@@TravelinYoung we started from the age of around 16 and took the ferry from my home town of Stavanger Norway with sleeping bags and tents to Jylland and took the train to Roskilde with canping trips along the way. We could buy beer in DK but not in norway untill we were 18 😂. DK and the continent was like a taste of freedom for us young Norwegians. Back in the 90’s there were alot off larger and smaller festivals in DK and though we were kids we loved 60’s and 70’s music so we stopped in any town along the way to raid vintage record stores for rare Neil Young records and anything vinyl. There used to be alot of these stores all over DK back then. The danes are also relaxed and cool people. We never felt unsafe and unwelcomed. Now i’m taking my kids to denmark when i can to festivals and theme parks. They will hopefully love our lovely neighbor in the south as much as i do.
The third largest Danish music festival is not on that map in the beginning, Jelling Musikfestival. It it a 4 day event, visited by almost 40.000 each year.
If happening again, you could try "Langeland Festival". Very relaxed and with lot of children (for good and for worse), but with great atmosphere. And "Grøn Koncert", a one day 'festival' touring Denmark
It is heartwarming to hear you pronounce Tønder festival. I read that Tønder has got 4 names. The frisian one, the german one, the standard danish one and finally the Local danish dialect one. And you use the latter. 100 percent. “Tynne”
Jailbreak in Horsens happened for the first time this year and it will happen again next year. It's the same ppl who organise the copenhell festival. Jailbreak is a metal festival and this year they had Accept, Sabaton etc. The festival is held on the prison grounds/inside the prison walls.
There is Vig Festival too, for 3 days in july. I go every year! The music and everything is great there. 👍🎶🌞 I dont camp, but take the train everyday. It's Free when you have tickets. There is also Kløften in Haderslev. Ive been there too.
Being from the Northern part of Denmark I grew up with Skagen Festival. Most of my years I was a volunteer but got to go to a bunch of the shows as well. Been quite a few years since I've been there now so not sure if it still holds up, but it was part of my childhood and I loved it.

I have been a volunteer at Samsø festival for 15 years (week 29 each year), and have been to both Kløften festival in Haderslev, and Bork Festival all three are about 6000-7000 partout tickets (and 1000-1500 volunters) each, and has primerily danish bands both what ever is at the top the charts as well as legacy bands. Then of course there is the Nibe Festival i northern Jutland (the same week as Roskilde and even with the 150.000 people at roskilde there will be 12-13.000 at Nibe including volunteers). i would estimate thet there is at least 2 festivals going on somewhere in denmark in the period late may to early august. My parents works as volunters at Bork festival and go to Skagen Festival as regulars patrons. I bought a caravan for Samsø Festival right before corona struk and finally got to use it this year.
I would recommend going to Copenhell at least once, It's one big family of friendly people. There is great music, and the mood is so fantastic that you just never want it to end. Their t-shirt for this year said it all "Welcome Home"
This will be our 3rd time, we love it! After the first time we said that if we moved away from DK we would always make sure to come back for Tønder. Even better if we just stay here :).
I have been to Roskilde Festival every year since I moved here in 1986. I have volunteered there, for the last 20 years. I have also volunteered at CopenHell every year since they started. Both are just fantastic festivals. But if you go to Roskilde - you need to get the full experience of 8 days. There is so much going on in the camping area and small bands playing.
If you're into jazz, try Silkeborg, it's on the harbour and they don't charge for the open air, but you can of course also pay to get in at the more intimate concerts. Zididada... I went to one of the very small festivals when I was 19... They totally rock the stage. Same year I saw safri-duo, who also put the stage on fire. Anyway, you're Americans, you're comfortable with big cars. Try camping with the largest autocamper you can rent. You'll end up being the center of the camping site. Bands, just the simple list: - Cartoons seems popular with the younger generation again. - Medina - Mø - Oh Land - Fallulah - Alphabeat - Natasja (but I believe that it's mostly the Danish language ones who know about it) - Nephew ... If you're into danglish - Lukas Graham There's more that people don't believe are Danish...
Camping at Roskilde is a whole thing if you stay the week, like you prepare with you campmates for the whole year leading up to it. And you have to know how construct a Roskilde camp, to stay dry when if it rain, cool when it's hot, secure everything for when it storms. Prepare where to set up, which entrance to use, who carries what. It's like a very coordinated affair if you want a good spot. And REEALLY fun
Copenhagen Jazz Festival is a bit like Distortion. It's a city festival and it has free music acts around the city and different venues that charge a fee. So there's usually a lot of free jazz to be found around the city parks etc and then in the evening it's mostly venues with an entrance fee where you can hear artists perform. Fun fact: There's actually a street in Copenhagen named after the late American jazz pianist Kenny Drew Sr. (Kenny Drews Vej) who lived in Copenhagen for a number of years.
went to Tønder festival for the first time some 9 years ago with my Efterskole which has a tradition for taking the students for one day every year at the start of the school year. And it was then that I found my love for Hudson Taylor and their music ❤
23 yrs in a row at Roskilde and 5 yrs in a row at copenhell.... and I have seen hundreds of koncerts and one or two day festivals here in denmark as well. Many different genres. there is alot of music out there!
I don't live in Danmark anymore, but I work at Tonder Festival, this year being number 18. Its a cracking festival, must be I still travel a distandce for the week, its the last real festival of the season and it shows the techs that the long summer is over. I have done all the festivals you mention, but just going to stick with Tonder now, getting old
I'm in Esbjerg, and we used to have what was called "80'er Rock" (80's Rock) which was really popular with both original performers and coverbands. I'm not sure why it stopped. We have a week with music during the Summer still though if you're interested.
In Silkeborg we have Hede Rytmer, Riverboat Jazzfestival, Noget Bedre, Silkeborg Classic and others. Danish music, that I like is for instanse: Gnags, Johnny Madsen, Claus Hempler, C.V. Jørgensen, Nephew, Moonjam, Hanne Boel and many more.
I'd forgotten what a great singer you are, Miranda. Josh plays so well. Do you ever jam together, Josh plays, Miranda sings? We do that with opposite roles around here. Love your vids. You guys are great 👍
Roskilde musikfestival is one of the largest music festivals in the world and the absolute largest in Scandinavia. Not only that it is also one of the oldest having been in continues operation since 1972
Been to Copenhell since 2015, average age is probably around 30-40 years. In the 90s I went to Midtfyns which was the second biggest at that time. I live around 60km from Tønder, but never attended, would love to though. Smukfest is also on my list
dunno if you managed to catch Regatta in Silkeborg. but for sure worth the experience. also Silkeborg has a country and a jazz festival too well worth the visit
These past few years ive lived a stones throw from Roskilde Festival and there are alot of good bands (and solo acts as well) each year... they used to have alot of rock and heavy but thats mostly moved to Copenhell... but its insane to think that for one week each year the population of a mid size Danish city doubles just because of all the campers that go to Roskilde Festival
Festivals are no longer my thing, but back in the day I loved going to Smukfest. The setting is beatiful in the forest in Skanderborg. It's grown considerably since I was there and the lineup is no longer my style. It used to be more like a singalong party style where Roskilde is the more experimental discover-new-music kind of thing. Okay, so musically I may be stuck in the 90s, but I'd recommend Smukfest if any. Music suggestions (off the top of my head): Esther Brohus and Sing Sing Sing
Always Nice to see your videos. There is a Lot off small festivals around also. If you like Blues Music you should tjek out MOJO Blues bar, in Løngangstræde 21C, in Copenhagen. They have concert every Day year around.
Skive Festival and Rock under Broen. Danish bands I'd recommend Grand Avenue. It is Rasmus Walters old rock band. They have unfortunately disbanded but the music is fantastic.
Check out "The Sandmen" Sleepyhead album, "Sort Sol" Glamourpuss album, which features 3 track on the movie "Nattevagten" which you might want to watch. It has a young Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister). And "Laid Back" for some music with a "summer feel". "Baker Man" and "Sunshine Reggae" used to be popular tracks. "5 Minutes Past Loneliness" by The Sandmen and "Let Your fingers do the Walking" by Sort Sol I can especially recommend.
My fiancé and I went to Ringsted Festival this year and Sømændende were there as well - such a great party band with wonderful music and atmosphere. And the festival is in a wonderful park in the middle of the Ringsted. I hope you check it out.
Great video! Glad you mentioned Heartland! There I actually met and briefly talked to Douglas Coupland and R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe - and got their autographs! They were doing a talk at Heartland. Besides the concerts, talks are a staple of that festival - a really great idea I haven’t seen anywhere else. BTW, a great Danish singer of late is Andreas Odbjerg, who has proven that he sings in English really well - lots on RUclips - but who has now switched to Danish lyrics completely. His lyrics offer everyday turns-of-phrase stacked in surprising ways, though I can’t decide what genre it is, or compare him to anyone.
Although its only every 2nd year, Gutter Island is a really cool festival. Only about 1000 people are going there(incl band, volunteer, and guests). Its on masnedø. Roskilde festival has a tonne of music, but people would rather complain about the program, than go see something different/new
I know Miranda sayed that Copenhell is might not be your, thing but im telling ya both, should you guys change your mind, its a really good time... A couple of times the festival have been cellebrated as the most peacefull festival in Denmark. Like to think of us this generation of the hippies... Happy people with 2 purpeses Drink beers and bang their heads... 🤘
We have alot of koncerts in Aalborg in the summer to. Maybe just more single koncerts and not festivals. We just had the tall shipping race that lastet almost a week....alot of koncerts. Last Sundby 50 cent was here, we have skovrock in summertime. As other have mentioned we have the Nibe festival( aka " den lille fede").
I hope to go to CopenHell next year, i have been missing out on so many favorite bands but it can be a tad expensive.. Now they have CopenHell CON too so i just have to go next year hah! We have many great festivals, i am just missing the geeky conventions now!
Good thing about living in Europe is that you can easily go to concerts in other countries to. Just checked quickly concerts in Oslo Norway this autumn. Sting, Bob Dylan, Snoop Dogg and The Cure all have concerts.
Yeah, each of the 3 times we've been to Norway was to see music. Olso - St. Paul and the Broken Bones, Stavanger - Bon Jovi, and Bergen - Rival Sons :).
I haven't been to any festivals in Denmark for several years. But in September I'll be at the Tom Dooley and Appalachian Culture Festival in Ferguson, North Carolina for the first time 😎
AvernaX Skagen (Also one of those multiple venue single ticket) Rock under Broen (1-day in Middelfart) ... unfortunately not going to make it to Tønder this year either - it will have to be moved up on the priority list. Bands? Hmmm... Depends... Sort sol maybe? ...and you like Sømændene? If sailorpunk could be up your alley, maybe a bit of a stretch, coz they're a bit rowdy, but tonnes of fun and such a cool energy, look up Skullclub. Lots of other great bands in various genres, both new and old - guess it's just about what you're in the mood for. And oh! Cooenhell is definitely not just for youngsters, although they too are very welcome. It's a lot more of a segment thing, whether you dig thunderous drums and ripping distorted guitars. And now that you did mention both Christiania and Metallica, they actually played Den grå hal back in the mid '90s (Load era), but under alias as the Four horsemen. The ones in there, including a buddy of mine, got quite the surprise.
I go to Roskilde every year, and it is mostly because of hygge with friends and the music I just a great bonus. Have you also heard about “festuge” around Denmark like Vordingborg festuge which has mostly danish bands like Sømændene and it is free to go.
@@ThomasVSGyldborg I know it is, I attend it every year. But I mentioned it because there was a long list of band recommendations as to a reason for attending it.
This was so lovely and calming to listen to. I can recommend the open mike nights that some bars host as well, it is just so cozy. That being said, weirdly one of my favorite things is actually the summer nights when there is music on Femøren at Amager Beach. Like, I am not a big fan of Ed Sheeran, but I was kinda at his concert recently anyway. Just from inside my livingroom.
You can try "Ild i Gilden" in Roskilde (just beside the Roskilde Festival area). It is a small folk music festival properly not too dissimilar to Tønder, though much, much smaller. You can camp there, but also not farther away than you can take a cab home. And to Josh's great delight, I am sure, they have beer from Herslev Bryghus - they do make great beer.
Tønder should be pronounced with the same rhythm as "Donner-pass" [first part] (especially with the original German rhythm of 'donner') ~ with a split in the middle "Tønh-ner" (silent d). Tønder is hard to pronounce for any English speaker, I think, because the tendency will be to focus on that (dastardly) "Ø" ~ however, the trick to make that particular word (place name) recognizable to a native speaker is to get that rhythm/split in the middle right :)
I would really recommend that you visit odense in September there's a new festival (second year) called Nashville songwriters festival it's focused on lot of the songwriters behind the music from Nashville around 80 artists on different venues, this year Craig Finn, Jonathan brooks and a lot of other Tony Arata (Garth brooks) Terry jo box (Ashley mcbryde) would love to se you there and check out the website for more information
Yes, I am aware of it but I can’t make it this year. Enjoy, both Andrew Combs and Foy Vance are planning to go and they are fantastic. Andrew is one of my favorites.
We often travel from Norway to festivals in Denmark. We also have festivals, but the Danish festivals are the best :-)
They are spectacular, good choice!

Happy people with 2 purpeses
Drink beers and bang their heads...
Bon Iver Northside 2019 💕
I hope to go to CopenHell next year, i have been missing out on so many favorite bands but it can be a tad expensive.. Now they have CopenHell CON too so i just have to go next year hah!
We have many great festivals, i am just missing the geeky conventions now!
You have to go to Samsø festival
Nordsjæl festival september the 3rd......at Hammermøllen in Hellebæk (near Elsinore)
See you guys at Tønde Festival. I´m a volunteer there, and hope to bump in to you. Anyway, enjoy and go see Tami Neilson and The Mavericks.
Tami is on our list! We’ve seen her a few times, so good!
One festival that is quite large and alot og danes havent heard about is Ringsted Festival…
The danish artist Alex Vargas is amazing.
Also Tina Dickow.
You forget Nibe and Skagen in the same weekend as Roskilde.
Both relative big festivals.
I haven't been to any festivals in Denmark for several years. But in September I'll be at the Tom Dooley and Appalachian Culture Festival in Ferguson, North Carolina for the first time 😎
I love the country music festival in Silkeborg.
I was a volunteer at Grøn Koncert in Næstved, which was awesome :D
Do you know Sebastian? He has made some great songs.
AvernaX
Skagen (Also one of those multiple venue single ticket)
Rock under Broen (1-day in Middelfart)
... unfortunately not going to make it to Tønder this year either - it will have to be moved up on the priority list.
Bands? Hmmm...
You have to try Copenhell it's awesome

@@SenemYucel19
My older sister doesn't like metal, but she still attend Copenhell on saturday because it is such a special venue.
@@ThomasVSGyldborg
Exactly
@@ThomasVSGyldborg I know it is, I attend it every year. But I mentioned it because there was a long list of band recommendations as to a reason for attending it.
Aarhus Festuge, Grim Festival, Tunø Festival, Samsø Festival, Jelling Festival, Kløften Festival , Nibe Festival, Wonder Festival, Badesøen Festival.
Den lille fede - Nibe Festival (close to Aalborg) is also nice
You have to try Alive Festival ❤️
You forgot the festival that starts the festival session: JELLING MUSIKFESTIVAL. And its the 3.rd largest festival in Denmark
How about Langelandfestival
Brisket bid Miranda? Brisket certainly took the bisquet 😝.
Mew and Kashmir are probably my favourite danish bands (and they also sing in english) :-)
I wish you had talked a bit about the food stands at the festivals
You should try Femø Jazz Festival at some point...
I have been to Roskilde festival 17 times and copenhell 7 times...
And a bunch of punk festivals in ungdomshuset and huset...
If you like upcoming bands you should visit Mosstock Festivalen. The oldest festival in DK. Small and very cozy :) Nibe Festivalen is also great
