1:06:55 You kinda got it right. They were touring non-stop for 2 years straight for OK Computer, and they didn't expect it to blow up. Also having fans abandoning concerts mid-way after playing Creep didn't help. They were exhausted, sad, almost splitting up, so Thom (vocals) was on a writers block and decided to go full-on rythmic. After months of experimentation (even randomly assembling some lyrics with papers in a bag) they released this. No singles, barely any marketing. How To Disappear Completely is Thom and the rest of the band releasing all that pain and anxiety they were experiencing tour afyer tour. I really encourage you to look up the history of that track. It's their favourite (at least Thom's). Glad to have you back!
@@okraschoten5360 I seem to remember seeing an interview with Thom Yorke where he talks about the song being pretty morbid and references those lyrics - i could be wrong though
@okraschoten5360 Yeah those AI generated lyrics are horrible. Its sad to me that young people don't get to enjoy an album's packaging, booklets, lyrics, not to mention credits so you can see who plays what or who wrote which songs in some cases.
Amazing intuition, I was that fan who was gutted by this album hoping for "OK Computer" Part 2. I took a 6 year break after hearing it from my 'favorite band' to immerse in the blues, then was recaptured by "In Rainbows" - the Live From the Basement concert - and mind blown, then went back and now of course love Kid A. But this album is often called 'the biggest left turn in rock history' so you were so very very on point with your reaction, and far more open minded to sounds and songs I wasn't able to get until many more listens and several years to come back. It was divisive, but I am happy to say I returned and have remained comfortably happy with everything the band has done. They keep pushing further on the next record, start bringing back the rock vibe on the following, then seem to find maybe their ultimate sound with #7 'In Rainbows.' All of that is my mere opinion, everyone has their own experience. Enjoyed this, thanks, peace/
Speaking as a fan who really got into Radiohead with In Rainbows, I think it's a lot easier to digest the switch up in a short time span. I honestly don't remember if I heard In Rainbows first or not. If I heard their earlier stuff first, I wouldn't have sat with the material for very long and certainly not long enough to have a cemented idea of what the band's sound was.
At 18:55 you're describing a Theremin but in actuality it's an Ondes Martenot. The OM can sound quite similar to a Theremin but has a bit more versatility.
A little extra context for the transition between Motion Picture Soundtrack and Untitled is that the main medium of release in 2000 was CDs, and Untitled was a secret track (not on the track listing), with about 3 minutes of silence preceding it after the end of MPS. So it doesn't lift you out of the slump so quickly.
It devastating exhilaration. It must be heard uninterrupted as a whole but you must be prepared to go there.24 years later, it’s as immediate and clear as Amber. It has been the soundtrack to illness since it’s release and its strangely uplifting. Cathartic; I’m not here , this isn’t happening. iTs OK It was made for themselves, but I heard it for me. I hear phrases like a collage of emotions and it lands true. The rest of the time, I’m laughing till I dance.
i think this is the record where he started writing down lyrics and cutting them up line by line and throwing them up in the air and then reassembling them differently
Radiohead doing "Idioteque" on Saturday Night Live it was the best music could be. A music reviewer gave me the advance promo because her idiot hipster pals @ VICE magazine thought Radiohead were not cool. The week of release I saw PSYCHEDELIC FURS play the first US show in a decade. Irving Plaza played the full album and everyone sang along and danced. The Furs were amazed by the reception of the energized crowd and amazing.
My all time favorite songs ever non specific order : UNISON by Björk , How to disappear completely by Radiohead , In your room by Depeche Mode and Kashmir by Led zeppelin. To me those are masterpieces . I don’t know what you think Lugga ? Do you agree???
@@luggareviews you are missing out … they are both British , Depeche Mode electro /rock / alternative. The kings of that genre . Led Zeppelin the arguably the greatest band of rock and roll ( Pure rock ) If you would like to check those out : In your room , from the album songs of faith and devotion . Kashmir , from the album physical graffiti. I strongly recommend to listen to album / studio versions I can clearly see you would love them . I promise .
Hi again, just wanted to add that Radiohead has often been described as a band that performs jazz compositions on classic rock instruments. By adding a touch of jazz instruments to a track, it adds both complexity and balance. Any thoughts?
who are you
get pinned lol
@@luggareviews omgggg hi comment section!!!!!!
the real question is who am I
Bro heard How to disappear completely and disappeared
Completely.
How to disappear completely is one of my favorite songs of all time

Michael Stipe from REM gave Thom a mantra to read when he was freaking out. Some of it is in the lyrics.
Can't wait for In Rainbows 😭😭🌈
The lyric in Morning Bell "Got the kids in here" is incorrectly annotated - it's actually "Cut the kids in half".
i'm pretty sure those lyrics are AI generated if it's Spotify; sooooo many artists have wrong lyrics in there.

@@albinopidgeon3188 oh i know, i'm agreeing with you, you got the right lyrics. My point was that the lyrics in the video/Spotify are AI generated.

It really is such a beautiful sounding record and you have to listen straight through for it to hit you hard.
Reminds me I need to go back to their discography. So many incredible albums!
welcome back!

I actually loved this time lapse hiatus concept review art movement video ! 😎 willkommen !

the way thom singing and mimicking the orchestra part at the end
I'm not here "AAAHHHH"
feels so painful yet so beautiful.
Welcome back - enjoy it, or run away anytime! 😎
it's totally ok to cry during how to disappear completely. or, you know, lots of other radiohead songs.

Morning Bell is in 5/4 and you are right about the lyrics, is was "Cut the kids in half".
Those lyrics were wrong. I think it's about a divorce.
FINALLYYYYYYYYY
Welcome back!! 🎉
i think this is the record where he started writing down lyrics and cutting them up line by line and throwing them up in the air and then reassembling them differently
On Morning Bell he does sing “Cut the kids in half.” The lyrics on Spotify or whatever you’re reading them from are wrong. The song is about divorce.
Thom is the Pied Piper, apparently
The Kid B bit was funny i have to admit

Yes! Your hiatus of inspiration makes me so happy. Did you post that mix?
No I didn‘t, it‘s just a dumb idea I had while listening to that song lol
You can hear Kraftworks influence all over this record.
I can’t wait for the In Rainbows reaction
"Motion picture soundtrack" is the saddest song of all time. This is basically a suicide note
