Indeed and a shaky Pat Summerall doesn’t help either. Tom Weiskopf is rather enjoyable though.
He was fine. His job was to set the scene. To make sure the audience knows the value of the upcoming shot. He did that very well.
I like how the honorary starters used to play the entire first hole.

Many thanks for posting this. As a life long fan of Bernhard Langer (and The Masters), this was a real treat and the first time I've seen the complete final round. I didn't know Strange had shot an opening round 80 - that would have been an amazing and legendary win if he had held on. It's interesting to see that Langer's pre-shot routine is completely identical some 33 years later on the senior tour . . . two slow practice swings, stand behind the ball, address and swing. Nothing has changed.

The last Masters for Frank Glieber as he died from an apparent heart attack on May 1st of that year. One of the great commentators in Masters broadcasts.

Great moment on 18th after finishing. Seve giving words of support. Probably saying he’s got this in the bag. But great camaraderie and sportsmanship
He said “I’m pleased for you. You’ve won it for Europe”.

Ray Floyd looked like he was distracted by the commentators as he tried to play his 3rd shot on 9 which was followed by quite a long silence.
Whenever I see Raymond Floyd I think of Lee Trevino's hilarious story about the first time they met ....

Dude I absolutely love how much the caddies got into it. You dont see it as much in today's games. Yea they get excited but at 12 minutes when Nicklaus made that putt, the dude was jumping up and down with joy

Ptrek i just saw a show when the old days all the players had to use a club caddie. Big deal for them paywise$, and some major excitement, fun betting, and a matter of pride regards who did best
At some point early 80s maybe ? It changed to players could bring their own caddy.
59:27 Rainbow Man very rudely pushed his way in front of the woman in green so he could get a spot on TV and 59:55 did it to the guy in blue...looking directly at the monitor. 1:22:30 he's there leaning on the rope. Interesting to watch how he always finds a way to get on camera.
Weiskopf with another genius call on Curtis Strange's going for it on 13. He made a legendary call on Nicklaus's hole 16 shot at the 86 Masters, as well. Bravo, Tom, and rest in peace.

Just read today where Langer is playing his last Masters this year - so I just had to watch this! He's awesome!

"Curtiss with some new equipment that he says has changed the game around"......ummmmmm.....I'm shooting 85 on Friday and 95 on Saturday, so.....it's not the equipment. .... it's the 6 inches between my ears. 40 years later.
Incredibly fast play from Strange and Floyd from holes 10 holes to 11. Playing approaches at both greens within a few minutes of each other. Very impressive.
If you set the playback speed to 0.25 you can actually see a blur moving from the 11th tee up the 11th fairway. That's Floyd. He wasn't even out of breath during the approach shot.
Strange made a big comback from that opening round.He showed that he had what it takes to win a major.

I know, and he was a great player with great nerves (in his prime).
But this tournament wasn’t the best example of that.
As a PGA Club Professional of 58 years of age this is in my time period of being young. IT'S INCREDIBLE how slow those greens are compared to today's standards and how short the holes are. Number 7 was 360 to 400 yards now it's 440 - 450 yards.
When you have clubs like dinner plates, something has to change......Imagine today's youngsters trying to hit the clubs we had to use.....Fresh air swings all round!!!

Sad this was one of Frank Gliebers last events for CBS sports before his heart attack that sadly took his life
The first time I taped a Masters and I must have watched it 50 times. Been a long time though. For two and a half rounds, Curtis Strange was the best-ever player at Augusta.
Wish they would have given us one Travelers commercial for kicks and grins.
Wish i would have been paying attention back then, didnt start watching till few years later, was cool seeing Snead and Sarazen actually playing walking down the fairway after their tee shots
Bernhard was magnificent,Hardin was obnoxious.
Ben Crenshaw was very gracious though, helped keep the peace.

Makes me laugh, how many times did the clearly biased commentators say "Langer / Ballesteros are struggling to make ... ", when faced with a 26 inch putt. How did that work out?
Musberger did have one funny and poingnant moment. While sitting in Butler cabin with Nicklaus, and Weiskopf, he said how if Nicklaus couldn't win, that it was nice to see a German win. As they're all of German descent. Nicklaus, Weiskoph, Musberger, and Langer.
Just rewatching this tournament. I have never seen the pin on 2 on the left on Sunday. Usual Sunday pin Is on the far right.
They didn't show Curtis strange Bogey on 10. Floyd birdie on 10 either.
It's obvious that Nicklaus is somewhat distracted and he's thinking what he could have done differently, and he truly thinks he let this one get away. He'd put it all together, one last time the following year, and Langer would be putting the Green Jacket on Nicklaus, which is still the record for most wins with 6.
Thay had the most ideal conditions to play a final round that was a awesome masters tournament 1985 of course any masters is awesome thanks to the vision of Bobby Jones❤😊

No, that was 1988 when they “cried” about the greens speed. Not 1985.
And as I recall, it was only Fuzzy Zoeller who was critical. Crenshaw, Floyd & others defended the fast greens as Augusta’s only defence.

By the old way of tallying, ergo counting the Amateurs, as well Nicklaus has 20, and Woods has 18..I for one believe that the Amateurs should be counted.
@@seanscott7070 AGREED. But it is too late now. It should have a 3 year PGA tour exemption for the winner. And as much of a cretan that he is, Tiger's run of US Junior Amateur 91, 92, 93 and US Amateur 94, 95, 96 followed by the Masters in 97, is probably the greatest achievement in Golf apart from Jack's 18 Majors. It is certainly better than the 11 in a row from Byron Nelson.
How is winning from 91-97 those amateur titles and masters better than winning 11 in a row on tour by Mr nelson?
@@greatwhiteshark9192 Nelson's victories were in 1945 when the bulk of the players were not on the tour and one of the victories was an 18 hole event.. Each Amateur title is 6 knock out rounds and a 36 hole final.

He was at most sporting events in the 80s (people actually gave him seats so he'd be near the cameras) - that is, until he he went nuts and took someone hostage and basically had a shootout with police. He's now in jail for a pretty long time - his name is Rollen Stewart.
The Masters wouldn't let him wear the rainbow wig.

Ken Venturi actually said that Strange made the right move in going for the green on 13, Weiskopf was the one who felt Strange should have laid up
Obviously Strange made the right decision in going for the green on 15 but he hit a lousy shot

Ever since I saw the Tiger v Strange interview where Strange was awful towards Tiger, I’m always pleased to see it when he losses, especially making a mess on hole13.
@snag66 He may have evolved to be more frustrated towards the media, but back then, he was a very young man, and his poise was as stellar as his game. The older guys had poor manners, and enough peer support to be blatant and crude publicly. They lost out in many ways, but with endorsements and payouts, they've been rewarded for "protecting golf".
At the time, he had won two us opens while tiger nothing, professionally.
Everybody would have been skeptical, to tiger’s cockiness.
That he would have become the goat, was quite unpredictable back then.
Not sure I care about how great Strange was for being in a position to win it after shooting an opening round of 80, who cares, he shot 80, doesn't matter when that number pops up, didn't seem compelling to me...
Langer caught him, put pressure on him and Strange folded, such is life and this is not a disrespectful post on Strange, such is life... tip of the cap to Langer is how I see it....

And, I don’t think Strange was a “folder.” He did win two US Opens, which is a pressure-packed as it gets.
