The 12-toner is what we're all used to, because it's western. And let's be real, people are either westerners, or greatly influenced by westerners. But that isn't the only music scale, there's infinite pitches, and infinite possibilities. Some well known scales that aren't the standard western 12 are cultural turkish music, and some ancient chinese music. But that doesn't mean microtonal can't be used by westerners, it absolutely can! Take the lumatone for example. It sounds like a piano by default, is modern, and made by a westerners. But it is still microtonal. Microtonal music is something I find really interesting but I haven't come across very much of it. I don't know if you've heard it already or whether or not it'll be to your tastes, but one microtonal song I am familiar with is Spiral Staircase by Patricia Taxxon. Described as a "microtonal pop song", one thing I find interesting is how it switches back and forth between parts that stick to the western scale, and parts which deviate from it, creating a sort of contrast between the familiar and the alien (which, considering the song seems to be about a romance between a human and a robot, is probably intentional).
