    Casper had all the shots, and he had the ability to hit a fade or a draw equally well. Hogan hated to have to play a right-to-left shot, but of course he could hit whatever the situation called for but Casper seemed to thrive on working the ball around. I stood behind him at Memorial Park in Houston about 1960 and he could drill bullet-like fades off the tee that were low and would roll forever - first guy I ever saw who hit a fade that didn't land softly. He was a tough cookie.

    Notice how back then the cameras either could not or did not follow the ball in flight as they do now. Also notice how wristy the players were with their putting strokes. By the way this was the last time there was an 18 hole playoff in the Masters. The next playoff was in 1979 and it was sudden death, won by Fuzzy Zoeller.

    • @BirdmanDeuce26
      @BirdmanDeuce26 2 года назад

      From what I remember reading, the greens back then weren’t mowed as tightly as they are now, so they rolled slower and there was plenty more grain at play that golfers had to account for. It would make sense that everyone’s putting strokes would be wristy-er as they were effectively making modified chipping strokes

    • @dttruman
      @dttruman 2 года назад

      Technology was on the start of it's way up. The greens back than were no where close to how immaculate they are now

    • @billboys9283

      I noticed the cameras too. Apparently, computers made it easier to follow a ball later on. During this broadcast it seems like the method was to overshoot the ball. I assume that it was easier to track the whole shot by pulling back, if you will.

      The greens back then were MUCH slower. Average greens speeds pre-1990s have been estimated to be around 2. Today, most major championships are rolling 12 or higher (if the weather holds up).

    I don't care what anyone says... the fact that it's called the Masters - and all the caddies were black - is quite telling and deeply disturbing. Given the time period, if you don't think this was racist by design you're an absolute ignoramus. These caddies weren't giving crucial insights to these "masters" like they do today either - they were merely servants, carrying their heavy bags in tow. Disgraceful - and it gives me a new appreciation for Tiger Woods' success and how it must have been a HUGE FKN thorn in the side of the establishment.

      It was pretty much how all of the Jim Crow South was. I'm just old enough to have a single vivid memory of it. Early 60s Dallas. I was a restaurant called The Rib with all black waiters wearing all white, just like Uncle Ben on the rice box (does that still exist). I remember the place because those waiters would bring by carts loaded with mouth-melting BBQ, and you could pick what you wanted. So I remember the food and how those waiters would call me without any irony, "Sir," like I was a man, not a little boy. My parents were from Europe, and not really into American racism, so I had no understanding of black and white. All I knew was there was something really wrong about this grown man being so deferential to me. It's one of my earliest and most vivid memories. So what Im suggesting is that the black caddies and The Masters probably had no conscience racism behind it--it was just the casual, tacit racism that was par for the course in Georgia in the 30s when they started the thing, which--when you think about it--is worse. Racism was completely normal and not even questioned, certainly not considered.
