    I just use the potatoes I've brought from the supermarket.
    I'm in the UK.
    The ones that have sprouted, those are the ones I've planted and I've always had lovely harvests, grown in buckets too.

      I've got some chitting in window sill now. They are Maris piper and just whatever Tesco general purpose potatoes are. If I plant them now will they be 'earlies' and ready in summer or do I need special varieties to plant at this time? Guess I'm asking are earlies simply when you plant them or specific potato varieties. Thanks

    • @donnab79
      @donnab79 Год назад +1

      Maris piper and the general White or Red potatoes that we get over here in the supermarkets are a main crop.
      All to do with the size of the potatoes. Main crop being a larger sized potato.
      Baby, salad, new potatoes would be classified as the 1st and 2nd earlies because there's naturally smaller.
      But go ahead and get planting and I believe you'll have some good sized Maris Piper potatoes during the summer.
      You can also harvest them alittle early if you wanted to aswell but they would just be alittle smaller but perfectly fine to eat.

    Thanks for the info! I bought a bag of organic gold potatoes from my local grocery store a week or two ago. Today I sat down to wrap them up to prep them for sprouting. 1/3 to 1/2 were already sprouting. I had set the bag in my office near my aquarium & plant lights so they are the good sprouts. :) They are all wrapped up as you demonstrated and are under the lights to finish sprouting out.

      If you want them to last long, store them in a cool dark place. But that's not the way to sprout them. If potatoes sprout in dark, they are too spindly, and that's not good.

    No wonder I always have sprouts potatoes! 😂 I always keep the onions and potatoes in the same spot .
    To tell you the truth, I use to invest in seed potatoes from my feed store's but I always had very poor results. One the reason they sell it right at growing season and not enough time to sprouted at home . I learn my lesson and I get my seed potatoes at regular store's even if they say they're 💯 organic!? I don't believe it . I have been successful just growing any potatoes 🥔

    Never heard about putting an onion with them. Interesting. Also, all the years I've planted potatoes i would always cut them into pieces with 2 to 3 sprouts on each piece and ant them right away. Never once had an issue, every potato would sprout. This past year i decided to try with 8 of my potatoes to let them scab over. Of those 8 only 1 grew. The 8 i didnt let scap over all grew. I dont know what the issue was, but for me it seems what i have been doing works.

    Here is a fun fact while it is helpful to have onions next to it for faster sprouting it is also good to have onions near them because rats do not like the smell of onions. Garlic is also a rat repellant so might wanna add one of those in because of the strong smell but as they age the rats will get used to the smell so keep em fresh

    Whats wrong with the long tits? I have never sprouted potatoes on purpose but when they sprout, because they usually do, I plant them. It might help create some sense of urgency about the thing if I had a reason not to procrastinate about it. I plant a lot of produce from the store like onions bottoms, carrot tops , celery, pineapple tops, and more just to see what will grow. Notably, the two different high dollar organic chia seeds were dead but the cheap ones sprouted great. I suspect organic veggies might be sprayed with sprout inhibitors to extend shelf life as likely as any other. i heard a chicken farmer say regarding eating roosters "meat is meat". Honestly, I was unsure about whether or not roosters were good to eat and it might not be that profound but I kind of feel the same way about the whatever that grows from the scraps because if I knew they were GMO they'd never have made in the house so worts case, they momma had some poisons on them and petro fertilizer.
