  • An absolutely chaotic traveling day. I will always love Toronto but it is NOT at its best right now. Prices for rent are absolutely astronomical (and for what??), crime is up in many unexpected ways throughout the city and social services are definitely struggling to keep up with the new influx of immigration that Canada has had in the past few years. Come join me for a travel day vlog of traveling from Calgary to Toronto and also my first impressions of being back in the city! xx

As a Torontonian it is incredibly sad to see such a big increase in crime and homelessness. It used to be a very safe city and then slowly there was an uptick in crime and I would say in the last few years it has got out of control. It breaks my heart to see the deterioration of the downtown but I know this is a problem in many cities around the world. I would truly like the leadership of the city and province to be more engaged in trying to help resolve the problem. I do hope you have a safe and pleasant stay here

It bothers me when I hear small town people boast how safe their town is. Yes safe, because their mentally ill, their ex-cons descended on Toronto. Most of the homeless, criminals are not from Toronto. 50% of the TO pop. are from elsewhere.

Hi Alina! 2 years ago my wallet fell out of my pocket and I didn't realize it on Dundas St. near Jarvis. I went into a restaurant and in a few minutes realized it was gone and I went outside and retraced my steps but no go. Turns out that someone must have immediately picked it up on the sidewalk and kept walking east and saw a police cruiser and gave it to them. I had a piece of paper in there with my first name and my phone # on it. When I turned on my phone later there was a message from the cop. I called him and traveled to a specific precinct where I had to show my passport and they gave me my wallet back. It even had the money still in it. I lost it in a quasi-sketchy area too really so there are definitely a lot of honest people still in Toronto

I’m happy your wallet found its way back to you. Great shoutout to the Westjet staff that found your wallet and got in touch with you. There are good people in the world, and the concern over crime is a stark contrast. I haven’t lost a wallet but I did leave my cellphone behind while walking along the lakefront in Kingston, Ontario. A very nice lady from Ottawa picked it up and sent me an email that she found it. Overall, keeping things in perspective, Toronto is still a far safer city than most other cities of similar size. The drug trade has gotten a lot worse, and the pandemic made that worse. As for the prices, yeah, I’m faced with that too. I commute in to TO once a week and stay overnight, at my expense, and it’s a big bite. But that’s the cost of living here. Safe travels and thanks for sharing your views of the world in your travels.

Great outcome with your returned wallet - lost many which have mostly been recovered. Good to see your footage of Toronto - connects me with the memories and vibes of the place. Like the artsy look and feel of certain areas like Yorkville. Good street plantings.

Hi, my name is Erika but I'm writing from my husband's account. I lived in Toronto from 1976 to 1977. I was out with my friends and had a few bags to carry. I took a bus on Bathurst and left my purse with my wallet, ID etc. on the bus. I was frantic but we had no cell phones then. So, my friends and I waited at the bus stop, hoping that eventually the bus we took would return. Since we had no idea which bus we were on we asked every driver of each bus that stopped if a red purse was found. It was a NO for a looong time but after about an hour at that stop a bus pulled up and in the front window by the driver was my purse laying on the dash board. I couldn't believe it! It was amazing!! I've told that story many times and I know there are lots of good people everywhere. I'm sad to see that the crime has gone up quite a bit. I used to take the TTC and buses everywhere. I used to wait at stations all over the city, sometimes in the middle of the night and I was never scared. Such a shame but I guess that's the progress we witness pretty much everywhere in the world. Glad everything worked out well for you! I really enjoy your channel!

You showed us the CN Tower and the downtown waterfront in a live walking tour last year. The Toronto City Hall was a perfect ending to your episode. When I was there a quarter century ago, I never felt unsafe and its sad what crime has done to the city. Good to hear your lost wallet was found and the only inconvenience was you had to cancel all of your cards and its usually more like we forget where we put a personal possession. Can be embarrassing! 😝 As for your AirBNB in High Park, when I read your description, I thought who needs another generic hotel to book in? Variety keeps life interesting. In 2008, my wife and I were staying at a 5-star hotel downtown. After a day of shopping, we got off the subway close to the hotel and someone snatched my knapsack off my back and ran! I told my wife that I will be right back and ran after him, tackled him and knocked him down and casually retrieved my pack. I told him that I am not really a tourist but a Canadian who beat the bootcamp record for the mile and a half in Cornwallis Nova Scotia. It was an olympic time record and I even got an award for it. I suggested that he get into better shape if he wants to continue this activity. I don't know if he was armed but I would not attempt that today.

As I was walking along in the airport, quite a distance from the coffee shop, someone called out to me. It was the father of the family along with his son. He asked if I had lost my wallet. I checked my pocket and said yeah as he handed it over. I guess they saw me leaving from the table and amazingly were able to track me down. It was a happy ending and I particularly liked how the guy had brought his son along and showed him this is right way to do things. They were from NZ, I guess those kiwis are alright.

Toronto has never been my favourite city. I always found the people to be rough there. I never found people to be friendly. I am not surprised at seeing the crime level go up the way it has. But what I am surprised is to see the exorbitant cost of rentals. Many of my friends are moving out of Toronto because they just can’t afford it anymore. I live in Ottawa and Ottawa has seen the same kind of problems, but just not to the level of Toronto. It’s sad because Toronto was once upon a time a beautiful, culturally rich city but I feel it’s been tarnished by crime, homelessness, and the exorbitant cost of living.
Ps I love your videos Alina. It’s so nice to see you in familiar places like the Calgary airport, or even to see a Tim Hortons and dollarama in the background. As a traveler, I tend to miss these things so you have a new subscriber.😊😊

While downtown, did you talk a stroll past your old apartment and wistfully sigh about how much an entire apartment to rent was compared to the cost of just a room now? Pretty ridiculous prices. Probably all of these stressors in society today are contributing to the increase in random attacks; at some point people can just snap when it gets to be too much. Anyway, I still miss T.O. a lot even after not having lived there for so long and seeing these vids always makes me nostalgic for the city and the places you travel through 'cuz I was also there at one point or another too, whether just a handful of times or many. But, that pronunciation, though... 'Toe-ron-toe'...makes my ears wince.

The relief I felt in my heart the moment you said they found your wallet!! I'm so glad it worked out so well, what a relief, phew! ❤
(story time: I lost my wallet years ago and had no idea until I realized it 3 days later. Got all my bank cards cancelled, then reported missing ID and had to apply to get a new ID. The mug-shot for the new ID card looked awful cuz I had no idea they would take a new picture.. Anyway, 2 days later I went to pickup my new ID and as I was waiting next in line, I received a call... It was the local police, they said they found my wallet in a parking lot. Everything was there, all my cards and old ID were there, it was just the cash that got stolen. But till this day I'm pissed cuz they used the same photo when they issued my DL, and now I have to wait 10 years to change that god awful photo 😂 )

Oh wow, losing a wallet definitely feels like I've lost part of my soul. The one time I lost mine was abroad. It was my first time in Japan and I joined up a bar hopping tour. On the way to a night club to end the night, I had realized that I lost my wallet. I ended up breaking off from the group and the tour organizer had suggested that I go to the police. That was an experience itself and what little I knew of the language came in handy. I never got it back but it was easy to put a freeze on my credit card and put in a request for my new cards. Thankfully I was not carrying all of my cash and only lost about 5k yen.

Thanks to watching your walk and talk on Sunday, I was going, I know where she is, I recognize those businesses on your stroll to the subway station. Once you got downtown well numerous Canadian TV shows and news stories make those areas visually familiar, even though physically I've never been outside of Pearson Airport. The crime situation is a perfect example of how philosophy and reality can be totally different. The same politicians who implement the laws always are surprised when life doesn't conform to theory. Then like Doug they say this will not be allowed, and then don't change the system they created and it happens again and again, cue verbal outrage.
Enough negative, this was a nice little video of a smiling Alina just chilling as she shows Toronto the good.

Take photos or write a list of all your wallet cards and save it in the cloud (Google doc etc)

Hi Alina. I have followed several of your video journeys. For the huges amount of money that you rent a room for in Toronto you can rent a super deluxe villa with swimming pool and housekeeping in Asia. I'm a bit older and Asia is my destination to wear out my old age days and keep everything affordable understand that after all that traveling you want to be in a familiar environment with friends and family. Prices in Canada are through the roof. I am from Amsterdam and have also made many trips in Asia. I like Asia. The people, the climate, the food and the affordability stand out. This makes it difficult to return home permanently. Crime is everywhere, but fortunately I have never experienced it so bad in Asia. F

My wife and I left Toronto about four years ago. Even then, the crime increases, and generally higher costs for everything just made Toronto a place to leave. I have stopped using AirBnB altogether, at least in Canada. I don't think that it well end well for AirBnB hosts, particularly if they are depending on the fees to pay off mortgages on their rental properties. And without prejudice, I have to say that people have just become more anxious and stressed in Toronto. It is sad that this is the case.

Must be good to be ‘home’, even for such a traveler. Interesting to show Toronto’s metro system; quite a few people might think Canadian’s distance travel is by dogsled. Regarding using a mace type spray. Like anything it’s necessary to practice. Example; there are same sized small sprayers, mouth freshener products that are similar in size and thumb press activation. Imagine doing a ‘quick draw’ in a movie western. Get comfortable in finding it, getting thumb in place - up and right into the bad guy’s face -spray spray spray. No warning. Then kick your sandals off and run like hell. Find a clear area with the wind behind you and do real practice. Thumb pressure necessary, the range and spray pattern.
