Great gun! I have been using one for 20yrs for hunting the bush here in Canada. Using the aperture insert when sighting in helps tighten up your groups significantly. It also helps a lot to use circular targets that are just a little larger than your bead when sighting in. About a 4" circle at 25 yards and 6- 8" or so at 50-75 is adequate. This allows you to centre your bead in the circle and really helps accuracy. Lots of guys like hunting with no insert and it definitely works. I actually really like using a .150 insert for hunting (it is the largest Williams makes). I also use a oil based white paint marker (Sharpie makes a good one) on my front bead. I find it shows up better than the brass. Some guys who use the brass will polish it with Scotchbrite or light sand paper to brighten it up. Good luck this season. Keep the great videos coming.
The white bead is fine for bare ground hunting but in the snow I touch up the front bead with bright red or orange fingernail polish an I used the Williams twilight aperture! Good combination for older eyes! Liked your comments an tips!,,
I ran 1.5-4x scopes for years. Then a bought my kids an old Winchester 67A .22 with a peep sight and it was a tack driver. So I set out and found a ghost ring peep that fit on my Marlin 336 Weaver scope base. I can now switch from peep sighs back to my scope and not lose zero. Flexibility to run with the conditions in the field, the peep sight fits in my pocket.
Get a chair to sit on and a front and rear rest, and a more solid table. You want to know where the sights are zeroed exactly, which means getting as steady as possible. Once zeroed in, then practice from hunting type positions
Great rifle! I inherited one from my Grandfather. It was originally chambered in 300 savage made in the 50s but I had it rechambered to .308 win. It is very accurate!
Was wondering if you wouldn't mind answering the following questions: 1) What would you say is the average shot distance (in yards) in Maine? 2) What's the longest shot one could probably expect to take? I'm not talking about an outlier as I know one could sit on a powerline, etc. But if average is 50-60, have you heard of people in your circle taking 100 yard, 200 yard or even 300 yard shots? 3) I noticed you have a monte carlo stock with the peep sight. I've read where this can be an issue for some people getting a good sight picture. Some switch stocks, I read in the Benoit books where they would shave it down. Has the monte carlo stock been an issue for you with the peep sight? Thanks for any info!!!!! Good luck hunting this fall!
Hey thanks for the comment! I’d say my average shot is 25-50yrds. I have never had a good opportunity at a buck in the Maine woods (until last year) beyond 100yrds. Usually everything is up close. I know some people have issues with the Monte Carlo stock. However, I wonder if the issue lies in what the are using for a front sight. The front bead on my 7600 is high enough that I don’t find the stock a problem at all. Hope that helps 😁. Good luck this fall!
That is a great rifle. I have been hunting with a Remington Model Six pump chambered in 270 for years. I’m in upstate New York which is pretty thick woods and some farmland where I hunt. This is a perfect rifle for that type of hunting. I’ve probably taken 25 deer with that rifle.
I bought mine back when I was 16 years old. Mine is in 30-06 as well and it's taken a lot of deer. I'm a lefty so it fits me perfect. I'm looking for one in .308 for those just in case SHTF moments.
Always loved the look and feel of the 760's and 7600's. Great rifles. Your set up for accuracy left a lot to be desired. It really showed up at 50 yds. Imagine 100. Take a 12" target to 100 and if you can get it zeroed to 4-5", you can hunt with it. But you got to have a more stable shooting platform. A pillow ain't gonna cut it. If all else fails, scope it with a nice Leupold 1-5x32 Really nice rifle
I understand what your saying. However, I’m shooting a peep with no aperture. The bead at 50 yards basically covers a 4 inch circle. All a want out of that gun with a peep is to be able to hit an 8 inch pie plate at 100 yards consistently. Hunting in Northern Maine woods, most shots are less than 75 yards.
@@MaineOutdoorEnthusiast Hi. Thanks for posting. I would try this again starting with a bag or a cheap sled first. You can can group 1" at 50-75 yards all day with that gun and ghost ring for sure. I switched over to a Hi Viz front post with an aim point of 2" below at 25-75 yards. You get a bright front post in all conditions right up to the last couple of minutes of legal shooting. Aim point just below the bullseye means you aren't covering your deer and can still aim small. If I'm telling you what you already know sorry for redundancy. Starting with a solid rest off a bench you can get 1" group at 25-50 yards in 3-6 shots and minor elevation and windage adjustments.
Hi guys , Great gun I had one years ago but I had a situation where buck jumped out I shot and the time it took me to pump and find him in my sights he was gone. That happens quite often when adrenaline and excitement overtakes your mind😊 otherwise great “beater “ gun. Hope the weather turns soon we were 79* in Jersey today.
Hi Petar! Crazy things can happen when you have a big buck in front of you! It’s been wicked warm here...70 today. Hopefully it cools off soon. Take care!
10 years ago I had a 760 in 270. It was a very nice rifle. But I sold it for money cause at the time I cowboyed for a living. Now I have a 760 in 300 savage . Nice rifles
Nice video. I have a Remington Model 7600 in 270 . I bought it just before the price increases. I would love to find one in the 280.Rem. I did find a 760 in 308 but the guy wanted 850.00 saying I know what I have.
Thanks Clinton! Yes, I wish I would have bought one sooner. Crazy how the market is for those, they definitely have become popular. Good luck this fall!
Thank you ! I have 3 South Dakota tags and 1 Non Resident Nebraska anterless tag. I hope to fill them all. I plan on using my 7600 (270) & Sportsman 76 (3006).
The Remington 7400 .308 the poor man's M-14. I special ordered mine back in 2003. Ended up having to layaway it twice I was so poor. The triple k 10 round magazines cycle well added 20 gauge side fold stock. Next is a peep sight. Definitely a contender now. If all this fails I'll use the AR-10 for backup. *Additionally Id Love to have a 7600 carbine in .308.*
Nice rifle, reminds me of the Big Woods Bucks guys that are down in Maine (really enjoy their podcast) I had a Remington 30/06, 7600 and sold it, for a 270 BDL. Wish I had of kept it as I love those classic Remingtons. Enjoyed the video Regards Mark
It’s recommended to initially sight in a 270 in either 130 or 140 grain at 27 yards . Fire a 3 round group to dial it in, then check at 100 yard and adjust if needed
Nice setup Moe have one myself same caliber . Just gave it to my son this year and he did get a buck with it he was with me was I got it 30 years ago. He always wanted that gun so on his birthday I gave it to him. Where both happy
As a Mainer I've had a 7600P.308. 2X scope mounted via a cantilevered see-thru. Wilson Ghost ring with an Ashley white dot front. 16.75" barrel. A "real" Maine hunting rifle. Up-close or out to 200 yards+...deer.bear.moose '06 just as good if not better with heavies like 220 gr for moose or elk.
Iconic gun for hunting the big woods in the northeast. Hopefully Rem Arms will once again produce that model, with the price a used one commands it appears there's a market for them. Maybe someday you can put yours to the real test.
They are awesome rifles in my opinion. You might want to try a few different brands of ammo, I have a 7600 in .280 and it shoots best with the Remington core Lokts in 165 grain. I tried the Winchester and Federal brands as well but shot best with the Remington. Good luck and shoot straight!
Switched out the front sight to an orange fiber optic , then use red nail polish around outside appature, I also put a clear coat over nail polish, thanks to my wife
@@JC-sj2pd then my eyes are different because the red polish and orange fiber optics Doesn’t distract at all but actually brings everything together. A black rear sight and front post isn’t clear at all . Sometimes in lowlight you can’t make it out. But to each his own.
nice info bud. i love my 742 woodmaster, 30-06 and i'm like you i'm not going to spend thousands of dollars on a gun. just sighted it in tonight are season starts the 15th. thanks for sharing this with us.
7600 is a nice model gun. Has shot a lot of deer thruout the years between the Benoits and Hal that's for sure. How many yards do you think you would feel comfortable shooting at a deer with the peep site? Hope you had a good weekend up to camp. I didn't get into many deer up to camp I saw 6 does. Did some bird hunting a lot of the birds been shot around camp to I think but i got into a fair amount ha.
I’ve really enjoyed shooting that gun. Shoots well. I’d say I’d be comfortable at 100yrds max. We had a good time at camp...saw 4 deer. Nice to hear you were into some birds and deer! Hoping to get back out soon. Good luck!
Never got into pumps im from western Pennsylvania farmlands we can't use semi automatics for big game so they use to be popular here Im a bolt action guy and lever action but love the bolt action the best
Hi Warren! I definitely understand the advantage of a good bolt action when hunting open country. I know the local guys that hunt farms tend to lean toward bolts. Some make some pretty long shots pushing 500 yards. I wouldn’t be doing that with my semiautomatic 😂. Thanks for watching!
@@MaineOutdoorEnthusiast where I hunt most shots are 30 to 100yards the woods run from 50 to 500 acre blocks and its hilly woods with fields bordering them powderlines or fields you can get long shots but its hard to get on a bucks track and hunt him like yinz do in Maine and Vermont cuz you got so many different property's where its posted we pick are spots and sit all day
