claims even one DA/AD is too much when mixing.

    • @mixbustv
      @mixbustv  4 года назад +2

      Glad I did then! Well it's very different if you're using the MOTU matrix or pro tools inserts: with PT inserts you need to open 2 and in that case there would be an additional adda conversion (how detrimental that would actually be would need to be discussed anyway cause it might be negligible but, not the point); using the matrix you avoid exactly that because of the AVB system, you can route any signal to anything and even mult it without any additional adda round trip. You just need to make sure (with pro tools) you exit the daw and go back in the same I/O, what happens in the middle, stays in the matrix

    • @exhumus
      @exhumus 4 года назад +1

      @@mixbustv Thanks for the reply! I though that AVB routing occurred in the digital domain (packets of samples) and therefore there'd be conversion every time it left out returned an interface on the network. I'd really like to be wrong though... Or just have the latency and conversion of these devices be so good that it doesn't matter. The system seems so flexible and I'm overdue for an upgrade.

    • @mixbustv
      @mixbustv  4 года назад +1

      @@exhumus it actually stays in the analog domain (if you go from one out to an in and so on, just like you would with a bay :) but the concept is the same, no additional conversion, and remember you can route between interfaces too

      Interfaces are all-in-one solutions, if you're not mixing professionally, today the quality of them is more than enough. Usually, what you need with an interface is basically x amount of preamps for recording, ADDA conversion and a more or less comprehensive monitoring section. With a dedicated ADDA, you will need all the other things separately, preamps, and monitor controller. if you don't record but mix only, then you don't need preamps, or maybe one or two only

      @@mixbustv I have the Orion 32HD....never had any issues with the drivers. All the Antelope interfaces use the same driver. One thing that people do wrong and they have issues with the drivers is that they connect it to whatever USB port on their computer. I discovered that if you connect it to a USB port straight on the motherboard, not on a hub and you allow it to have it's own PCIe lane, you will never have any issues with the drivers. So this thing with Antelope drivers issues is a hoax. As far as routing....Antelope's matrix is just amazing. Converters quality...mastering grade, I switched from UA Apollo and I can't be happier. Plus now I have 32 ins, 32 outs, beat that...lol. Before I switched to Antelope I checked so many other interfaces...Merging Technologies HAPI-to expensive per channel count, but sounds amazing, Lynx Aurora N-very nice sounding, but lower dynamic range, Apogee Symphony MKII-good sound, not on my taste. As soon as I heard the Antelope Orion 32HD, I was that's it, this is it, right on the spot. I'm not saying MOTU is inferior or something, but you should really try some Antelope Audio converters. Cheers!

    Hi, I have a question. I see you replaced the patchbay, so lets say we want to Daysi chain hardware. If we do it directly in protools as inserts wouldn't that mean that on every insert there would be a DA/AD conversion? Wouldn't keeping the patchbay make more sense as we can daysi chain several devices after the DA conversion and do the AD conversion at the very end of the chain thus avoiding in and out of protools after every insert?

    Great video, but won't you want your instruments/vocals to hit your outboard preamp and compressors before hitting the MOTO gain stage and digital converters? The way your hooking it up with get the Preamp sound of the MOTO before going to your outboard gear.

    • @mixbustv
      @mixbustv  3 года назад +1

      The way I hook it up is the ONLY way to hook it up and no, you don't get anything from the MOTU because it has line level input, the 16A doesn't even have preamps at all and the 8pre has combo jack so it recognizes the line level input because you're inserting a 1/4" jack and not a mic cable. I'm not sure how you think the signal path is but it's pretty simple,
      recording: mic, (external) pre, interface, DAW. Simple AD conversion
      Mixing and mastering DAW, DA, outboard, AD, DAW.
      That's it there's no other way

      Not sure what you're asking here, if you're recording, you set the gain yourself in the first place, the only reason why you'd need to use the trim in recording would be because you have a too hot of an input, in which case you'd use a pad or just turn the gain down.
      The trim for the most part are there to level match channels, for example I use outboard, sometimes one channel can be 1db off and you rebalance, or a unit drops the input by 1 or 2db so you use those for precise A/B with/without the hardware but, in any case, yes you can.
