  • Phil Silvers (SGT Bilko) being interviewed by Joan Bakewell on the Late Night Show, BBC 2 on the 1st of May 1967 (show 1092). This show was the last in the BBC2 line up for the day...and could last as long as guests wished to speak. About 2.5 minutes of this show are currently shown on RUclips, and this 15 minute long footage adds something to this, and gives further insight into the great character that was Phil Silvers (1911-1985). In this interview Mr Silvers shows a clear love for all that is British, and this is about his earliest long interview this side of the atlantic. A little of an episode follows to remind us of how distinctive the character and genius of Bilko was.The film has 16mm seperate mag sound, so is projected onto a Steenbeck that can reproduce this form of sound tape, sorry for the subsequent poor visuals that go with this.

Superb piece of footage. The irony is that the modern BBC has every reality show, 1,000s of episodes of 'Eastenders' and other trash but wiped or never thought to keep the first true decade of it's Golden Age. Thanks

Gratitude from here, great gratitude. But I bet you know more and are hiding it from us? Well, we'll find out!

It's a shame Phil didn't chime as well with the Carry On audience (or the cast if accounts are to be believed), personally I thought he slotted in perfectly, I'd even go as far as saying he gave me the biggest laughs of the movie which isn't bad given I'm a. English, b. a die-hard Carry On fan and c. not particularly into Bilko
