I love being a singer in a prog metal band. I get paid the same as everyone else and I get to go backstage and chill half the time. It's like cheating.
I think I would do the same, I used to sing, and during non singing moments, one feels awkward just standing in front of everyone. Some vocalists, use that time to headbang, and or look engaged in the music. But one can only act that way for so long, in prog where there will be 6 minutes of instrumentals mid song.. or you have songs of twenty minutes that are entirely instrumental... better to just dissappear, lmao.

Their latest album featured some cool vocalists! But they also released an instrumental alongside it if that's not your cup of tea. Highly recommend checking it out.

Why mention the surface area as though that's not already implied directly by specifying the shape to be a perfect sphere? I know they arnt prog but this reminds me of when I went to see Dragonforce live back in the Fire and flames days and the singer would just walk off stage for a bit, start talking to the crowd and spraying water all over during the super long solos lol.
haha yes, sometimes it seems like the balance between vocals and other instruments is rather off, but not every prog band is like this. Some of my favorites worth mentioning are Threshold and Vanden Plas
Man this is perfect! I hate when I’m really vibing with a prog song and it takes you to this really great place then gets derailed by all this show offy stuff, Yes and Dream Theater are prime examples. They’re both full of amazing high level musicians who obviously know music theory out the yin/yang, and can construct really unique, beautiful songs but then suddenly in the middle of a song it will sound like (at least to my small brain) they’re playing a completely different song! And these new sections can go on forever...
I would say Dream Theater is much more egregious with this than Yes (though I enjoy both). Yes, at least on those first five alblums, were very good at keeping a song cohesive while taking it to unexpected places. Even if a song took a 180, it felt like it definitely belonged in the broader context, at least to my ears. Only from Tales of Topographic Oceans did the wankiness and meandering start to show itself (only my opinion). Otherwise, if you just don't like any extended passages that deviate from the core structure of the song, I'm sorry to say, but that subversion of expectations is like the main appeal of progressive music
Well to be fair, prog rock, even from the 70's, has been mainly mostly appreciated by musicians. Musicians musicians if you will. Singers in a prog rock bands have always been an afterthought or actually played an instrument anyway, because they knew it to be so. But it DOES depend on what an individual considers to be prog rock I suppose, we all have our own thoughts on this. Take Focus for instance, or Yes or Tangerine Dream, better still more recent Ozric Tentacles, they are not same ilk as today's prog rockers e.g. Dream Theater.
I suppose if you were doing a cover of Take a Pebble by ELP you'd have to wait a full 8-9 minutes between verses. Having said that its probably an all time great song in the progressive rock sphere.
Well, 4/4 is only a sin if there isn’t a triplet, quintuplet, or sextuplet groove. Other rules: 1. leave the key signature ambiguous. Chromatics and tonality changes are required. 2. 8 string guitars. The bass player’s just for show to satisfy elitists. 3. Obligatory sad piano part.
Well, James LaBrie has been putting a lot of stress on his own voice and sounds awful live so it's understandable that the very long instrumental sections are there for him to drink lots of water and go to the bathroom before he has to sing again.
