Thanks a lot man. Broke a handle and was considering buying a new axe. Never thought the process to replace the handle would be so straightforward.

Exactly what I needed to know. Thanks again! I just bought on old double edge at a garage sale for $5.00! I asked the guy, "Are you sure you want to sell this?" He said, "Yes, he just bought a new one."

Can I add weight to my ax head by using a piece of heavier metal instead of a wedge.. bc I am a chic and I chop better with a heavier ax I use less energy and get a better bust. I hope I can thank you buzzybee

I don’t see why not, my concern with a metal wedge would be shock absorption and may cause the wood of your handle to split. You may want to look at changing the angle of your sharpened edge to require less force to split/chop. It may dull faster, but it would require less energy per cut. The efficiency of the axe is based on the balance between weight and cutting edge. Also playing with the length of your handle can change the force needed to get a good cut.

what should i do if the handle is too tight of a fit. sand it down?

    • @wildmanknowhow6617

It really depends on how tight. I would say start with mid grit sand paper or possibly a light file if it just barely too tight. If you need to remove a lot of material, trace the inside of the axe head on the handle and use a wood chisel, or draw knife. Only remove a little material at a time until it fits. You can always take more off but you can't put it back on. Also make sure your remove material evenly on either side so the axe stays centered on the handle and not turned one way or the other. Hope this help. Thanks for your question and for watching.

@@wildmanknowhow6617 Its probably a rare question. And I think I know why now... This handle is for a garden mattock not an axe. I thought it was a bit long i thought that was cool. Its a close fit but i think Id have to remove too much material and possible weaken the integrity. Id hate to have it snap after the first swing. TBC...

@@millertime3591 Got ya. Yeah it will probably be easiest to get the right handle. If your unsure just take the axe head to the store with you and try a few handles on. It should slide on the top half of the handle pretty easy.
