The Fifth Dimension was the real deal. Marilynn McCoo was the lead female singer and her husband Billy Davis Jr was the male lead vocalist. This group of 5 gifted singers brought a combination of pop, folk and soul into the music. Highly recommend listening to "Last Night I Didn't Get to Sleep", "Stone Soul Picnic", "Wedding Bell Blues", "California Soul" and their signature song "Aquarius/ Let the Sunshine In". In the late 60s/ early 70s they commanded every television variety show of the day. Don't hesitate checking out their live performances. They brought the choreo!
Her husband Billy is standing right next to her in the Soul Train video of them performing this song ,many should see ,and they have now been married for 54,55 years now ,are in their 80’s. 🎉.
So true the artist of today would not dare be able to sing on a stage or anywhere else not knowing how to sing . It would turn anywhere into an Apollo situation anywhere where you will be booed snd things thrown at up, removed from the stage.
Hadn't heard this song in years, and got curious. Both Davis and McCoo are still alive and have now been together for 53 years. He is 85 years old and she is 80. And they still perform at select venues. Amazing.
The 5th Dimension had so many great hits in the 60's-70's such as "Go Where You Wanna Go", "Up, Up & Away", "Medley: Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In", "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Sweet Blindness", "Wedding Bell Blues", "California Soul", "Workin' On A Groovy Thing", "Never My Love", "(Last Night) I Didn't Get To Sleep at All", "If I Could Reach You", "Love's Lines, Angles & Rhymes", "Living Together, Growing Together" etc.
I know there are more of their great songs that should be on your list. One of my favorite songs by The 5th Dimension is "Ashes to Ashes". Some of the lyrics in their songs touch real emotions that I have.
Singing is so much more than merely producing the correct notes. Very few singers can reach down into their very soul and make others feel what they are feeling. Marilyn McCoo had that ability and also had one of the most technically flawless vocal chords. She brings tears to our eyes.
this takes me back to a time where music was so good here the 5th dimension don't talk about much they were a great group for the 60's and 70's and 80's they music is timeless that time was so special that why i miss the eighties i know people degrees special they were born then you don't know unless your family tells you but i haven't heard this song in long time.
Marilyn McCoo is the singer and fellow group member and co lead singer Billy Davis are husband and wife! They are still performing together to this day after 50 plus years of marriage, still sounding and looking fabulous!
It was so cute the way my little brother always responded to this song! Shaking his head like he had really been through some things at the age of 5 or 6!!😂😂😂
Another beautiful old school classic! Loved your reaction Ashley. And your comments were on point. The quality and depth of music from the 60's and 70's is absolutely amazing! I'm really enjoying your journey.
Ashley, thank you for recognizing the harmony & musicality of this song and other "classic era" music! That lead singer (Marilyn McCoo) is married to the male lead singer in the group (Billy Davis Jr.). At some point the couple left to make songs as a (duo). I'm proud to say that the replacement for Billy Davis Jr. was none other than my 1st cousin (Danny Beard), who did a great for them for a "few" years, until tragically he died in a hotel fire....Anyway, Good reaction!
This is such a great reaction, Ashley. You nailed it precisely in every way. That is Marilyn McCoo who is married to a member of the group, Billy Davis, Jr. For 53 years, they have been married, I am reading. The video is a treat to watch as well as all of the hits. Thank you 😊.
Would have preferred you reacted to a video of them performing....this group hands down has to be one of the greatest of all time when it came to harmonizing....led by Marylyn McCoo...from like 1968 to 1970 they were one of the top selling artists in the world ....they were groundbreakers and made black folks proud of how they represented themselves with CLASS.... I know RUclips has made it extremely difficult to show these videos Here is a link so you can watch this group on you own....they are GOAT status and had so many hits ruclips.net/video/jqmS29CXNZ8/видео.htmlfeature=shared
Hey babygirl👋! I am 62 sweetheart and one thing is for sure with my generation, music saved our life... With all the bad things that went on in the 60s 70s and 80s, music was all we had... I'm so happy that you are enjoying the same things that brought us joy in this crazy world ❤..
Ashley, you have become a Music Connoisseur! Someone once said, "In every note, every rhythm, and every melody, the power of music echoes. Your journey becomes a magical composition of emotions and experiences". You're doing exceptionally well!
I always thought that if they had done a Biopic of Marilyn McCoo back in the 90's, they could've used Denise Matthews ("Vanity".... RIP). Very Similar Looks and Singing voices. Other GREAT 5th Dimension songs are "Age of Aquarius", Up up and Away" and so many others. Marilyn sang quite a few songs about her Man, Fellow 5th dimension Singer, Billy Davis Jr. A Couple were "the Wedding Bell Blues" and "I didn't get to sleep at night".
I agree. Vanity had the looks; for sure. But, that’s where the similarities end. Vocally?!?: she absolutely could not compete with Marilyn McCoo. Ever.
It's Marylin McCoo, one of the best female lead vocalists of her era (or any era), and she also looked like a Supermodel. I could be wrong, but I think she was a beauty contest winner prior to becoming a star, and make no mistake about it, The Fifth Dimension was a hit making machine in their era.
Marilyn McCoo and fellow lead singer and husband Billy Davis Jnr. had a big hit with 'You Don't Have To Be a Star (To Be In My Show) after 5th Dimension split. They also recorded the original 'Saving All My Love For You', a cover of which earned Whitney Houston her first #1 and first Grammy.
As a teenager Deployed Overseas during the 70's this is the type music that brought a sense of calmness during sone hectic times for us youngins so far away from home. And yes kept us homesick!! 😂 Shout out to the 86th Tactical Fighter Wing!! afsc 1-65130 #MilitaryLife🇺🇲Hooah 💪
Listen!...the 70's had their share of problems, Watergate, gas shortages, hostage situations, airplane hijackings, blackouts etc. But the music of the 70's was the soothing elixir that helped us cope with the world's issues.
It makes me happy to see so many of the younger generation, exploring the older music from my day. I don’t think I appreciated it enough when I was living through it. The fifth dimension has many great hits as commenters before me have listed. I think my favorite though is Up, Up and Away. When I was in elementary school, the local high school put on a talent show at the end of every year, and one of the acts was of that song. They had built a papier-mâché balloon that actually lifted off from the stage (mechanically, not with hot air, lol) with patchwork colored balloon and 57 years later I still remember it fondly!
Fun trivia: Ashley, if you ever watch reruns of "The Jamie Foxx Show", you will see (5th Dimension lead singers/married couple Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr.) as the parents of Jamie's love interest on the show "Fancy" (played by Garcelle Beauvais).
@Ashley Reacts! This is the absolute epitome of "Champagne Soul"! I suggest for your next song from this fantastic group, "Age Of Aquarius (The Flesh Failures)" music video! You will not be disappointed! Love, Peace & Blessings!!!
This song was the Fifth Dimension's biggest hit song of the 1970s. The song did peaked at the #2 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during the late fall of 1970. This beautiful, awesome song is a definite love song indeed!!!
The 5th Dimension was one of the top pop groups in the 70s. I grew up admiring them and loving their music. I just take for granted that everyone knew who they were so it's weird and fabulous to me that you've never heard of them. Please, please take a deep dive into their music. You will be astounded. ❤
That is a phenomenon that I also experienced. First I notice that nobody (youngsters) criticized The 5th Dimension as 'old folks' music. I know I never heard any disparaging comments in school. I was in the sixth grade when this was released.
The 5th Dimension were some of the pioneers of the Los Angeles soul movement. Most R&B acts in the late 50’s and early 60’s came out of the Midwest, South and East Coast. Very interesting and cool sound🎼
The 5th Dimension have songs that reach deep into my personal emotions. I was in the sixth grade when this song was released. The phenomenon I experienced is - I clearly knew and understood what she was singing about. "Ashes to Ashes" by The 5th Dimension is a song that increased my feeling of loss exponentially since it was released (1973). Every one of the songs on their Greatest Hits album triggers an eclectic spectrum of emotions. Their contribution of music to the world is equal to any considered to be among the best. Ashley, you hit it on the mark!! Today's generation is simply missing out on some great written... well sung music... I'm 66 yrs old and I grew up listening to some of the greatest music ever... I wouldn't change it for the world!
You are a lovely young lady. I love your energy and your outlook. Keep spreading Love through this great music to your generation. Merry Christmas Baby! 🙂
I can't help but wonder what she would think of this song knowing that the emotion obvious in this performance was really performance. Her husband was in the studio with her when she recorded it and was the leader of the group.
This is one of my favorite 5th Dimension song, because i love the way Marylin McCoo sing this song, and I'll like to make another suggestion, check out the Isley Brothers " Sensuality"

Just think about what we have to deal with when we have to do the upkeep to your car. Its about doing what you do because of your love for each other. Non of us perfect. But we can end making each other better people.
This song brought tears to my eyes when I found out the night before Saturday, at the time in 1995, I lost a girl who got engaged to someone else and it ripped me apart inside. The chorus finally got to me and I broke down in tears. I didn't want to talk to anybody after that. I was hurt and angry.

Yeah, its not like artists dont' have talent these days its just that the industry manufactures "products" based on perceived "customer" likes. Same with movies. Blame the industry ... in the old days producers where people like yourself, who love unique ness.... hopefully its coming back.
Please.... I want to hear you react to how the song was sung, her voice, the harmony, the music....not hear you rant about what she sings about and your distaste for most men. There was another person reacting to this same song saying....."If he doesn't want you, I'm here, baby!" SO STUPID. The Fifth Dimension was iconic in their time. Though, in those years, the radio was flooded by music of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Beach Boys, Doors, CCC, Supremes, Jackson 5, Temptations, they still delivered great music And even though they were only together for 10 years, they had 2 Number 1 hits & 20 Top 40 hits. 6 time Grammy award winners. Marilyn McCoo hosted a TV music show SOLID GOLD for 5 years. She and her husband, Billy Davis Jr. (also a member of the Fifth Dimension) have been married for 55 years and also had their own show. They also won a Grammy together.
Honey, music pretty much ended in this country several decades ago, and you're just living in the ruins, that's why you hear music and think, why don't we have this? I am 68 years old, and I feel sorry for you guys. We had GREAT music, and that's not just some old guy telling you he likes the music he grew up with. I'm telling you, music per se is over. All we have now is the same musical phrases repeated endlessly as if that is music. But because it's all you've ever heard, when you hear actual music you are surprised.

She could sing the cereal box ingredients and id be a deer in the headlights
Facts I was gonna say the same thing
Chaka khan was asked what was missing with today's so called music ....her answer....talent.
I watched that interview also.
Chaka Khan certainly gets straight to the point.

The melody and chord changes in this tune are very complex, most pop singers wouldn't even attempt it. But McCoo absolutely kills it.

This song brought tears to my eyes when I found out the night before Saturday, at the time in 1995, I lost a girl who got engaged to someone else and it ripped me apart inside. The chorus finally got to me and I broke down in tears. I didn't want to talk to anybody after that. I was hurt and angry.

It's just a song that she is covering. It's not her story but the 5th dimensions made it popular. Burt Bacharach wrote the song for Keely Smith who is a fabulous singer but no one has ever sang it so well as Marilyn McCoo
