  • A Marine combat pilot, a mechanical engineer, and a first-time space flyer - just some of the ways to describe Nicole Mann, commander of NASA’s next SpaceX Crew Dragon mission to the International Space Station. Hear her describe her California childhood, her path from Naval Academy to pilot to astronaut, and how she expects this mission to contribute to the evolution of human possibilities.

    Col. Mann,
Thank you for what you said, and doing what you do for the reasons you do them. It can be easy to lose hope in a world with so many fractious divisions, where borders and dollars seem to motivate people more than our common existence and shared future as well as that of generations to come. Your words and frank message of hope remind me of why I wanted to do what you do when I was younger and why I still love space and science. It inspires me to look to the sky not just literally, but in also in my literal goals. I doubt I'll ever fly as high as you will, or as far and that's just fine: as long as I can take part, it's important even staying on the ground.
You also reminded me of how important it is to be able to build; and to be brave enough to know I can actually be an engineer (though Embedded Systems) too. I've been facing some choices in what to do next, that settled it for me. It might not matter to a lot of people who see this, but knowing someone who looks like me can excel as an engineer, as a pilot, as an astronaut, live a life, and say these things makes me feel what I rationally know to be true. Thank you for representing in all the ways you do, not the least of which is as a Native woman going to the moon (I know, not yet)! I really hope that in eight years I can be doing something as awesome for space and the world as you're doing now.
I'm going to remember what you said every time I'm thinking 'why is math so hard?' and spinning my wheels on programming; math is what gets us to the literal stars, math is as much a tool for building as a TIG welder (though that's tricky stuff IMO), and it's really worth it. When the numbers on the page get overwhelming, I can always just look up and remind myself of where it all goes; not just for me, but for all of us. Humanity and every other being on this planet is in it together, it's our responsibility to keep on keeping on. Going higher and further doesn't have to pull people apart, nor should it. So again, thank you!

Congratulations! I'm glad you dreams came true. With all of your experience, you will make an excellent commander for the mission. I'm sure there are a lot of young girls in the world right now who see you as their heroine and who are inspired by your journey. You can now also go by the title Dragon Commander 🐉which is pretty cool.

So I was going through some of my grandfathers old stuff from the 70s and I found something really weird. Some papers about Apollo 19 and notes about a potential Apollo 20 to investigate the location of missing crew members.🤔 I’m confused because I thought 18,19 and 20 was canceled but I know for a fact all of this stuff is legit. His last note says. “ I don’t trust these Russian bastards.” 😂
