Bad ass exercise man! Definitely gonna jump into this one. I remember first hearing you on some bootlegs with John Escreet, Colin Stranahan and Ben Van Gelder. You're awesome! Glad your putting some RUclips content up
@@PhilDonkin80 Now that I'm thinking about it, I remember there was a cool version of 26-2 you guys played. You were playing it in 5 but then you guys superimposed the 7 over it. Do a video on that!! Cheers
i'm playing the 1 in every bar. It's only the cymbal pattern that's moving around. Is that what you meant? I might upload a video of just the audio of the cymbal pattern hopefully with a picture when you can see what the cymbal is doing. Maybe that helps
@@PhilDonkin80 I was thinking like the bit you played at 39 secs. I'm pretty sure if I was trying to improvise like that I'd come out of it crossing the beat!
hmm...lots of people are saying they can't hear this and others don't seem to have a problem. On my computer and phone it's totally fine. Perhaps you generally listen to things at high volumes and this seems very quiet in comparison? I don't know. Anyway...this is kind of what it is. In future videos I'll certainly make them louder
@@PhilDonkin80 I have to agree the volume on most of your videos is low, especially if you A/B with other YT videos. Some compression on the audio before you post could help get your levels up. I absolutely love the stuff you are putting out, very inspiring!
From your prespective, could you give me advice? How does the bass player interact with the drummer? Do you play the same time he kicks? Or its just feel?
dawg your drummers must be so happy that you can hold yourself together over this crazy shit lmao
That's why Phil got a gig at Small's N.Y. with Ari Hoenig.
This makes my brain hurt...I get the concept but it’s still tricky to follow on real time. Very impressive stuff, man.
My favorite part is bars 9-12 of the form. Having the ride cymbal on the 2nd and 3rd triplet of each beat makes a pretty cool groove.
wish i had an upright, can't afford one so i have to settle with watching videos
Great pfp bro
@@aixide thanks, i like yours too. MOTFD and Midori both kick ass!
You need to hear the cymbal pattern for this to make sense. Nice feel

thanks man! Wow yeah that's going back a while. Stay tuned for more content!

How is it so whimsical, yet brainmeltingly intense x) love it man fair play
I LOVE practice challenges like these!! Thank you so much for sharing!
Glad you like them!
My brain would actually struggle to know what to do like jesus.
Nailed it. Great idea for practice
man you make me want to play upright again.
Hurts my head. Makes it feel like you're not on beat.
Edit: I now understand what the exercise is
This is sick
Hey! Love your tone and the exercise too, do you have the play along?
I'll upload it soon!
Any tips on how to 'know where the 1 is' Phil? Also, have you checked out Ari Hoenig's polyrhythms book? There's some intense stuff it that!

@@Steviec63 ah ok. Well everything I'm doing is off the triplet grid. It does help when you know what the cymbal is doing. I'll get a video up soon
Nice Mingus shirt!
Fucking hell thats so sick
Is this the thing from that Adam Neely video? Great job by the way!
i don't know the adam neely video so I'm not sure. Thanks!
Nice groove !
Well done bassist, drummer didn't help in places, bass held it well
... I suddenly feel the need to play Godhand...
great stuff! what are you app are you using for the drums?
I'm not sure but I think it might be a track from the app drumgenius
Hi - I programmed it myself. Just the cymbal pattern displaced.
@@PhilDonkin80 Thank You!
come on man. we shouldn't have to turn our volume levels up to 11 and still not be able to hear it

@@PhilDonkin80 You can make it be loud enough but it's just way quieter than the average.

Volume is way too low
@@PhilDonkin80 What are you using to record the audio- is it just the camera mic?
extremely killin
From your prespective, could you give me advice? How does the bass player interact with the drummer? Do you play the same time he kicks? Or its just feel?
No in this exercise I'm just playing time and the cymbal pattern is displacing by a triplet every 4 bars.
@@PhilDonkin80 thank you👌
hey this guy looks like ant man
Hey phil. What is the goal on this exercise?
to be able to feel 1st 2nd and 3rd triplets equally strongly so you don't get thrown when the drummer displaces the beat.
Backing track bruz? Pls
Oh thought it was silent movie nvm
Any chance that track is accessible?
maybe i can just upload the audio for it here
@@PhilDonkin80 that'd be great. It's a cool exercise, and nice to have something more of a jazz setting than a metronome.
Dope
This is so confusing
Why no audio?
turn it up to 11
i du no man
Do you have a backing track by any chance?
