ok as someone who grew up in a martial arts school and was primarily trained by women, i feel downright CHEATED by the mulan movie for not telling me that she learned martial arts growing up. the movie makes it seem like she didn't know anything and then learned from shang when that wasn't the case at all. mulan was a hero of mine growing up and it would've been so cool to know that she had studied growing up the same way i did.
When I was learning Chinese, my teacher told me a different version of the story basically the same but Mulan was Mongolian instead which is why she was trained in martial arts to begin with and that after the war her friends didn't go with her but one day visited and were only surprized that she hid it, this was because women were allowed to fight in the Mongolian army, in the animated Mulan you can see that Shan Yu is only surprised to see that Mulan is alive as opposed to Mulan being a Women
Thats because the animated movie is more meant to be about empowering girls and that they can do the same as men. So they have her train and grow with them. The live action makes her talented in martial arts from the start though.
