Hi everyone - join us Friday morning Sep 25 @ 12AM to listen to the full album from Sufjan, together. CD/2xLP/Tape comes out October 2 - pre-order it at your local record store or wherever you buy records.
Im so happy. I've never heard an artist like Sufjan before, he's so unique, one of the greatest of our time in my opinion. This album is so diverse and complex. I find it so liberating. It makes me feel high, gives me chills but is also comforting at the same time. It makes me want to cry and dance but also gives me so much peace. I just want to say thank you Sufjan. You are my favourite artist and your music means so much to me. Its helped me in ways I cannot explain and I sincerely wish to meet you one day and see you perform live. It would be magical. Thanks for blessing us with this gift. Im going to enjoy it everyday for the rest of my life. Much love, - F
The most enigmatic band I have heard is cloud cult..their son stopped breathing when he was two and he died..His name was kaiden and Craig the lead singer his dad made so many songs about his dispair but in light of what happened their are alot of positive songs..breaks my heart check them out.
it's not a case of my rajneesh being worse than any song on the album (in fact I'm pretty sure it is/will be better than any of them) it just didn't fit in with the other songs thematically, lyrically and to a lesser extent sonically
talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before, unafraid to reference or not reference, put it in a blender, shit on it, vomit on it, eat it, give birth to it
Actually in the Book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon tells us among many other bits of wisdom, there is nothing new under the sun. That and the fact that vanity is like grasping for the wind...
The 3 days before Ascension Day are called Rogation Days in Western Christianity which comes from the Latin verb rogare, meaning "to ask", which reflects the beseeching of God for the appeasement of his anger and for protection from calamities. Very fitting.
I don't think this was like The Age of Adz. Sure, it was electronic but Adz was a whole different level of madness. All I can say is that The Ascension is safer, in some sorts. Not necessarily worse or better, but safer. I like both albums though.
Can we talk about how Ativan beautifully this represents severe symptoms of anxiety? That transition from 4:07 with utter noise and chaos (with the heart beat throbbing painfully underneath) into 5:10, when the violin kicks in (representing the person taking Ativan), the noise dies away, as does the heart beat, and the song floats in cooling relief. My own heart throbbed for those who suffer from severe anxiety and similar cases. A beautiful and painfully real summary.
I always thought that the beats in the end of the music reminds a heartbeat. So interesting when they give way to strings, as if the medicine had taken effect.
Goodbye to all that is my fav track on the album. The music is just joyous. The vocals. The backing vocals. Top down. Cruising the universe on the way to God. It makes me so so happy. I'm new to the Sufjan catalog. I have only heard Illinois and this one so far. I'm working through slowly enough to get a solid feel and really savor each one. May I say? The Ascension has eclipsed Illinois for me. The spiritual themes and the futuristic sounds paired together are just perfection. He's evoking church organy melodies with rave beats and it works. The wrestling of the sacred and the profane. The pleading of Gilgamesh. The wisdom of the Ascension. The panic of Ativan. This is all about the human experience and I'm so in love with it. So anyway Sufjan your music has stirred me so much. I always loved music and I always loved God but my passion for both are new since hearing your stuff. Thank you.
A friend of mine recommended this album, calling it a religious experience. Considering he's an atheist, that caught my attention. I have to say I agree with him. Such an incredibly lush, intricate album. Transcendent.
not to be corny but this is the only thing im looking forward to these past few months. this next week is gonna be super hectic for me and i can only think of when all the hassle has slowed down and im listening to this album by the end of next week
Didnt really vibe the last projects that Sufjan made. Always listened to it, but it never really clicked with me. But this one clicked. Love a lot of songs from this.
Same. I _loved_ Carrie & Lowell as well as Illinois, but his most recent stuff really wasn't my cup of tea. But this? I love this. This I will be playing on repeat, just like what I did with those two albums.
I'm 100% with you. I like that he experiments, but I pretended that the most of the other albums didn't happen and listened to the old ones. Thank you Corona for bringing back Sufjan's ghost of greatness past.
Sufjan weaves his magic in dark times. Cannot stop playing this magical work. Die Happy, Tell me you love me, Run away with me, America and on. A unique force.
i think you might be at least partly right -- idk if people will look back on it as like a lost gem later, but i definitely think it will gain more acclaim over time. it's got a lot to love about it, even considering the high bar sufjan's previous work has set. he hasn't made anything this expansive since illinois; it's like if illinois was recorded in a solarpunk world.
I love this psychedelic vibe, the layers, the feelings, just everything about it. There aren't many albums/songs I'm instantly a fan of when listening to it the first time around, but this one is in that select group.
This is such a huge artistic and philosophical masterpiece. Sufjan is one of the greatest musicians of our time. So wholesome from so many perspectives. Truly the journey of one who chooses his own true identity and path over the struggling of a prebuilt system of "masters". Thank you for all the art and thoughts you bring into this world. You have truly saved my life at several points in my life through your music. Thank you with all my heart.
My comments on this album are inconsequential, but here I have the ability to express them. The statements left here now are only for my own amusement. This is merely how these tracks left me and the urge to take note of this achievement warrants the effort to do so, at least I think it does. The reference to my experience as being an "achievement" speaks towards my willingness to listen. If I confide in music for some sort of extra meaning to the understanding of my existence, then so be it, but who can blame me? What other art form can take you on such an introverted joyride while trying to extrovert itself to the point of seeming to be entertainment? This album does this, and Sufjan Stevens does this every time he puts something out. I have always felt that with all of his music there is the invitation to bring in a hefty variety of fans with many not knowing why. I can not cast down the ignorance within his fan base because their seems to be a deliberate intent for the particular appeal his music offers. For me, there is an obvious balance of what the current times may consider to be "Pop" mixed with lyrical contextualism that contradicts the algorithm most record labels adhere to. Some may find it maddening to realize that not only basic messages can be catchy. Fans of this artist know to look past this capitalist mirage to arrive in a place music was meant to put you in. The wonderment, curiosity of contradicting constants, and overall joy in music is alive and well within this album and it is not my opinion that I wish to express here, instead I offer my gratitude.
I don’t know how else to let Sufjan himself know how much I appreciate this album, so I figure I’ll write it as a comment on the official RUclips page. This album is a gift to the world. Thank you for making it. I’m certain I will carry this album with me through the rest of my life.
I’m complete awe of this human. The flow is a story I don’t want to end just like Carrie and Lowell. I ride float and levitate through it as if waves are carrying my spirit. The beauty and embodiment of it floods my eyes and my heart beats to its rhythm. Such amazing talents which speaks to my soul. Leaves me emotional yet stable, hopeful and dream evoking ...fulfilling my imaginations wildest visions in music form. What a perfect soundtrack for the mind. In love all over again. This is truly magic and such a gift. Thank you 🙏🏼❤️✨Sufjan. Bless your mind and talents. Grateful for sharing your gift. This is such a thoughtfully well-done album. Something for everyone! If the next album delves further into a much darker tone as hinted by some of the songs in the last half of this album.....this album is just unforgettable.........

Stevens has the courage to call it out as it is. Too many people are saying ‘hold in there’ and ‘that’s just life, it’s not fair’ well you know fuckin what, things are bad, very bad and it’s ok not to be ok. This albums a masterpiece. I think all his albums are but this one is special. Thank you Sufjan. One more thing on my mind is that this album reminds me of when Kid A came out and a lot of Radiohead fans weren’t happy. Well look at it now, it’s probably seen as their Classic. Talk Talk too with ‘Spirit of Eden’ and ‘Laughing Stock’. They pushed the boundary’s of what music can and should be x
Frank Crump yeah possibly mate. The Age of Adz was incredible. Maybe this is his second moment? I don’t know another artist/band to have a second ‘Kid A moment’

I'm his age and i'll stay alive as long as he stays alive. He's a wonderful excuse for.
this was the only reason i was excited to start school. once i started school it would be a month later that i get this beautiful album and now it’s here
I LOVE this album cover! All of his album covers are great, but I just especially like his one for some reason
This is 3d art
The end of 'Goodbye to all that' is sublime.
