@@asdwaetd gotta spend money to make money. Not sure how you start up a manufacturer, perform research and development, hire people, build production lines, etc without spending more than you take in in revenues initially... You literally start with no revenue stream and massive investment costs before you can even roll one sellable unit out of the building.

Being an engineer I haven't seen such a beautiful explanation of some basic physics concepts which are unfortunately often misinterpreted by a lot of engineers in industries. Such an amazing teacher Peter could be. For now you being a CEO, I'm glad I work under your leadership!
Having a real engineer who is also a "car guy" is priceless.

@@grantguy8933 Rawlinson has brought the right people together and is doing the right thing by prioritizing quality over production volume. Lucid's sales this year and even next matter very little. Establishing a reputation for quality and superior driver experience is the goal. Once the factory is complete and operational, we will be able to judge the results. Tesla has never sold more than 30k Model S in a year. People like SUVs and Lucid's rolls out in '24.
And you both can sell shares to late fools !

I am not an engineer but I think Peter's presentation of Lucia's battery storage technology is not only impressive but amazing. It's indeed a revolutionary technology especially for the EV market.
Scary part is now it's up to the bean counters... Can they financially stay alive long enough to make a profit. No doubt they have a great product.

I very much appreciate the high production value of this video. The 'off-the-cuff' presentation from Mr. Rawlinson was fantastic. Heavy scripting or too much marketing would have ruined it. Great video, definitely keep making more content like this!

No, "we" don't "have a real contender to Tesla".
We have another company with an engineer in charge, with certain innovation in design, with useful long term experience, and with potential to do well.
We have a contender to companies building about 40,000 units in 2024/24..... That'll be Porsche, Mercedes.
If Lucid took half that number from Tesla even next year, it would only be 1% (Or less) of their total production.
Tesla will be out of sight for some time.
BYD is 2nd place to tesla and nobody is close in scale.
Copies the Tesla module. Is a real contender. (Minus the bottom cooling. Probably was a better decision).

Tesla is light years ahead of other EV manufacturers. Now everyone wants to capitalize on what Tesla has achieved and done.

Electrical issue:
18650 and 21700 share a like architecture in thermally and electrically. Both has a welded tab at the anode-tab junction and not the tab-case junction which opens up a fire hazard issue, should tab-case junction are bumped open circuited by extreme inertial shock, subsequently the release of an internal spark next to heated chemicals. The Panasonic solution? apply a preload on the tap-case junction by an elastomer, it helps passing preload stress from - anode-elastomer-tab-casing.
On the other hand 46800 has replaced 1) welded tab and 2) preloaded elastomer by 3) annealed copper flaps and 4) preloaded bristle contacts. Pay attention to the flaps. The annealed anode flaps cannot hold its initial shape and will be deformed under constant inertial shocks, shocks coupled via the bristle contacts, one by one disconnected from the adjacent contact until the last contact left. The next inertial shock will finally bump the cell open circuited, to induce a spark next to heated chemicals.
Thermal issue:
18650 and 21700 cells had to dissipate heat laterally because cylinder wall has a lower thermal resistance compare to cylinder base. Yet Lucid chose to pass heat through cylinder base. Lucid chose out of a common misunderstanding share by Tesla.
Misunderstanding?
True:
(A) The thermal resistance in axial direction through metal is less than in an radial direction through laminations chemicals and insulation.
False:
(B) it is wise to chose cylinder base to pass heat in/out of the cell.
Why false?
(C) There is a air gap in between (anode roll) and (cylinder base). This gap is practically a thermal insulator. That affect Lucid’s pack architecture.
(D) the air gap is bridged by a wafer of bristle contacts for 46800 cells, as stated in (C) above, annealed flaps and open circuit issues. Granted open circuit is non issue but the bristle contact is as good as air gap in thermal conduction. Can lead to overheated chemical and possible fire and explosion.
Remedy for 46800 tab less architecture?
Employ induction heated soldering to bridge the anode-case junction. Result : open circuit proof with excellent heat transfer axially.
Remedy for 18650 and 22700?
Slightly extend anode copper beyond the insulation, employ induction heated soldering to bridge the anode-case junction. Result : open circuit proof with excellent heat transfer, actually.

All over car have 400V batterie, because it's a classic electrical motor voltage. From 400V to 900V, it's like going from 110VAC to 220VAC (around 1946 in France)
What next ? 900VAC multi phase motor ?

@@benoitavril4806 Agreed. I did learn some cool Lucid specific tech towards the end (how they step up the voltage in their cell modules and the plastic injection molding for the structural battery pack that also allows for end cooling and cell bondage).
At some point the folks at Munro would have torn this apart, so why not do it yourself and share the knowledge firsthand :)

@@rogerstarkey5390 That is a good channel for future promising battery technologies for sure. Problem is not all the promisong battery tech has panned out yet. Still waiting on solid state lithium ion batteries and cheap perovskite solar cells.

Believe it or not, the QUANTITY of so called little batteries is why I will not buy an electric car. All it takes is for one little battery to malfunction for problems to start happening ranging from loss of performance at a minimum to thermal runaway worse case. If you do buy an EV with Li batteries, please please please install some form of an alarm. Do not believe the hype.
@@danwagner4760 isn’t that the equivalent of having corrosion in your fuel from either your fuel tank or your fuel pump? Your engine’s gonna be destroyed if you have those contaminated in your fuel.
I think we should let these EVs in the market and see if it works or not. This push for EVs is almost like the push of diesels in the early 2000s. Time will ultimately tell whether they are here to replace ICE entirely, or be a companion like diesel nowadays.

Encapsulating, sheer genius. I always loved LUCID motors as an automotive enthusiast but Mr. Rawlinson just increased my respect for engineering a million times. He got me excited about physics even though I hated it in school and me being a pastry Chef. What a presentation. Can’t wait to drive one of these.
I am now saving up to buy a lucid air. I am an engineer and understood the whole conversation. As it was like my high school physics class. But to stand in front of a camera and explain it in better terms in my high school physics teacher, he's sold me

As an Electronics Engineer I appreciated the highlights but in reality I see this as a car truly design with engineering passion for efficiency first. I have a reservation in place but still trying to justify the use case since I am driving less than 6000 miles a year...... I think working for Peter would be a major pleasure.

Wonderful information. Huge information dump. The cooling is a win. The molded modules are genius. The bus system is excellent. But what really blew me away was the drive unit cutaway.
The differential is _Inside_ the rotor! I am speechless. Still trying to work out how many hollow shafts it has. Amazing next-level engineering.

Aaaand I got my Air GT, have put 1,200 miles on it. 800 miles of that on a quick weekend trip at Texas highway speeds. It has exceeded every expectation.

I saw your movie about Lucid air … is great 👍 but for me …even my Tesla X is more comfortable than s class (i got also W222 2019 sclass) maybe in Tesla X is not as quiet as in S class but still seats are for me a lot more comfortable 😎 air suspension is in my opinion 15% better in s class but still i prefer to drive X better than S class. I’ve never driven Lucid but I hope is more comfortable than sclass 😎 greetings from Poland 🙌🏻

From a beginner course of simple energy mathematics to very detailed and informative overview of what is a battery pack and what's inside it, and why they chose the way they do thing at Lucid. I'm sure everyone with responsibility in the Industry has now seen this, but from a regular Joe like me, I'd like to thank Lucid and Mr Rawlinson for making this series. It was very enjoyable!

I would imagine they have a patent on this so they are protected from the competition for a considerable amount of time.
@@gmv0553 yes they do have patent protection for a long tiem now, but we didn't see them revealing it to this extend until now.
What would really be good is open patents to advance the transition(?)

@@rogerstarkey5390 LUCID is open to licensing deals. They did pour tons of time and money into the development of their tech, so I wouldn't expect them to just give all their competitive advantages / patents away without any return.

I just wanted to make a comment saying how impressed I was with Peter doing this video. Having a CEO get in front of a camera to go over technical details of his battery pack is just something you don’t see. Respect for making this video.
Somebody should tell Warren Redlich to watch this when he is not busy making videos claiming that Lucid is a fraud since he doesn't get the math.
Redlich is too busy screaming hate toward NIO and Battery Swapping. That NIO's swap stations are a game-changer and brilliantly designed and a massive success in China with hundreds of swap stations is considered heresy. By the congregation of the Church of Lord Elon. Because TESLA failed at it they must condemn it as an attack on their lord. Plus the interior of a NIO is German quality in a way a MODEL S PLAID for double the price is not.
