- Can you believe this is the first time I have ever filmed a Kathy Wingert guitar? I know, me neither! I have loved Kathy's guitars for decades but have never had the chance to get in front of the camera with one until today.
Thank you to my friends at The Guitar Showroom @theguitarshowroom6243 for the loan of this beautiful instrument - you can see more here theguitarshowroom.co.uk/produ...
If you've enjoyed this video please like (or even super like!) subscribe and I'll see you in the next one - until then stay tuned!
Michael
One of the most balanced recorded acoustic guitars I've ever heard. No bass woof, no treble peaked top end just perfect.
@@dreamfield2 glad you enjoyed it!
Great video, Michael, and fantastic playing! Kathy is an incredible guitar maker, but beyond that, she's a wonderful mentor and an inspiration as a person. I credit her with everything I've achieved in my career and all the valuable knowledge I've gained. ❤
@@IsaacJangGuitars great to hear from you dude - looking forward to featuring your work on my channel too!
Wonderful, I'd never heard of Kathy, time to check her out. Thanks for sharing.
@@ellenrik oh you’re in for a treat. She’s amazing!
your playing is SO tasteful! You reveal the sweet spot of every guitar you get in your hands. Chapeau!
@@kalleblom5564 thank you so much! I try my best!
Kathy’s guitars are heavenly. Actually she’s in Rancho Palos Verdes, south of LA and about 30 minutes drive from Kevin Ryan in Long Beach.
Right! And yes they are!
Beautiful guitar. Was featured here in Santa Rosa, Ca ..when we had an annual custom guitar show. Her booth always had a long line of potential customers. Love your playing. (Airy and forceful .) and enjoying your channel. Thank you for your uploads !
@@ukestudio3002 very cool! Thank you so much for the kind words. Judging by your handle I’m hoping you’re familiar with the work of my friends Jake at Hive Ukuleles and Steve Grimes!
That's a very fine sounding guitar and you are a great player, thanks 🎶
@@darrenkerton9837 thank you very much Darren!
Years ago when we lived in Indianapolis we traveled to Nashville to see the "All Star Guitar Night" a tribute to Chet Atkins. On the way down we stopped at The Guitar Gallery just north of Nashville to check out their selection of top end guitars. Out of all the guitars there, two stood out, an Olson and Kathy Wingert. Such a great builder!! Thanks for the video!
Thanks for sharing Curt! Jim is another one - love his guitars but I haven’t played one on this channel yet
A very fine luthier.
A heightened sense of style, example.. the bridge and rosette.
Sounds great, gorgeous, pure class.
Glad you enjoyed it Jeff!
Kathy Wingert is based in Rancho Palos Verdes in So Cal. I have a great EVC Brazilian and she is an artist.
You may be playing an older Wingert because I thought she developed an allergy to Cocobolo. Her rosettes are usually made by her daughter. She is a delightful person to work with and makes instruments with beautiful tone.
Right! Yes this is 2010 - I’m so sorry to hear Kathy’s developed a Coco allergy, it does happen. I know Jimmi does a lot of her more involved inlays but I wasn’t sure if this was her work. I have to agree, I first met Kathy in 2009 and I love talking with her - just never had the chance to record one of her guitars until now!
"We need to talk more about Kathy Wingert!" You damn right we do!!
Yes we do!
You so obviously enjoyed exploring that guitar, and I’m pleased it challenged your view on Cocobolo!
I did and it did!
Lovely !
Thank you!
Grüezi Herr Watts,
0:00 We need to talk more about Ian Chisholm,
Ditchling, Sussex ( Right up the road from Brighton )
He is both an excellent musician, as he is a formidable builder of string instruments.
Greetings from the sunny climes of Basle, Switzerland
I think I may have met Ian recently at a folk club
"Ignore those ... for a moment" - that was EPIC 🤣🤣🤣
Ha ha glad you like it
Gorgeous and beautiful sounding guitar.
Glad you approve! Thanks for watching
This might be my favorite sounding guitar you've showcased, and that's saying a lot!
Yes it is! Like I say, Kathy Wingert is a huge talent and I’m very grateful to have had the opportunity to film this guitar!
Michael, wonderful video. I love Wingert guitars and hopefully will own one someday. My preference is for African Blackwood. Thanks again and all the best.
Thank you! I am also partial to some ABW
Hey Michael how are you sir Did you ever get to try a doerr modified dreadnought I have one thats tunnel redwood over African black wood with Brazilian rosewood bindings it sounds great ive seen Kathy's guitars before there equally beautiful sounding
Hi there! Sadly I’ve only ever played a couple of Tom’s guitars but they were very beautiful
yep, pretty much has the character of a 12 fretter. Nice guitar and wonderful playing as always Michael!
Thank you!
A beautiful guitar, beautifully played!
Thank you!
@@MichaelWatts Honestly, thank you!
Wow, it’s got a lovely growl. Lovely instrument 👍
Absolutely!
This guitar sounds very sweet. DADGAD is my favorite tuning.
Glad you enjoyed it! I love DADGAD too
CHA CHING!!! AMAZING guitar… sadly, crazy expensive.
Handmade acoustics by the world’s finest luthiers tend to command less than half of the price of a good concert violin bow. Not the violin. Just the bow. With that in mind I’d say we guitarists are very fortunate! Thank you so much for watching!
Probably one of the best balanced guitars I have heard on headphones. Oddly, having a coco/spruce guitar, and having heard a few, it didn't sound that coco-ey to me - less of the snap on the attack I associate with fingerpicked coco - it took the flatpick to bring that out (although the same long, long decay). Could be different in life, of course. What really interested me was the back shot about a minute and a half in. The binding and purfling are done in such a way as to fool the eye that they are almost three dimensional, looking a bit like the raised sides you see on violin family instruments. As for the12/14 fret thing, I happen to prefer 14 fretters and I think Collings and, to an extent, Fylde already have that one licked. Fine guitar.
It is the smoothest, butteriest Cocobolo guitar I have ever heard
@@MichaelWatts Thought it might be - that's not what I like about coco. It's the golden nails being hammered (think Pat Martino on acoustic!) sound.
Nice guitar, was the action set up low on it ?
It was pretty standard - not appreciably high or low tbh
Has quite a mellow sound to my ears - which is not necessary a bad thing.
I guess - it does growl when you dig in though
The golden age of lutherie!!! You should do something on the revolution happening in Quebec Canada.
I’ve got an interview with Michael Greenfield on my channel that you should check out!
@@MichaelWatts I did. Really wonderful brother. All of your videos have genuinely educated me on the vast world of wonderful builders there are out there.
There is just this incredible contingent of apprentices of Somogyi and each other that live within a hundred miles of each other. Beauregard, Dontcho Ivanov, Michel Pellerin, and others. They collaborate and help each other out and because of that are making some really incredible instruments. (I have two Pellerin's that I love)
They along with a couple of other luthiers collaborated on a guitar to honour Somogyi that was revealed at SoundMesse a couple of months ago. It was called the Legacy Project. The only thing missing was a Michael Watts video. Lol...
Mahalo Nui Loa Micheal
Alooooooooha Victor! A ole pilikia!
You profiled some wonderful luthiers here, Michael. One of my favorites, is Michael Bashkin. Have you ever thought of spotlighting Canadian luthier, Sergie DeJonge? Or even his daughter, Josia? I have a 2005 Sergie DeJonge in Brazalian and European Spruce. It's basically a 14 fret OM size body. Beautiful looking and sounding instrument. He's been building and teaching since 1970. (A contemporary of Jean Larrivee) He's a bit of a recluse on line, but would love to see and hear more from him and his instruments.
I agree about Sergei. I also had a 2005 Brazilian De Jonge, which I recently sold through Kim Sherman in Nashville. It was superb. Maybe it's the same one!?
@@ambientpeace4586 I'm certain it is! I picked it up in January of this this year from Kim at North American Guitar/Carter Vintage. Love Kim. I've bought a few instruments from her. Your Sergie now lives on the South Shore of Lake Superior in Northern Wisconsin! I play it looking out over the lake! a wonderfully inspriing combination. I've composed a couple new figerstyle instrumentals on it.
@@TheCurtissJohnson Yes, that's the one. I am so happy to hear this. It's a very special guitar and it now has a marvellous home! For what it's worth, I can also recommend this Wingert very highly. Mine also.🙂
@ambientpeace4586 you must have an amazing collection!
@@TheCurtissJohnson It was at one time. For some reason, I ended up more interested in the sound of old Martins and Gibsons. But I can say in all honesty that the Sergei you have now, the Wingert, and the Bown OM42 Michael has also played here, were among the very best. Best wishes for the future, and I hope the SDJ gives you many years of enjoyment.
between a martin and aa classical
That’s a great way of looking at it Kevin!
Wonderfull guitar and fine playing. I would prefer longer periods of dialogue and playing. It's too broken up to me. About three segments of each would be more informative and flowing. Constantly jumping many times between dialogue and playing in a short RUclips doesn't work and seems like a gimmick.
Every other video I get told to talk less and play more or play less and talk more. This is the first time I’ve been told to do more of both…
Thanks for watching though Stephen!
This ain't fair
Yes it is
