This seemingly simply animated movie with it's hauntingly beautiful tunes has impacted my life in ways I can't even verbalize. My favorite moment is when Bilbo climbs the tree and upon seeing the sunshine & butterflies says, "There are moments which can change a person for all time, and I suddenly wondered if I would ever see my snug hobbit hole again. I wondered if I actually wanted to". I weep every time I see that scene. The greatest adventure REALLY IS what lies ahead.

I want to keep listening to this song and have more adventures, and I want it to play at the end of my life; right before the greatest adventure yet.
I remember the night this cartoon aired back in 1977. I was 7 years old, and I transformed my room into a little hobbit hole. I crafted a little wooden sword, made a pipe out of a Tinkertoy set I had, and made a ring out of Reynolds wrap. What fun that was, in a much better, simpler time.
Alex, I like the cartoon better, but I liked the movie also. I was disappointed that the movie didn't have things that the animation had. But the cartoon is only an hour long. This cartoon will always be number one for me, guess because I grew up with it. =)
alex laxson No, I didn't know that, but I can see why. I haven't read the book in years, I think a year after this cartoon came out is when I last read it. The part what disappointed me in the film was the large white orc. I cant remember if that large white orc was in the book or not? In my opinion, that made the movie too war-like, too much like LOTR, and not the adventure that the book was and also this cartoon. I loved LOTR, but that was supposed to be all war, battles, and extreme hardships. The Hobbit should have not been like that, at least not that I remember from reading. What are your thoughts on that?
Funny because my first exposure with the Hobbit was actually this cartoon, and I loved the music, the animation, and the story. Became my favorite that I almost forgot about this movie when I was in middle school. Came back to it in 12th grad to see that I still remember watching this when I was just 5 years old.
I've watched this movie so many times, I could literally act out the entire film right now. My dad had a ring that he gave me, which I pretended was the ring from The Hobbit. It was a pretty good shape for it. And I would--and still do once in a while--listen to that goblin song over and over again.
This is the best version of The Hobbit for me. I remember my dad showing me this movie when I was very young (late 80s). This song still makes me emotional every time I hear it. The animated version of Gollum will always be my favorite.
My grandma sent me this song a few months ago and wanted me to take a listen. She loved the meaning and lyrics of it and wanted to share this beautiful song with me. She passed away a month ago, and I keep coming back to this song now thinking of her. I love you my sweet, Grandma Rosa 💜 The greatest adventure is what lies ahead indeed. Until we meet again.
Ah man, just listening to these songs is making me get all misty-eyed. This movie was probably one of the sole biggest influences on me as a small child. I used to borrow it from the local library every chance I got and watch it endlessly. If it wasn't for this, I never would have gotten into Tolkien or fantasy in general. It may be rather late, but thank you for uploading these.

I’m not gonna say those giant spiders didn’t give me nightmares, but this movie kickstarted my love of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings! @Kiara Thompson It's supposed to hurt. That's the point. People who live their lives too deeply into fictional stories are missing something. They want the adventure without the danger. Their heroes aren't real. It's only fitting Tolkien wrote The Hobbit due to boredom, and that the very word "Hobbit" is rooted in the word "Habit", as in a daily habit doing the same thing over and over.
@Boom As I see it, the problem is that people need to be given a reason to endure the pains of real life; some accomplishment that can be reached by doing so, and which is worth the struggle, and these days, people seem to see any such reason as the only thing worse than the pain itself. As long as they have that perspective, they *can't justify* facing reality in any consistent way, and that's sad, sad stuff. P.S.: Speaking personally, as someone with too much passion to sit back and live my life in a fantasy world; as someone who went out to face my life and confront my challenges, I can assure you that the rewards offered by the world *are not* adequate to make up for the pain, challenge, loss or futility, so there must be something more.

Ahh nostalgia. I was introduced to The Hobbit from this cartoon. I found it charming. :) The entire story of The Hobbit is meaningful to me because it was my dorm's theme during my first year at college and I love the parallels it has to being a college kid and just starting out in the world.
This was my theme when I moved into my apartment living on my own without someone I was dating or related to. Been living here for a few months and every day still feel new here. It's scary, but exciting at the same time!
Best animated movie of my childhood. I remember when I first saw the Goblins I was in shock. And riding Worgs. Truly a remarkable creation by two geniuses.
I thank my late father for introducing me to this amazing story that is still relevant today and played out in many stories. Something special about this particular one though. And the symbolism of a Hobbit with little strength is so appropriate in this time where we too feel like Hobbits unless we are super powerful.
This holds song so much emotive power for me. It brings me back to 1970’s as a little kid playing in my bedroom with my parents still married. Happier times in my childhood.

Sean Taylor The world is filled with Luciferians dumby. The only reason to ever get out, is to find a place to die. That's basically what happened with Thorin & Company. Bilbo is just a lucky burglar.
The Hobbit ... a novel anyone should read and read again in this particular historical time, in these own days. The Hobbit is a great novel, maybe the truliest and greatest, about the war; the madness of course, the horror of course, egoism of men and dwarfs ... but at the same time the tremendous and enormous humanity, a kind of mad and authentic sweetness and innocence making or, better, playing war. About this, the hobbit could surely be considered one of greatest ever imagined
I'm about to go to a new school, a military academy that I've always wanted to go to, for my last year of highschool. I'm sad as I will be leaving behind all of my friends and everything I know, but this truly is the start of the greatest adventure for me.
In my opinion, THIS version of The Hobbit is better than Peter's. While it DOES hold a rich mythology, complex themes and frightful creatures like Smaug. We forget that Tolkien wrote the book as a children's story. As such, this version holds true to that vision well
Oh, I remember how we recorded this song and how we recorded the others... What a time it was!! I will never forget the clatter of Bilbo's little feet as he happily ran after filming ended every evening. Damn, I'll have to visit the rest of the cast!!
What a wonderful movie this is. Ever since I saw it in middle school way back in 2007, the film looked UGLY to me but it was ugly in a way that caught my attention and kept me invested in the story. Not to mention these beautiful vocal songs by Glenn Yarbrough. Simply an enchanting and beautiful listen. Most people tend to think of their holiday stop motion specials such as Rudolph and Frosty but when I think of Rankin/Bass their hand drawn fantasy adaptions such as these LOTR specials and The Last Unicorn will always be the first things I think of. A special thank you and RIP to the many artists and creatives who made this special a reality including Mr. Arthur Rankin Jr who died in 2014 and (as of this typing) the unfortunate passing of Mr. Jules Bass who’s death was announced today on October 25, 2022. Thank you and sleep well dreamers…
Shout Factory needs to release this, along with The Return of the King and The Flight of Dragons on dvd. They already did The Last Unicorn, now they just need to do these gems, and everything will be A-Okay. :)
I watched this movie once when I was a very young boy, probably 6 or 7 years old, and I only remembered the tune of this song, until now when I’m 20, and I have finally found it again ❤ I should ask my dad about it because he would have been 7 or 8 when the movie came out, and he obviously played it for me that one time as a kid
When I was like...8 or 9, I would watch this movie with my brothers, because I was always afraid of watching it by myself when Gollum came on :P but the music in it is just brilliant, and in my teen years I have come to love this song soo much, and have definitely taken its message to heart.
The greatest adventure is what lies ahead Today and tomorrow are yet to be said The chances, the changes are all yours to make The mold of your life is in your hands to break The greatest adventure is there if your bold Let go of the moment that life makes you hold To measure the meaning can make you delay It's time to stop thinking and wasting the day. The man who's a dreamer and never takes lead Who thinks of a world that is just make believe Will never know passion; will never know pain Who sits by the window will one day see rain The greatest adventure is what lies ahead Today and tomorrow are yet to be said The chances the changes are all yours to make The mold of your life is in your hands to break The greatest adventure is what lies ahead.
No matter what I am going through- this song always puts a smile on my face! It brings back such beautiful memories from my childhood, and reminds me how much I've grown in mind and spirit.
I may not have been alive when this movie came out, but thanks to my dad I got to saw it when I was about 5 back in 2005. The living room was dark and a little hazy from my dad's pipe. We both watched the movie and ate little caramel candies. Honestly, moments like that are my favorite.
Hylian Dragoon I agree. Rankin/Bass did a much better job of telling the story of The Hobbit than Peter Jackson. Sticking pretty much close to the book then him.

I’m 42 and this song still gets me! I watch the 77 Hobbit every year around the Fall season.
Rest In Peace Orson Bean, thank you for so many great childhood memories
The song that got me into the lord of the rings/hobbit books :)
This is unironically one of my favourite songs of all time. Probably in my top 10
I was born in 2003 and this movie was such a huge part of my childhood, I rewatch it all the time and will show it to my kids one day
2005, and same. :)
1996 same here!
God brings me back to being a child. I miss those times.
Ahh nostalgia. I was introduced to The Hobbit from this cartoon. I found it charming. :) The entire story of The Hobbit is meaningful to me because it was my dorm's theme during my first year at college and I love the parallels it has to being a college kid and just starting out in the world.
There's so much on the horizon, and I can't wait to experience it all.
Why older cartoons, music, etc are more meaningful and beautiful than nowadays
Because it took actually talent to make quality.
I thank my late father for introducing me to this amazing story that is still relevant today and played out in many stories. Something special about this particular one though. And the symbolism of a Hobbit with little strength is so appropriate in this time where we too feel like Hobbits unless we are super powerful.
I love The Greatest Adventure and think it would be a perfect wedding song.
Still gives me goosebumps after all these years..
Im leaving for my first day of college today and i played this as i rolled out of the driveway
I just moved to Vegas after living almost 39 years in Central NEW York. Posted this quote to FB and left...
a geek after my own heart. go get 'em brother
How r u now?
Graduates college... plays this.
Love to hear what life had in store for you! Fill us in!
I sang this song to both my kids as lullabies. Can't get much better than this
Watched it two days ago. Perfect adaption for children. Such a beautiful film.
So much memory from my childhood
This is something I love about the Tolkien universe, is all the wholesome messages that are littered throughout
10/10 would cry to
This holds song so much emotive power for me. It brings me back to 1970’s as a little kid playing in my bedroom with my parents still married. Happier times in my childhood.
Haaa, beautiful voice, beautiful memories.
my dad and i watched this movie all the time when i was a kid, i’m now planning to sneak this song into my wedding in the next year or so. my fiancé will be all for it, i just want to surprise my old man with a nice memory
My father has this on vinyl, we used to listen to it all the time when we were kids :D
Can someone get these get added to Spotify?
I watched the movie growing up because my dad loved it. These songs will always have a special place in my heart. Thank you Glenn
All of America needs to hear this song.
The whole world needs to hear this song.
Sean Taylor I take what I said back. I want everyone to stay in a box.
The world doesn't deserve to continue as it is.
+Michael Groesbeck Quite the pessimist I see lol
Maybe the world would become a better place if everyone took the meaning of the song into account.
Sean Taylor The world is filled with Luciferians dumby. The only reason to ever get out, is to find a place to die. That's basically what happened with Thorin & Company. Bilbo is just a lucky burglar.
Michael Groesbeck . true . but that doesn't mean that humanity can't change . people can always find the path to redemption
How was the academy?
A core memory has unlocked
a wonderfully optimistic song for New Years Eve!
This is what the Hobbit was meant to be like. A children's story.
Haha, this should have been the main theme for Peter Jacksons movies =D
Why ruin this awesome movie putting it in peters crappit movie
In my opinion, THIS version of The Hobbit is better than Peter's. While it DOES hold a rich mythology, complex themes and frightful creatures like Smaug.
We forget that Tolkien wrote the book as a children's story. As such, this version holds true to that vision well
He did use track #7 directly in the first Hobbit film. (He might have used more songs in the next two Hobbit movies, but I guess I'll never know!)
@@d.m.collins1501 You'll never know? What's that supposed to mean?
@@jongreenleaf1000 Hur durr peter jackson bad hur durr
Man, this takes me back. I used to watch this movie all the time when I was young. Reminds me of simpler times.
Shout Factory needs to release this, along with The Return of the King and The Flight of Dragons on dvd. They already did The Last Unicorn, now they just need to do these gems, and everything will be A-Okay. :)
Warner Bros owns the 1974 onwards Rankin-Bass content (except for The Last Unicorn)
I was in my senior year of high school when this film was created. There's no better theme song for that moment in your life!
This made a 50 year old man cry like a baby.
Самый лучший мультфильм, самые лучшие саундтреки! Прям чувствуешь доброту исходящую оттуда! Браво тем кто его снял!
I'm going to sing this song for the talent show at school
i hope you're pretty young. love the song, but this could kill your chance of dating. but you gotta do what's right for you. go for it.
Three years later, but how did it go?!
@A. Sanchez what a pity.
When I was like...8 or 9, I would watch this movie with my brothers, because I was always afraid of watching it by myself when Gollum came on :P but the music in it is just brilliant, and in my teen years I have come to love this song soo much, and have definitely taken its message to heart.
the riddles in the dark song was a little creepy for kids.
What a great song - sums up life perfectly.
The greatest adventure is what lies ahead
Today and tomorrow are yet to be said
The chances, the changes are all yours to make
The mold of your life is in your hands to break
The greatest adventure is there if your bold
Let go of the moment that life makes you hold
To measure the meaning can make you delay
It's time to stop thinking and wasting the day.
The man who's a dreamer and never takes lead
Who thinks of a world that is just make believe
Will never know passion; will never know pain
Who sits by the window will one day see rain
The greatest adventure is what lies ahead
Today and tomorrow are yet to be said
The chances the changes are all yours to make
The mold of your life is in your hands to break
The greatest adventure is what lies ahead.
Your welcome 😏
Thank you Mr. Forbes, for showing me this epic tale that would help shape me into the person I am today.
1977?
DANG!
I first saw that movie sixteen years later. I was just a kid. Good times.
My childhood
me too....I would write a book to explain
Schmidty030 yep and 1986 transformers and the secret of NIMH
Can't relate to Transformers. I was born in 1998, soooooooo. I don't really know how The 1977 Hobbit entered my childhood, it was just always there.
My word. Nostalgia crits you for 10k.
Thank you for this upload. :)
NOSTALGIA CRIT!
I remember watching this cartoon on VHS when I was little!
No matter what I am going through- this song always puts a smile on my face! It brings back such beautiful memories from my childhood, and reminds me how much I've grown in mind and spirit.
Still my favorite movie of all time
I may not have been alive when this movie came out, but thanks to my dad I got to saw it when I was about 5 back in 2005. The living room was dark and a little hazy from my dad's pipe. We both watched the movie and ate little caramel candies. Honestly, moments like that are my favorite.
That awkward moment when this movie is actually better than the Peter Jackson version (from a story perspective anyway).
Hylian Dragoon
I agree. Rankin/Bass did a much better job of telling the story of The Hobbit than Peter Jackson. Sticking pretty much close to the book then him.
in basically every way besides money made
If anything, it has more heart.
@@emmetthatcher9583 a movie with heart will always be better than a high budget movie without it.
PJ's LOTR are my favorite movies...but I will watch this cartoon any day over PJs Hobbit
I love how the forest elves look in this version. Lanky folk, just lazing about.
