Sgt. Keene, you have my profound respect and thanks for your service. Every time I hear another story about how our Vietnam veterans were treated when they returned home, I am horrified. Our government failed our veterans in terms of failing to help them re-acclimate and get the help they need with post-war trauma. I am very proud of you and your fellow veterans. 🇺🇸

Thank you for your service. I have watched a couple of your interviews and love listening to them. My grandfather was in World War I and he was gassed but he survived and came home. All of the young people should watch these interviews because it would make them appreciate their freedom and respect all of our veterans.

My Uncle said marijuana grew there in certain places and so it was very widespread, cheap and easily bought off locals. I heard one officer on this channel saying he let his men smoke mj but not drink. All my respect to Veterans protecting our freedoms.
Thank you for your service. My brother served in the 11th Armored Cav during the Viet Nam conflict. I was too young as the draft ended during my last year in High School. God bless all the men and boys who served and the women too.

Without taking away from the horrors of war and combat there's almost a romantic ambience with many of the stories. I love collecting photos from all my Veterans when I interview them. I've watched 100 or so Vietnam Veteran interviews and studied this war for 15 yrs; this interview is the best I've seen. Welcome home, Mr. Keene. Mad total respect for this man. Our fighting men from that era are the best we ever had. Treasonous Hollyweird, media, hippies treated our Vietnam soldiers like total sh##. But through all that abuse, our men remained loyal and true. Your effort there was not in vain; evil Communism never went further. You brave men halted Communism. I had family and friends that served in Viet Nam. Some came home, some did not.
I have an uncle that was there 69 - 69 in the LRRP's, he and I are very close and he has told me a lot.

Our Brave Soldiers never lost anything in Vietnam, they fought and NEVER lost a battle. Politicians and political generals lost the war as they did Afghanistan!
World War 2 our Nation's survival was at risk! Vietnam and Afghanistan it was not! Vietnam had all the anti war becaue we had a draft and the rich college kids did not want to be drafted and sent to the war. Afghanistan went for 20 years because we did not have a draft, we had a volunteer military! The volunteer military allows politicians to play war more easily! Bring back the draft and these foreign adventures would be not as easy for Politicians to get our kids into!
Out soldiers in Vietnam and Afghanistan did NOT lose those two wars!! Also studies were done that showed the Vietnam War soldiers were actually under more constant combat over the full year than the soldiers in WWII.
The Politicians who would not let us take the war to the enemy in his sanctuaries is why we did not win! NO more wars unless a Declaration of War as Constitution requires, especially as the Politicians are now pushing us into WWIII with Russia over Ukraine and potential Nuclear war and the destruction fo ALL mankind!

My dad was in the Marines. One brother was in the Coast Guard and another in the Air Force. However, none of them went to war. My grandfather served in WW2, was a prisoner of war for some time and still had shrapnel in his leg which caused a wound that never healed. A wound that never heals might be a good analogy for anyone who has gone to war? I don’t know. I’ve been educating myself about Vietnam and watching a lot of these interviews. It just breaks my heart that there wasn’t a heroes welcome for these Vietnam Vets. I wish I could hug every single one and tell them thank you for what you did. I fault no one for anyway they needed to cope. It sounds absolutely unimaginable. Thanks to Voices of History for making these available for all the future generations so they can know the sacrifices these vets made. Thank you Sgt Keene for your service. ❤ Your honesty and candidness is much appreciated as well.

PS -I remember in Ranger School i was sitting in the hell hole of the Huey with the M60 MG and doors open. And we were flying high altitude to get over the Tenn Mountain divide. I only had a few inches under my butt because of my rucksack and held on to the guy next to me in event I slid out!! The wind kept hitting the MG and trying to push it to rear of aircraft and me out!!! We were not belted in :) So can relate to him being pushed out of the Huey!! :)

So much propaganda from our government of things that is not true.
I was refused enlistment as a Navy/ USMC corpsman. I have always felt bitter about it. I respect every veteran of any war and wish I had been able to help those men and women. And, thank you, Larry

I'm glad to hear that you got back safely. I was at fort Carson Colorado with the 4th combat engineers. I was supposed to be a mechanic but when we were out in the field I had the M60. That was in 1982. In 83 the Grenada conflict came up and they had us lined up for departure on a alert most of us were happy that we didn't have to go, I hope you still believe in God if somebody gives their complete life to him then he says he will be their God. There are a lot of religious people that claim they are Christians that yet they still do things they know are sinful. The Bible teaches us that we need to depart from iniquity. 1st John 3:8 says that he that commits a sin is of the devil. Your memory will not pass away of all the things that have happened however if one gets saved and gives their life completely to Jesus Jesus will help you. And he will take away your guilt. If you don't know about Sergeant York you might want to read about him. I actually saw a picture of him and my father is 82nd airborne yearbook. He was a soldier through the first world war. He was a a Christian before he went into the war and afterwards as well.

My father started in the 101 first Airborne. Then went to the 82nd Airborne. He was a Ranger and a Green Beret. He did multiple tours in Vietnam.His name is Bob Leigh. It changed him forever. When he died 5 years ago I found lots of Polaroid pictures of dead VC and NVA. I still have them. As a teenager (14 years old) I couldn't understand why he was so mean when he drank. I'm starting to understand. Thank you for your documentaries. That war didn't just affect the soldier, it affected the families too.

Growing up in the shadows of these bad asses really made a positive impact on how managed my life. No matter what you do, they know how to live trough it. Their stone apes was the booger here in the states and the shit that rubbed off on me helped me trough all of it.
The common street light was called a "BOOGER LIGHT". The question is not are they real, but why is it so important that you do not know about the Beast that was mentioned in the bible. Man And Beast makes more since than anything else. God is amazing, it is man who messes up the natural order of things.
Interesting… I believe this was the same outfit that fought in the Ia Drang in ‘65. Sounds like his service was after that battle.

The "white powder" the little Vietnamese kids were trying to sell probably was a form of Heroin.
Poppy plants being indigenous to some Asian countries, Heroin is probably what the "white powder" was.
There are multiple different ways to "make" heroin from the Poppy plants...
It was the 60's. Yes there was pot being used. Other drugs and alcohol too. It was a stressful situation to be in. Millions of people do it every day. I call it a "mind vacation". A break from reality.
Thanks for your Service. I had made a mistake also by not bringing home some weapons. More afraid of getting caught. Had a friend go back to Hawaii on R&R. He managed to get back to the US and then go kill his wife and her friend. He never came back to Nam. I flew back thru Dover AFB. No protesters when we arrived. As you say keep your nose clean. Good Interview. Go to the Wall, I went several times. Been back to Nam twice, 2015 and 2019. Plan to go back one more time.
I`ve been listening to Nam vets` interviews for years and years and I`ve always wanted to ask,and forgive me if this is a stupid question,but is the Ho-Chi-Minh Trail still a viable trail,is it still used or has it been left to history and a forgotten piece of Vietnam?Are there markers to signify where it was and have any of the GIs been back to walk it,etc.?Thanks for these interviews.......Steve M.,Brooklin,ME
When I flew over Nam , on my way to Indonesia to go surfing, the pilot told us to look down at the Ho chi min trail. It was huge road. Looks well traveled. Still there. Huge.
