You can't do bga soldering without expensive hot air machine, stencils and etc. Sorin: hold my beer 😂
The drag solder with sorins thin liquid on both the chip and board works. It’s like half a ball on one side and the other half on the board ❤
@@EarthSouthsideDon’t think he was disputing that. He was calling Sorin a legend for doing so.
@@perkulant4629 Don’t think he was disputing that. He was calling Sorin a legend for doing so. I repeat what you said because I think EarthSouthside is doing exactly that -- not disputing the first comment, but just agreeing that Sorin is a legend and appreciating his skill
Lol yeah I suppose owning 3 repair shops 20yrs experience i wasted that $ 6000 dollars per bga rework station ? No they paid for themselves over and over, Sorin just doesn't have experience in bga to use one.

Love this guy. Love his teachings.
I watched this, got amused and reflowed RAM BGA chips on two Raspberry Pi 4 that I failed to fix earlier 🎉 Thanks a lot, all of it really works - no need to be afraid of pushing BGA chips down a little, now I know 🙌🏻. Best regards from Kyiv, Ukraine 🇺🇦
Thank you Soring for these courses, these worth gold.
This hero wears no cape !
About 2 years ago, I replaced all the ram chips in a Dell notebook without reballing and it still continues to work fine. And then I have other chips the same way you do, without any problems. Why make it difficult when easy goes too 😉😁
Soldering skill is something so overlooked. My father taught me building a home computer in the 90's, and I've been able to keep my kids laptops running and up to date for years.
I doubt you were soldering BGA chips back then; most likely, they were DIP chips that even a child could solder.
I soldered a USB 3.0 controller once in the same way. The chip I bought came with the soldering balls but I had difficulty soldering it right, I think I made bridges. But after ironing the chip solder balls and the solder on the board, and after using the hot air and a little bit of pressure with the twesears at the end it worked fine. Thanks for the video and the tips Sorin.
you are sharing secrets of this job[things we are doing every day]and i can say thank you for not repairing other kind of job than laptop repair😇😇😇
we learn this on a hard way years of hard work and no one to tell us......
Yes, the EUPHEMISM is no one shares this! Those who knows it, keep it as CLASSIFIED information!😳
How I did this in the past, I used solder iron to mix the balls with leaded solder on chip and on the PCB. This decreases the heating time of the chip and reduces the risk of baking it. Also I tried to leave the balls larger like you did it first time because if the chip is too close to the board you can get cracked joints or broken pads because of cold-heat cycles.
To be sure you will have a lasting repair leave a little space between chip and PCB and always use leaded solder, it's much more flexible
@@Sergiu_K What kind of leaded solder are you using, please? I am always looking for the perfect one.
@lela8714 perfect solder is kester solder or mechanic the one sorin uses.abut i prefer kester
@@lela8714 Not sure what is the perfect solder, I am using Brofil 60 type 2.1 Sn60Pb40 0.5mm for small stuff or 1-1.5mm for larger stuff. The thicker ones have more flux inside. The point is to have Pb content, the rest is based on experience using it. And remember: rosin is your friend
@@MeloSaric expensive stuff, $30-40 more than the regular brands for a small spool. im suspecting $25-30 of that went on the fancy packaging 🥴
@luminousfractal420 What fancy packaging kester solder arrives in little cardboard box. It went to quality and thin wire you know how thin is kester solder like very thin thin wire get lucky try to find that in china. You know that the tinner the wire faster you will solder. And it will make you solder joint like mirrors. Here are some properties of kester solder.
Industry standard for decades
Excellent solderability to a wide variety of metallizations
High activity rison core formulation
Leaves bright/shiny solder joints after reflow
Standard Core 66 (3.3% flux)
Dont be stupid if you don't have money or you're cheap to buy quality stuff dont spread misinformation.Dont assume give me facts. You think people like Sorin and Luis Rossman are ignorant and they are buying these types of solder for nothing. You will not get similar results with that cheap shit.
Sorin.. thank you all the time.. this work is just fun for you... You make this work simple for we upcoming technician
I love how genuine you are Sorin 👍. So much bs on RUclips but listening to you has restored my faith in humanity. So grateful for your channel ❤.
I believe the best fix is the simple fix. I have tried to reball a chip before and it was near impossible without a scope. The only reason I did it that way was because lots of people just say you must use 0.4mm balls and a stencil. Listening to you explain it just confirmed what I was thinking in my head at the time. The pad will only hold so much solder if it's from my soldering iron or fresh balls it won't make any difference.
Thanks again for your videos I loved this one please continue 👍.
Omg I didn't know this, thanks alot sorin, I used to reball and do all sorts of crazy stuff, I didn't know I could just push back down, I always thought I would get a short
I’ve always done it this way thinking I was cutting corners because I didn’t want to pay for a reball setup. Ha, nice one Sorin.
You are the master of soldering. Thank you
I agree on small BGA like in the video that works. No reball is required. Very practical. But go bigger, like PCH or CPU/GPU and you need reballing. In addition the original solder balls are mostly lead free and susceptible to cracking.
Yes, the PSA is at 18:10. The bigger the chip, the harder this gets.
I agree. The 2nd method is my favorite; literally you have 1/2 ball on the chip + 1/2 ball on the landing. Melt them together with flux and whalla.
One thing I have wondered, though, is the connection. Most will not care because if it works, it works. However, I am a quality-oriented person. Properly soldering means using the solder not as the connection, but rather the material that holds a good "mechanical connection" in place. I sometimes wonder if the terminals are floating with the solder between them making the connection ... and is this type of connection less-effective due to solder not conducting at the same speed/quality that a true mechanical connection would.
If you know and feel like commenting. Thx.
Great courses. Thanks a lot for sharing with us.
Thank you, you make everything easy.
One of my favourite videos you've ever done. I can't wait to practise this on an old motherboard tomorrow morning :)
I got a load of knackered boards with various smd chips on and just practiced taking comonents off and on, and of diffent sizes, also while learning managed to get alot of components to reuse, saving a lot of money.
How many chips did you see me rebaling ?
👇
Don't worry @northwestrepair, one day you will get better :)))))))))))))))))))))
like we say in the Portuguese Marines, we no better or worse we are different. Great Sorin
.Thanks, just what I needed. Thought I was making a mistake pushing down on bga chips.
I love you from Nigeria... Anytime I come across your videos I always like it
Master of soldering ❤. The best chanel thet ever exists. Thanks Sorin
Awesome video Sorin as always, thank you for showing us an alternative method.
Paul, USA!!!
Sorin you should make a shirt "We have picture- and have a picture of you smiling" I would buy it 100% 😋
I was always told the solder balls create a slight gap between the chip and the board, which aids in heat dissipation during the chip's operation. Directly soldering without spacing can lead to heat buildup and reduced chip lifespan.
No. Air does not conduct heat very well. The longer the solder, the less heat transferred to the motherboard. The motherboard helps spread the heat out. Now if the motherboard was hotter than the chip, and there was a fan blowing across and under the chip, then that would be true.
Sorin what heatgun do you use? Amazing content as always, you are better than northridge fix.
I have watched so many repair videos but haven't seen anything like this. I mean BGA soldering..😊😊😊😊
You are perfect solder desolder
That no lead stuff anneals after time and cracks, flux and reflow usually works fine except when the pads lift... and knowing that only comes from experience...
And Sorin is a master of "if it ain't broke don't fix"...
Thanks for easy pizza
This is a must have to see video !!! Big Thank You for sharing Knowledge !!!
Fascinating video. Thank you Sorin 👍
I really like this course, thanks Sorin🙏🏻
Thanks Soring for the course, that was very informative...
I love my old teacher ❤
Great as always! Sorin, master of soldering.
Thank you for this course
At times Sorin's videos are the real life version of those iffy looking electronics repairs in Star Wars!
Very good thanks for the no re ball Good video .
Sorin the master of soldering. ☺
Thank you Mr Sorin
Good to see other ways of doing.Great video.
Great lesson! Thanks Sorin.
Excellent as always 👍🏻 I love pragmatic solutions
i'm waiting for upcoming course . keep it up sorin
Thank you Sorin ❤
Excellent. Thank you!
Perfect! Another great lesson
Another master class!
Steadiest hands on the Internet, Great craftsmanship!
Good job mate 👏
What can I say besides it makes perfect sense its simple it needs to be soldered so solder it
@Electronics Repair School Sorin, what flux did you use?
Iam very glad to watch your channal // its very usful. thanks
morning sorin I have watched you reballing a VGA before. But all is Good 👍
YES! Been doing this for years.... Just wasn't gonna share me secret because the strident "know it alls" go beserk and just didn't want to deal with it. They won't argue with Sorin, as he always does dodgy repairs.... ;)
So you are saying I didn't need to order these 415 reball plates? I also don't need these ten jars of 250k solder balls of different sizes? OOOOOF! I should have seen this first. lol Got them if I need them I guess. Great video Sorin.
Hi Sorin. great stuff. What if we have bridge under the chip? does it cause the chip burned when get voltage? And can you do one more BGA soldering for chipset/cpu ?
Hi Sorin thanks for this. What is the flux your using for this texhnique. Do you think the liquid rosin on your shop would be acceptable? Thanks!
Stating the airflow too could be useful.
Nice video Sorin.😊 One quick question. Can shorted screen kill motherboard and CPU.?
I love this guy
This is a very small square chip. The reason why you should reball chips is the curvature of the pcb and the chip. They are not ideal line , the are both more or less curved. The bigger the chip the bigger the space between the pcb and the chip. You need solder balls to take that space. They also give some protection when pcb bends. But the reason why your repairs work is that all products are after warranty / end of life and noone cares if they work 1y or 5y more.
90% of repairs will be like this one. Of course it would be hard if not impossible with larger chips but that's not something you'd do in the day to day repair business.
helpfull and loved it
NIce , Just Nice Sorin .. The Best
Master sorin every laptop is an easy pizza
This might be a dumb question, but could you do this for a laptop CPU? I know they have more pins, but could you do it with this method?
Hello Sorin, thank you very much for the video, very good content. A question about USB testers, I have Fnirsi FNB58 connected to my laboratory source, the tester turns on but I can't get the USB-C output to power the laptop to negotiate any voltage with it. If I put the USB tester through the laptop's original power supply, it does. Any ideas? Thank you
Even though the laptop is usb-C it can have proprietary power management like my asus zenbook. PD isn’t always used by manufactures.
Damn crazy but thanks sorin give me more knowledge 🥰👍
Will not work when raballing CPU or GPU. Smaller chips why not, I was swapping them without new solder balls, but with various success rate. Then you are wandering if the chip is faulty or you didn't do your soldering job property. Also some IC are more fragile then others. Just an opinion, interesting point of view Sorin.
Thanks to you are the BEST 🎉🎉🎉🎉
one off the beast video 🥰
So now we are finnaly ready to reball the cpus and gpus ofcourse only with proper calibrated wires. Do not overcomplicate things by using expensive hot air machines, preheaters, stencils etc
Ha ha NF few days ago did one when he showed reballing and EC chip using stencils and so on meticulously. Another method here but I sense there is a bit of competition between you too in a subtle way. May be rivalry 😊. Soap opera 😂
No, no competition with anyone, this video has been recorded 3 weeks ago
@@electronicsrepairschool Thank you for your reply. My apologies, I commented in the spirit of entertainment, fun and a bit of spice for joyful comments . Perhaps I should remove this comment?
Closer to motherboard beter cooling 😀
What's the mini cooling fan brand & model plz ?
So even larger chips like PS3 GPUs responsible for yellow light of death, this can work?
I'd give this a try on the small chips but too many things to go wrong on a large BGA like CPU/GPU core.
Yes, not on phone chips too!
So its the same for ram and vram chips? No stensel needed?
Thank you boss
I always called the EC chip Super IO (or SIO). Is that wrong?
you are the best
i love you man
What about bga chips where solder balls can be trapped under the chip?
Hey sorin have you tried this with a cpu + pch combo?
Huh. 🤔. Well you cant argue a master.
This is a good video but what if it’s a New Chip
Hmm, what about new phone circuit boards? which are 2 to 3 inches in size 😅
yeah probably if you are doing a iphone cpu you need to reball since too many balls but the space in between so close to each other
Dziekuje za wiedze!!!
Great Video !!!
I can't understand how you're desoldering a bga chip in 20 seconds with no flux and no pre-heating. Sometimes it takes me more to take out a freaking capacitor. What's the trick?
Could be quality of the rework station. Or air and heat difference
@@charanebot6423 My hot air station is not a fancy one, but I checked and the temperatures are as expected. Seriously, when I see YT videos of people desoldering stuff I always feel like they're speeding up the footage.
@@IlBiggo OK. I get your point. Sorin has showed in his one of his previous videos how he uses max temp and max air to remove it.
And I've seen Louis Rossman suggest similar in one of his old videos too.
Youry the best
i have an oscal charging board it's like 4cm by 4cm the usb c connector some of its pins are broken and the pads on the board are missing too which temperature i should use when using heat air station and when trying to fix some missing pad traces on usb type c connector , which temperature i should use when using soldering iron ? the board name is "T30-A8-type-C"
also when you used the soldering iron on that BGA chip to clean the solder , which temperature did you use ?
@marwanFX483 if I'm not mistaken it was 400 degrees
@@Denise_in_progress that the temperature of the hot air station not the soldering iron
Thankssss
Sorin is doggy to perfection 😂
Doesn't work on all chips, like for example GDDR5 memory chips, but when it does, why not.
Has anyone used solder paste to reball? like directly on the chip, no stencil?
