Awesome vid and the balancing portion I was mainly concerned about was not only presented well but worked perfectly! Keep on keepin' on an clear skies...
Thanks you guys for making this video. It is for the beginner for sure. I see that you are just "eyeballing" polar alignment. With the awesome images you produce, I was under the impression you went to great lengths to polar align. My mount (CGEM DX) did not come with an illuminated polar alignment scope). So I think this might be my next purchase. It seems so easy this way.
Thanks Tim, yep, we just "eyeball" the polar alignment, as long as the coordinates are set correclty, it's just a matter of rotating the mount left and right, which is why we often achieve perfect polar alignment without any fancy method :)
I have the Atlas mount but I polar align a different way. I just put Polaris in the circle outline exactly where it needs to go. Then I switch the mount on and go through the 3 star alignment. I use SynscanInit app. I also use a light 80mm scope.
I have the exact same setup except no guiding scope. I set up my telescope today after not touching it for a couple years and forgot a few things. Good refresher on the basics of proper setup
You guys were great. I have exactly the same equipment except that I have a Sirius Mount instead of the Atlas. And I just bought a polar scope as it looked easy to use and affordable. Well done and thanks!
Just like to comment that traditionally you need to balance in Dec. first on an Equatorial mount. This is so that the center of gravity on the declination axis does not interrupt or introduce an offset center of gravity to the RA axis. In simple terms, if your DEC is not balanced before RA, when your OTA is at roughly 45 degrees in RA-axis there is a severe imbalance. It may also be worth noting that the vast majority of mount manufacturers highlight the importance of balancing the dec. axis before RA in their manuals and documentation. I know this is also somewhat of a topic of debate but I experience this effect with my setup and absolutely need to balance on Dec first.
How does matching the Big Dipper and Cassiopeia help with polar alignment? I thought it was all about placing polaris in the right spot on the circle surrounding the NCP? It seems to me what you were doing has more to do with the orientation of the reticle in the polar scope than aligning the RA with the NCP. Can you elaborate or clear that up for me? I'm hoping to have my first night with an equatorial mount tonight and am very much hoping to not have large gaps in my understanding. Thanks for any help you can offer. I love these videos, by the way.
Hello, matching Cassiopeia and Ursa Major's orientation is important as rotating the axis will turn not just the constellations but also the little circle in which Polaris will have to go.
We had a little problem for the next target, which we will explain in Episode 7, but we are working hard on it to have it ready as soon as we can! The next video will for sure be the 15 best targets of Fall, since it is almost the end of Summer :)
Would of been good if you could of said about making sure the polar scope is aligned because it don’t matter how aligned the scope is to Polaris it’s not going to be great if the polar scope isn’t aligned
Would be better without the artsy in-focus/out-of-focus pulls. I'm trying to look at the names on some equipment and there's never a shot that's in focus.
Ca ne peut pas mieux tomber ;);) !!! je débute !! merci pour la vidéo et sa qualité, comme d'habitude !! J'ai cependant bien cru que le papillon de nuit allait tout gâcher... outchhhh ;);););)
Hi guys! One question: how do you safely install the telescope when it's just one of you? I'm struggling to understand how to attach it with the dovetail while holding it and at the same time having to tight the bolts.. unless you always tilt the head mount horizontally
Looks like a set of Bob's Knobs are in order for your secondary alignment 😬 (thats if you haven't already bought them since this video was made a while ago)
Hey guys. I was just wondering if you guys have come across an issue with your synscan 4 controller. If you slew to a target, and then go to the show position option in the menus, does it does your RA and Dec changing while it's tracking? It shouldn't. The mount's position should always match the RA and Dec of the inject in the sky. I can watch mine change by an arc second every 20 to 40 seconds. Have you seen any problems like that on yours?
We are simply using a luggage for the mount and one for the telescope, protected by a pillow.. we'd love to get pelican cases but they are pretty pricy.
Hi I have a couple of questions about polar alignment... so you loosen the tension bar between the legs to the mount before polar alignment? Then you tighten it back up after polar aligning? Wouldn’t that throw off the alignment?? Thanks
We loosen it a little bit because if we keep it too tight, we are unable to rotate it using the two little knobs. It would throw off the alignment if you loosen it too much, but in this case, it is just to "unlock" the too littles knobs.
After you polar align with the big dipper in the right spot in the reticle, do you then tighten the screws for ascension and declinaton? And do you then do a second two star or three star alignment which comes up in the menu of the SynScan hand controller?
Do you have a camera you would recommend, we are looking to purchase one but really not sure which to purchase due to mega pixels any help would be appreciated we have the same scope as you have and we are new to this hobby ,thanks again love your videos!
Hello Shirley! Our first camera was the fairly cheap Canon t3i (you can see a bunch of our pictures on our website gallery that were taken with that camera. We also used that camera from Episode 1 through 4). We now use the 7D Mk II which is a pretty good improvement. You may also want to look into the t6i which is also a great one for astrophoto :)
Awesome video thanks for posting we just recently purchased the newtonian 10 inch but having trouble getting it to balance any suggestions would be help full
Hi Shirley and thank you! If you are not able to balance your telescope/mount when doing it exactly like we show in the video, you might first need to "rotate" the telescope optical tube a little bit from inside the tube rings, as the weight of the telescope itself is not 100% evenly distributed. Try rotating it a few different times until the balance is achieved :)
STOP putting background music to videos with *narration* .. it ONLY makes it HARDER to hear what you are saying and is VERY distracting ... EVERYONE STOP DOING THIS.. we are NOT here to listen to music !!
Thanks for all your great videos. Very glad the screams were just for a moth....at first I thought you had knocked over your scope!
Superb cool telescope 🔭❤️ dear, thank you for informational video... Fully enjoyed 😀💖🎁🎁🎁🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
That moth scared the life out of me!
I have done polar alignment for a long time but your video helped me to do it better by moving the mount itself instead of the whole setup. Thank you!
Great video, my telescope isn't as nice as yours but this video helped me a lot!! Thank you!
Awesome vid and the balancing portion I was mainly concerned about was not only presented well but worked perfectly! Keep on keepin' on an clear skies...
That is awesome to hear Thomas, we're very happy it could help, thanks :)

Simple, clair, ludique et efficace.
Excellente vidéo comme toujours !
Merci Romain!

Honestly loved your video. Keep going on guys ... nicely done and well presented !!! hats off

Nice and an informative video! I just bought the same telescope, so this was an useful tutorial for me. Thanks.

Quel plaisir de vous revoir !!!
Wow. Lots of work. I have a nexstar. Look at all the fun I’m missing!!
Very nice and useful video :-)
Just one thing...in step one...I'd add to set the mount on bubble level.
Clear skies
You are completely right! Such a common sense step but it could make all the difference!

wow very nice guide! :D thanks! :D
Thank you for your kind words :D
Aaahhh youre back!
I'm guessing the next target is close to come? :)

Merci, plaisir que ca aide :) La video sera sur la chaine Francaise sous peu pour nos amis Francophones :)

move the ota rings together a dit closer and you will achieve better balance
Netty Voyager the rings on the OTA are attached to the dove tail. You can’t move the rings closer because there fixed to the dovetail.

Maybe edit the screaming etc from the video...
What type of case are you using for your OTA? Did you use a travel case with foam interior for the EQ mount? Thanks!
We are simply using a luggage for the mount and one for the telescope, protected by a pillow.. we'd love to get pelican cases but they are pretty pricy.

Galactic Hunter thanks a lot I will try this out...
That moth scared the crap out of me. OMG. She screamed like a scary movie.
After you polar align with the big dipper in the right spot in the reticle, do you then tighten the screws for ascension and declinaton? And do you then do a second two star or three star alignment which comes up in the menu of the SynScan hand controller?
After you get Polaris in the right spot do you put the scope back into home position or leave it as is?
Polar alignment is quite a pain 😒
Is the moth now dead?
No... it came back a few more times...
i need guiding camera for tracking?
You can track the sky with just the motorized mount, but a guiding camera will allow you to track it perfectly and for much longer.
Galactic Hunter motor you attach to mount is that litle box with wire?
The motor is located where all the mount plugs are, you can see the "on/off" red button
Galactic Hunter ok i see, thanks for helping
Great Video! I have an AVX Mount with a Celestron 8SE OTA, use Star Sense and waiting for PolarMaster to arrive in the mail...any suggestions/tips....
Hi Mike, we are pretty old school so we do not use Star Sense and Polemaster :/
okiedok...im a newbie so it works for me..love your videos thanks and keep up the good work!

Is it possible to polar align near the equator?
Do you have a camera you would recommend, we are looking to purchase one but really not sure which to purchase due to mega pixels any help would be appreciated we have the same scope as you have and we are new to this hobby ,thanks again love your videos!

Sorry that im asking again but i cant open youtube when you answear. Soo what camera do you recomend for my first astrophotography
Ours was the Canon t3i, it is pretty cheap and gives great results.
Galactic Hunter ok thanks
Galactic Hunter last question, i need to polar align telescope if i want visual observations?
You don't "have" to, but... Yes, you should always polar align your telescope before using it!
Galactic Hunter okay ill do polar align every time, thanks
Awesome video thanks for posting we just recently purchased the newtonian 10 inch but having trouble getting it to balance any suggestions would be help full

Galactic Hunter ,thank you we actually figured it out shortly after watching your video thank u so much !
Big scare with the moth. Thought the scope had tipped & crashed!
What’s lazer alignment thing called? Thanks!
laser collimator?
@@GalacticHunter Oo yes that! Sorry I’m a
Noob 😂🙈
Do the moth again!
I thought bigfoot attacked
a good tip... do not use any thing electric...nothing you don't need it. learn the sky.
