    Nice video, I'd just like to point out that Halo novels explains that all plasma projectiles are surrounded by a magnetic field that guides them to their target. The small arms in the covenant will most certainly have that feature in them.

    If you can make the magnetic field in a plasma bolt stay active while it is flying thru the air (kind of like the sun) you wont need a ballistic outer shell.

      A Fermian Condensate is literally photons stacked on top of one another. So far we've only been able to arrange a very small number....a few tens of photons. But maybe one day, more.

    • @brandonmiller9155
      @brandonmiller9155 5 лет назад +1

      In the case of hard light, it’d be impossible to dodge as it would move at the speed of light, however.. I’m not sure what type of damage it would do. If the photon stacks are dense enough perhaps it could super heat the area it hits immediately, vaporizing it on contact, but as light acts in a strange way I feel as though things like vantablack and other light capturing substances would be sufficient shields to stop the hard light projectiles.

    • @1rotzy
      @1rotzy 4 года назад

      @@brandonmiller9155 I can only guess on what the damage of a hardlight round could do, but if a round was fired at an object the outer shell would most likely break. This would release the hundreds, thousands, or, if a bigger weapon, millions of photons all at once.
      In lower settings, the only thing that would happen would be a bad sunburn. At higher settings in atmosphere, the sudden release would send the photons into the area around the impact. The light, and more importantly heat, would turn the air around the impact into fire, creating a miniature explosion.
      In space, projectiles, in my head, would be less effective than in an atmosphere. So instead I could see hardlight being used as a beam weapon. Concentrated on a target it would be similar to a blowtorch, or a plasma cutter.
      No real science to this, just a nerd who thinks about this stuff to much.

    actually saying that such a weapon could not be real is neither true or wrong... infact we don´t really know the technology behind the covenant weapons out of the game even the lore says it´s unknown how they exactly work, there are just tiny bits "known" about these weapons, for example that the "low density weapons" as you mentioned form some kind of controllable and formed magnetic field around the plasma projectile to hold it together in mid air (of course it is just fantasy and if that weapon, even when properly explained how it works ingame could work or not is nothing we can tell yet... technology hasn´t advanced far enough to understand anything that far just like the hyperspace-drive from the games, that the UNSC use)

    • @onyx3933

      To understand Covenant weaponry you just need to know Forerunner weaponry, the Covenant revers-engineered all their tech from the Forerunners, their false idols.

      I know, Forerunners used Hardlight, but the Covenant use Plasma?
      It's possible Plasma makes Hardlight do more damaging effects, but that the Covenant could only use the Plasma, not the Hardlight, so the covenant weaponry is born, though few of their weapons fire actual solid projectiles they like other weapons burn skin and can cause death if shot and used correctly.

    According to the books and lore all plasma based weaponry use a magnetic cone/shield to punch through atmosphere and guide the shots. This is why plasma pistol overcharge shots track targets. Also the superheated gelatinous form of plasma allowed it to splatter over large surfaces and melt through most armor like a hot knife through butter. Cortana was able to reconfigure the weapons system on a covenant destroyer that instead of firing the plasma in a blob using magnetics to control it, she focused the magnetic arch controls into a direct beam increasing yield and firepower. This however overheated the plasma casting systems and melted them down.

    A couple friends and myself were delving into the science behind Covenant weaponry, and it's amazing how on par we all were with this stuff you were explaining. I'm a Chemistry major and am currently in Physics II, and I'm a huge enthusiast of contextualizing the real science behind science fiction (especially Halo). One thing we were trying to figure out that stumped me, however, is the effective range of Plasma Rifles in exoatmospheric conditions a opposed to conventional in-atmosphere engagements. My friend argues that the sheer temperatures of space could potentially render Plasma Rifles functionally useless, since the heated plasma would be cooled before actually hitting their target (he used the Ranger Elites on Cairo Station as an example). I on the other hand, feel like the range of the Plasma Rifle isn't that effective any way, and the time it would take to cool the bolts down significantly would be negligible.
    At the end of the day, I tried to do some math to figure it out myself; however, Bungie and 343i seem to have made it a point to keep people from know just how the Plasma Rifle works. I'd need to know the substance Plasma Rifles use as projectiles, and the mass of the bolts that are fired from it in order properly calculate the loss of heat over time. So, I'm wondering what your input is on the subject.
    Sorry for the massive rant, haha. Science get me excited. XD

    Then again, to be completely fair, the Covenant and all their technology is reverse-engineered from Forerunner tech, meaning that the Forerunners may have mastered the use of plasma weaponry, though most weapons focus on solid beams of hardlight.
    I'll also note that no one really knows what kind of projectile the carbine fires, though likely radioactive, as well as being partially solid.
    Because it seems to disperse across targets or just make small green blobs near where the shot hit.

      +Kerman Guy Yes it would, and in adition to the video, he forgot to mention that the Halo books explain why the Plasma weapons work in-atmosphere just as well - the plasma is surrounded in a magnetic field which keeps it compressed and hot and delivers it to its target with some mild tracking/heat seeking capabilities (as seen in Halo Reach with the Plasma Repeater if you were an Elite.)
      This also explains why the plasma guns have much slower projectiles than the bullets - it has to guide the projectiles by manipulating magnetic fields so it can never be as fast as a bullet can!

    • @onyx3933
      @onyx3933 9 лет назад

      The gauss cannon utilises a form of kinetic energy by just firing a metal rod through cambers until it fires, it is NOT plasma, the rail gun and gauss cannon are smaller versions of a standard MAC cannon.

    • @balltoball1
      @balltoball1 9 лет назад

      +And The Atom Smashes I think you missed umo's point, instead of firing a metal slug, why not fire a sealed slug with a chamber filled with say, argon. when fired the gas inside would quickly become plasma while the slug heats past the vaporization point of air. and on impact the slugs deformation would allow the plasma to escape, burning everything near the impact. actually, i hope the NSA agent reading this forwards this to the RnD side of the us military, their rail guns would be SOOOOOO much more deadly

    • @onyx3933
      @onyx3933 9 лет назад

      Ah, didn't know that.
      I've yet to understand plasma fully but I realise its potential to be a useful weapon combined with the kinetic energy of the metal slug with the velocity suddenly decreasing makes for a large explosion.
      Sudden decreases in speed such as when something like a mug falls with cause the impact of that to spread through the mug, and tear it apart.
      You likely knew that but I'm summing up that, if they were real, they'd be the most powerful weapon to not include directly using a chemical or nuclear device.

    Plasma spheroids won't be made properly in this manner. The entire idea of plasma requires a containing structure, and EM fields wouldn't likely be doable in any manner to contain the plasma from within itself. Secondly, plasma, if it's to have any superheating effect on objects it strikes, would have to be super hot. Gasses we know of wouldn't be hot enough when they reach ionizing temperatures, even if we COULD get containment to happen in a free-moving spheroid or toroidal form. We can't use Deuterium, since that'd be literally a small thermonuclear explosion, irradiating everything around it and likely killing the shooter from xray bombardment. Nope. We'd have to instead figure out how to make ball lightning from some sort of base object. Some chinese physicists hypothesized on this: www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-4750304/Ball-lightning-finally-explained-scientists.html

    Plasma rifles and pistols encase the super heated plasma in a magnetic field so it travels faster wen leaving the weapon and doesn't break apart, the magnetic field collapses wen it hits the target allowing the plasma to cover the target, plus it draws nutral gas in from the air and blows small amounts of it through the arc pulse at the front of the weapon witch super heats it instantly generating plasma bolts 😒😒

    One thing that I found fascinating in Halo, by the events in Halo: CE humans had been at war with the Covenant long enough that the alien weapons could have been captured, reverse engineered, and adapted for human use. Yet the humans are still using projectile weapons that would be familiar to warriors as far back as the 1500's They aren't even much more advanced that weapons developed in the late 20th century.
    This would seem to be because the Covenant weapons are less advanced than human weapons. In fact you might even say that the Covenant are adapting human weapons for Covenant use.

      Eric Taylor They attempt to reverse-engineer them, but the UNSC doesn't understand how they work, even the Covenant don't. The Covenant inherited a race of biomechanical engineers called the Huragok from the Forerunners, who build and maintain all their technology. Thus, the Covenant don't need to know how their technology works, and are useless for interogation. The Huragok are occasionally captured, but they were kept so far away from frontline operations that they weren't even identified until late in the war, just before Reach fell. After capturing some, Human technology underwent a meteoric rate of advancement where they began integrating Covenant and Forerunner tech into experimental systems and managed to commit this research to building the Infinity around the time of The First Battle of Earth.
      Sadly it was too late to change and retrain frontline troops, and they didn't have the capacity to manufacture these things en masse. Liken them to the experimental jets and stealth bombers the Nazis were developed in late-WWII. They could've turned the war around if they were deployed earlier, but sadly they weren't developed and put to mass production in time to matter.
      Post Halo 3, the UNSC appears to stick with projectile weapons out of habit, though we haven't seen much so it's possible Guardians will introduce human Directed Energy Weapons.

      +SpacePak by Mike Ridolfi Okay buddy im back and i have to correct you on one thing, Covenant plasma tech use magnetic fields to contain the plasma so it can reach its intended target. They use this on their ships as well as their hand held weapons. That is all thanks.

    343 nerfed the Plasma Pistol in my opinion (in terms of speed, at least).

    I'm sorry, I just can't take this channel seriously at this point. In the last video I watched, you said the word "anyways" the correct word would be "anyway." In this video you said "nuculus" when it is pronounced "nucleus." Things like these are some of my biggest pet peeves and I would expect that a channel discussing how science from video games may or may not work in real life would know how to pronounce nucleus.

      Alex Gluch You don't have to "like" or "dislike" a video. You can choose to not vote at all. However I can see your point, not wanting to be the 118th person to like it, thus fucking up the 117 reference.
      Maybe the real reason Apollo 18 was canceled (and no other manned mission to the moon has been attempted) After what happened to Apollo 13 no one wanted to be the 13th person to walk on the moon. Though considering that the crew of Apollo 13 survived I'm not sure we can really say they were unlucky.

      +Chan Nguyen Give me 3 good reasons why this is copying Game Theorists and in what ways this video is of lesser quality.

      +Chan Nguyen So what you're saying is any science channel or channel that does informational videos on any media on the credibility of the media is a direct rip off from the Game Theorists? That's like saying any game that has characters that even remotely look like Elites is a direct rip off from the Halo character design.
      This guy's channel is cool, don't ruin it.
