To be honest you did actually manage to sell a goblin to someone who went to buy 1/300th scale ships. That person was me. I fell in love with pirate goblin and walked away with one... I have no regrets . Oh and Louise you were super nice and you are good at small talk thank you for signing my goblin.

Whatever people think about pre-coloured printed minis, I guarantee that pre-coloured printed _terrain_ would absolutely sell - people really seem to hate doing terrain.
Or at least they stare at me like I'm mad when I say that it's my favourite part of the hobby! (I am basically making houses for my little war dollies at this point!)

Prepainted minis for X-wing is what got me back into the hobby and now I’m entering miniature painting competitions!
I’d love the option to buy a painted army for playing games with so that I can spend ages painting display pieces instead of 1000 orcs

I feel like there is a big difference between pre-painted minis and generative AI tools. For me, the important distinction is in how the tool is created more than in what the end user gets out of them. For something like pre-painted minis, art prints, or stock images, an artist is creating the master that then gets duplicated as much as needed. For generative AI, a company is processing a huge collection of work, generally without compensating or even notifying artists, and then using a probability model derived from all of those works to generate images that cannot be traced back to the human artists. So, at least to me, pre-painted minis are fine, but generative AI feels like an unethical way for tech companies to extract money without compensating or even crediting the artists their models are built off of.

    • @orbitaltrash
      @orbitaltrash 5 месяцев назад +6

Came here to say this. Maybe if a generative AI was developed from one person's work and they had control over it and we're able to monetize it as they saw fit, I might feel differently. But as it stands, the software is created unethically and so what it creates is by extension unethical in my view.

when i was younger, i found the idea of pre-painted minis utterly repellant but i've since come to embrace the notion because there are a great many folks who have fine motor issues and other disabilities that make painting impossible who want to play tabletop games so, while my own interest is still mostly painting and modelling, i would be perfectly happy to play with folks that used pre-painted minis.

    • @JBurdoo

I play with precolored paper and flat plastic minis these days - Paperboys and Wofun. Remarkably good stuff. The paper still needs cutting and assembly, but the plastic just requires popping them out of the sprue and snapping them into the base. Done, and it's not even obvious they're flat until you look closely.

Yaay! I love that you loved my Moonstone table, totally worth the effort;) and 3D sculpting and painting is definitely a craft! The Torbridge Cull stuff we had printed for the table are some of the best sculpting I've ever seen on terrain. I love hand crafting and building terrain with foam, balsa etc, but 3D printing allows people to share great sculpts across the world. Still need to pick up a rascaltown goblin so i can build him a house.. (also apologies to Rob for rambling at him Friday, I was somewhat mashed!)

I’ve just finished listening to episode two, and it really struck a chord with me at the end.
Way back in the mists of time, the year 2000, I was studying A-Level art. About six to eight months into the course the building housing the art department was gutted by fire in an arson attack.
I lost all of my artwork, including a watercolour of an iridescent beetle and an oil pastel study of a Modigliani portrait that I was particularly proud of.
After this our art teacher spent, what felt like months, having us do “mark making exercises”. Which amounted to a few painted brushstrokes, or charcoal smears on a large sheet of paper, before discarding it.
This drove me mad with frustration and I spent lunchtimes and time after-school “finishing” these pieces.
That’s when I realised that because of the way my brain is wired up, I don’t enjoy the process of creating something, I only feel any kind of reward at having completed it.
At the time this applied to painting fine-art, but now it equally applies to model painting. I don’t enjoy painting my models, but I feel enormous satisfaction at finishing painting a model, sharing pictures of it online and displaying it in my cabinet.
It’s the collecting that I think appeals to me the most, I’d like to be able to play games with my models too, but circumstances don’t really allow that.
That said, I think I’d still feel some kind of stigma buying pre-painted models when I’ve been indoctrinated for nearly thirty years into thinking that painting IS the hobby, and playing the games is the leisure activity, and collecting for collecting’s sake or for display is a by-product.
Anyway, it made me think. Cheers for the entertaining and insightful podcast. I’ll look forward to plenty more.

This one is for Louise. Many years ago I was at a trade show and there was a huge robot arm that would reach down into a box pluck a stress cube then extend and flick the cube *over* the aisle and land perfectly in a children's basketball net where a person would take the cube out and hand it to a passerby. I still have mine. Will share a pic to the discord.

Just found out about this podcast, watch you all individually, going to be watching all the videos!
I love the idea of pre-painted 3D printed models, anything to lower the barrier to entry into the hobby for people, would I ever get those, probably not because I enjoy the building and the painting, I want my army to be what I have made, but some people don't like that side and just want to play, and if that gets more people to play then I'd be all for it, more people playing means more fun for everyone. Elitists will have an issue with it but they can bore off!
Also the idea of being able to print off GW bits in store would be awesome, I think they would make bank doing that.

Bukkake Vader gave me a much-needed laugh after a very Mondayish Monday 😂 But also, the discussion about pre-painted minis is interesting. It reminds me of the argument over whether Souls games should have an easy mode; ultimately, having the option to play on easy wouldn't take anything away from people who want to play it on full difficulty. Similar principle in my mind.
    Anyway... JUGGZ!

Imagine installing a ramp at the cinema so people in wheelchairs can watch a film and how angry that makes people with functioning legs feel because you've taken away their stairs!!! Emerging technologies that make something more accessible to wider society is a good thing. Prainted minis would be a great addition for so many people. The only discussion that needs to be had enthusiastically is about new how tech impacts and how it's regulated. Future and emerging technology just needs sensible regulation until it finds its feet. the whole "painted printjobs" thing is really interesting because you basically described Gunpla!
    and I love Gunpla!
And I don't think it being "pre-painted" (except for pannel lining) detracts from my enjoyment of building gunpla, and having it on my shelf!
But yeah, I feel like if pre-painted prints got TOO good, it would really effect the mini painting BUISNESS model. But in terms of 'heres a mini with basecoats on it - do the rest' I think I would really really enjoy that - and as Peachy said, if I didn't like it I just pray it in some other colour (which after sanding down, is what you can do with Gunpla)

There are so many different hobbyists
Some love lore ( historical you could say )
Some love to paint minis to the highest standards
Some love to game and the social and competitive interaction
Some love to build terrain and narrative
There is a little bit of all of those in all of us

I just loved that Juggz is sponsered by sodick. OMG - another great episode.
Manufacturing is an archaic industry especially here in the UK, its very backward and highly resistant to change - there is a huge market for the colour 3D printing particularly for battleline troops.
Prepainted scenery would defiantly be a thing.
I love painting but its a real commitment to paint KO - probably because I can't just slap it on and want each figure to look good on its own.

i like the idea of you could order a unit of models pre printed/painted that has themed "skins", like a gaming chair that is licensed to have a cars logo on it, when you go on the website you click on the theme you want so you could preview it. Then i could order a unit of models that has the artists paint job, the that artist would get a commission for every unit printed with their theme. You could then have battles where you could have Louise themed army vs a Peachy themed army!

The vr painting video was awesome, it showed how painting works and some of the techniques when you can remove the obscurified skill of working with paints, as each paint irl is different, in VR they're all consistant

Dave Graffam Models does a really great line of papercraft terrain. Paper terrain can be a little flimsy, but using it is one of the fastest ways to start playing, and the Dave Graffam designs are great!

I generally describe myself as a person who prefers to paint than to play - but I admit, with X-wing or the Battlestar Galactica fighter minis, there was a lot of value in being able to just pop stuff onto the table. Even in my minis, I'm enjoying painting the "good guys" but often just slog through the "bad guys" so that there's an opponent in the story on my self.
So, yeah, I think that a setup like Rob was suggesting wherein I could go to a webstore and say "I want these 20 dudes unfinished, plus these 10 "painted" in this basic scheme, and this one hero in this premium scheme" would be really valuable.

Just starting this one and can I say that Rob absolutely didn't talk too much in the first episode! The balance is excellent and the chemistry makes it flow so well. Huge fan of Juggz right here.

Rob is right about it not mattering how many people you reach, if you make an impact on just a few, it's worthwhile. And Louise, your 'worthless' videos are sparking joy in at least one curmudgeon that doesn't get much of that, so thank you for being a goofy Rogue.

9:00 I think that's neurodivergence Louise lol You do both have lovely discord ❤
Honestly the kids area for painting is a great idea, I'd have loved to try that when I was younger. It was only really painting at home with mum, or Heroquest with my parents ^^
Women, Pirates and Neurodivergents? Sold tbh lol, I'd have gone if it wasn't my partners birthday on the day :)
I need to pick up some Rascaltown gobbos at some point, they look like so much fun to paint! :)
I'm imagining the three of you walking around Salute with like the fake nose/glasses/moustache getup lol The revenge dress sent me, "Living well is the best revenge". You're doing great Louise ❤
Mach as in Mack, the funny thing is my partner was there at the same time looking at the CNC and 3D printing stuff for work
The accessibility with printed paintjobs is super cool honestly, I take 4-6 hours to paint my battleline models to a high standard as my tabletop level but it takes a long time to do full armies that way lol, Even for personal use that'd be super interesting lol I'd be curious to see how it affects our industry, especially for commission painters. In 10 years time might I be painting one of each model and then printing the rest of the paint jobs? I could probably lower my prices a bit then and spend more time focusing on character models. I am also nervous about it killing our work but that's always a thing lol
"Thanks for coming to our juggz" You are so lucky your communities are so wholesome lmao

1:16:10 man yeah, i've been saying this for a while and it's really nice to hear someone else say the same. I feel like deep down no one actually wants a balanced game (even if they say they do, which i'm sure they will) and I'm not even sure they want a streamlined game, they just want a functional game where things feel cool, fun enough to be worth using and match how you'd expect them to feel based on their lore. Games can be asymmetrically balanced as long as they feel winnable, but what's more important than that is that they feel worth playing, which can eliminate the desire to win entirely if the experience is fulfilling enough.
Modern 40k mechanically lacks depth of character even if it's a lot more approachable than older editions. I think some of the more recent codexes have gotten better about this but there's still an element of narrative immersion in the rules themselves that could be way more flushed out (like what is an objective even, why am i standing here, this would not be a hard thing to solve narratively but there's never really been an official attempt to do so out besides some light theming for secondaries). I'm sure there's people internally who are also frustrated by this. Kill Team is probably best modern GW game I've played that still nails this, even playing terrible factions or imbalanced matchups feels good sometimes if they perform like how'd you expect them to feel in the lore. I haven't played but Necromunda looks like it does a good job of this too.
To Louise's point, which is also really valid, I think things can feel powerful and cool narratively without being complicated. Magic the Gathering often does this well, as most cards in that game (individually) are pretty straight forward but still feel awesome and it all fits within a sentence or two of rules on a tiny piece of cardboard.
