09:10 In ancient Japan, ritual suicide, also known as seppuku, was an integral part of the samurai way of life. The shame of defeat was something unacceptable for a warrior of this caliber. So he ended his life. The cutting open of the abdominal wall has a symbolic meaning. In the worldview of that time, a person's soul was at home in their abdomen. For this reason, the belly was opened to allow the soul to pass. Such an act requires an incredible amount of courage and discipline, if only because of the unimaginable pain. For this reason, a second person was present. Usually it was someone close to the dying. This second man was given the task of ending the suffering of the first by cutting off his head. In today's time and for people from a different culture this is repulsive and difficult to understand but choosing such a death was just as honorable for the person concerned as for the second person who was chosen.
Great points about the second person. They needed to strike with power, accuracy and without hesitation. Failing in any of these aspects would prolong your suffering. So, being chosen for the task indicated a high degree of trust and respect for the second person.
The person chosen to cut off the head of the person committing seppuku was known as the "kaishaku" and as being chosen kaishaku was a great honour, failing as kaishaku was considered a grave dishonour.
It is a terrible method of death, that has its own tragic beauty. I like how the first instance of seppuku is portrayed with the general slightly hesitating to recover after the first thrust, thus prompting Katsumoto to act. In storytelling, it silently narrates the custom without being cheesy. I never researched the protocols involved, but the second persons role would be to finish the suffering before the one committing suicide could scream, thus preserving honor. It’s one of a myriad of customs throughout humanity that, while terrible, make sense when you see it from the cultural point of view.

This is always going to be an excellent movie and your reaction to it was just as good. Like you pointed out, Magy, it's beautiful to see how Nathan slowly learns their ways, their language, and in turn they open up to him. Getting over the trauma and shame which resulted from the fights against native americans was another satisfying thing to watch, even more so when you see just how much it ended weighing on his mind at the start of the movie. Seeing just how much Katsumoto influenced Nathan and towards the end, the pain in his eyes when he helped Katsumoto get the honorable ending he wished for, that's something that's very hard to forget and iconic lines like "Perfect. They are all perfect" together with "Tell me how he died. - I will tell you how he lived" only serve to make those scenes even more heartbreaking. Thank you for the emotional reaction, it was just perfect, every second of it. You did a great job! ❤
Honestly one of the best war movie ever because it treats more about the mental health of warrior and the way to accept themselves in the world they are building.
Such a great movie! From the cast, to the acting, to the imagery, to the music (Hans Zimmer) and the Japanese countryside. Incredibly well done. One of my favorite movies. And even though The Last Samurai is categorized as Historical Fiction, the character Tom Cruise plays was inspired by the real life Frenchman Jules Brunet, who went to Japan and eventually became a Samurai himself.
This is one of my top 3 movies :) I was lucky enough to spend a month in Japan back in 2007. This is one of the best movies I have ever seen in my life. So many people dismiss this and Dances with Wolves as “White Savior” movies but they’re actually the opposite. They save Nathan by giving him a life of peace, serenity and purpose. He helps by telling them the enemy strategies but that’s about it. Ken Watanabe should’ve gotten an Oscar for this movie, I cry every time I hear him say “They are all perfect”.😭😭 Not to mention Hans Zimmer gives us one of the most beautiful and underrated scores in film history, I listen to the track “A Way Od Life” during meditations. Also the scene in which he ends the duel with Ujio with a draw by completely clearing out his mind is a real life technique. It’s called Mushin or No Mind, the best way to describe it is that it’s exactly like Ultra Instinct from Dragonball Super. I felt it myself when I was training in Kenpo Karate as a teenager, my sensei and his other instructors swore by The Last Samurai and told me to pay attention to that scene specifically. Also Hiroyuki Sanada (who many know as Scorpion from Mortal Kombat 2021) absolutely steals the show as Ujio. Not only is he an amazing actor but he is IN REAL LIFE one of the world’s best and most renowned swordsman. He’s so skilled that stuntmen and coordinators actually go to him for advice sometimes.

that one movie that aged like very fine wine, Tom Cruise best role, the music is everything... you can spend your life looking for the perfect blossom, and it will not be a wasted life
What appears to be the beheading is a ceremony called seppuku or hara-kiri. It was a voluntary suicide by using a dagger to stabbed itself in the right side of the stomach and cut it to the other side and drag it upwards. Then another samurai beheaded to end the torture. In Japanese beliefs of the time, this was an honorable act until the end of World War II.
This is my favorite film, I think. It makes me tear up every time. The poster and the trailer, maybe, make you think about just dumb samurai action and Tom Cruise being awesome as always. But it's much deeper than that. It is about honoring what is true and best, redeeming what is lost, and sacrificing the body and present happiness to save the eternal soul--of the person, the culture and the nation. The music, the acting, the fights and the cinematography all serve those purposes very effectively. It is a profound and beautiful film. Good reaction, ladies!
yes it has many layers to it there are many things to like about it. one small thing i like that is not commented on so much is his vision of the tiger in the beginning and he later sees a white tiger on the lance that nathan is wielding. that there is a destiny. god gave katsumoto a sign.
George Lucas borrowed heavily from the Samurai movies of Akira Kurosawa. Samurai movies are considered "period dramas" or in Japanese 'Jidai (Jedi) Geki'. Some of the scenes in the Last Samurai were shot for shot recreations of scenes from Kurosawa movies.
There's a lot of ideas in this movie that I think are important to think about. Sure, it's a great story about a man finding some peace after suffering for a long time. But the deeper ideas are why it has real emotional depth. We do not need to live like the samurai (and samurai in reality were not a bunch of honorable warriors), but we have lost some of the understanding that made them able to find the kind of peace Algren did. Some of the ideas in bushido, "no mind", "they are all perfect"...these are all things worth thinking about. I know for a fact that "no mind" is a real thing, where you allow your subconscious mind to guide your actions instead of making conscious decisions. In martial arts, it is the only way to fight at your highest level. As for Katsumoto's final words, he isn't referring to just the blossoms he just saw. He is talking about every blossom he ever saw in his life. I hope I can understand that thought someday.
""The perfect blossom is a rare thing. You could spend your life looking for one, and it would not be a wasted life" followed at the end by "they are all perfect" ... is that his understanding that every blossom is what it is supposed to be? He realizes that despite being imperfect, each unique blossom is exactly what it is supposed to be, and is therefore perfect.
yes and also his vision of the white tiger and the tiger on the lance that algren is wielding. if he hadnt seen that he would not have spared his life.
To borrow from Ratatouille, a perfect blossom can come from anywhere. No two people are exactly alike all the time, therefore each person is one of a kind and are meant to have the opportunity in life to be the perfect version of themselves. Since no two people are exactly alike all the time, there is no natural standard of perfection on this mortal coil. We must seek the standard of perfection from the One who made us, and sent His son to teach us His perfection.
The execution scene was well done. The condemned kneels, and often takes their top off partly and wraps the arms of the shirt under their knees so that they fall forward, honorably. Then then pierce their gut to release the soul, and a second person (someone who they respect and respects them) ends the suffering if the kill is not immediate. No suffering, so a close friend is honored to do it. "Bushido, the Soul of Japan" published over a century ago talks of it.
Why do you think "no suffering"? The man who do "seppuku", he have to cut his belly tow or three times before he is killed. Can you get surgery without anesthetization even if it will effective after one or two minutes?
Great react - thank you. This is one of my favorite movies. I love the call to duty and sacrifice. It is also important to remember that the film’s perspective on Samurai is highly romanticized. The Samurai were cruel feudal lords who governed a caste system for a very long time. For a more accurate portrayal read Shogun by James Clavell or catch one of the two miniseries by that name; one older and one pending on Hulu at the time I right this. In the meantime, keep’em coming!!
As i know though my watching movies, there only few movies that evokes the emotions in men and maybe make them tear and cry. this movie definitely one of them, It showed how men hate and respect each other even if they were enemies at first, and the same way how you be enemy and hate the one who is like you from the same nation. i cant write enough about this movies because it will take too long comment.
He's a drunkard and suffers from a condition we only really understand more about now as PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) sometimes referred to in military circles as shell shock

Part 2 would be : All the samurai have died and the hero returns to the widows' village. Then he impregnated the hundreds of widows and his grandchildren attacked Pearl Harbor.
Harakiri is a samurai honor. It has a different meaning than European executions. This act is an act of respect. It was a shame to live in spite of losing.
Magy you should know by now that any movie that has "The Last" anything in the title is going to be sad. In that spirit I would highly recommend The Last of the Mohicans as a movie well worth watching. The cinematography and music alone make it an epic movie
Oh yes it's beautiful where they shot Last of The Mohicans most of that movie is filmed in the Mountains of North Carolina, I live minutes from most of the main scenes of that movie very very beautiful
finally! a reaction that realized the white tiger from katsumotos vision at the beginning! this sets off the whole movie and is the main reason he is taken into custody and not killed! great catch girls!
Other great Samurai movies; Seven Samurai, Throne of Blood, The Hidden Fortress (big influence on Star Wars) Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Kagemusha, Ran, 13 Assassins, Hari Kiri, The Samurai Trilogy, so many. A movie set during the same time period as The Last Samurai, is When The Last Sword Is Drawn.
One of My Absolute Favorites!..Tom Cruise Actually acted well but the Star of the Movie was the Village and Timeplace itself🙏🥹😇🌹🌹And the Traditions itself
One thing that I appreciate about this film is that the romance is very understated and played down and I respect that decision immensely as I believe having it be more prevalent in the story would have weakened the film drastically. There are two scenes, both near the end where we see Taka look at Algren as she is about to sleep and she closes the partition to her bedroom, and I remember having a huge sigh of relief as that was the perfect thing to do. The second scene was when Taka was dressing Algren in her husband's armour and you could palpably feel the emotion between them and then they had one very light kiss and nothing more and again that was beautifully handled and could easily have been completely ruined
I recommend Magy watching a Hong Kong comedy movie called 唐伯虎點秋香 (Flirting Scholar) , its so popular comedy in China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam … even though this movie 30years ago. Now, many teenage watch it still feel funny. This movie became a legend. The main actor is Stephen Chow, he is famous actor, director until now.
It’s such a great movie and I would highly recommend reacting to Swords of vengeance: Fall of Ako castle which involves the 47 ronin (masterless samurai) exacting their revenge, it’s in Japanese language with subtitles
Paul Mooney: "First, they have "The Mexican" with Brad Pitt, now they have "The Last Samurai" with Tom Cruise. Well, I've written a film, maybe they'll produce my film. The Last N*gga on Earth, starring Tom Hanks. How about that?"
You need to watch and react to Memoirs of a Geisha, it's such an incredible movie. It gives an insight to that world, which was a big part of the Japanese culture before too. It keeps teaching us how incredible their culture is and the movie is really good. The same actor is in it, Ken Watanabe and he has a fantastic role

@24:06 it's not totally innocent. They just made love right there, with their eyes, their touch, their hug, their kiss. This scene was much more intimate and delicate and intense than if the director showed them actually having sex. It was so special. Something that is lost today...people think of sex and forget all the rest.
It says a lot about Algren's growth and how much the Samurai grew to respect him in the scene where the city guards cut off Katsumoto's son's hair. I mean he just stood there stoically as they insulted him and didn't move one bit, but when they attacked Algren, when he tried to stop them, he went right for his sword.

Wow, that's interesting. I thought the character was completely made up
Nice. Thanks for that info.
There're also another French Naval officiers, Eugène Collache or Henri Nicol, who rallied Jules Brunet during this period.
There was also an African slave who ended up in Japan by European visitors. Had also became a samurai and gave his life to save his master.

He may have at last found some small measures peace that we all seek few of us ever find.
In the meantime, keep’em coming!!
hermosas chicas, excelente reaccion saludos desde Lima Perú..🥰💚💚💋
Even after seeing this movie hundreds of times I still have the urge to break in tears. The story is amazing!
Tom Cruise is one of THE best actors ever!! He really gets into his role so well.
One of my favorite movies of all time!
He's a drunkard and suffers from a condition we only really understand more about now as PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) sometimes referred to in military circles as shell shock
Its nice sight when Toms character and story moves this emotions in You - this is how Men are - not boys - Men.
10 months later I thought I saw this reaction already, guess not!! I love the way Magy kinda glares off camera with that 😏 look, ya'll notice that?? 😍...and Laura fresh face?? Seriously FLAWLESS beauty, it hurts!!! 😢 lmfaooo
Lyrics: Hey I'm Maggie and this is BURGER 🤣🍔

"Im magy, and this is:"
"Waga"
🤣
Love lauras smile :)
A movie I recommend would be a series called IP Man. Donnie Yen is the main actor. Great movie based on the guy who trained Bruce Lee
❤❤❤ I'm happy to see your reactions throughout the movie. I'm also glad to see that there are STILL people who know the significance of HONOR. It has been a big component of my life since childhood. I started learning about it when I was 10 years old.
WHEN YOU SEE GATLING AND HOWITZER THAT SHOOT IS WHAT HAPPENED TO RED INDIANS BUT THERE IS NO RETURN
Part 2 would be : All the samurai have died and the hero returns to the widows' village. Then he impregnated the hundreds of widows and his grandchildren attacked Pearl Harbor.
You young Ladies would love "The Last of the Mohicans"
Harakiri is a samurai honor. It has a different meaning than European executions. This act is an act of respect. It was a shame to live in spite of losing.
Seppuku.
Harakiri is an insulting term used by gaijin - foreigners.
I'm sorry, I don't want to be disrespectful, just to add to your valuable comment.
Childhood memories this movie is.
26:11 "What happened to the warriors at Thermopylae" (re) the awesome movie *300*
The Last Jedi was really sad because it was Disney officially killing off the last tiny shred of dignity Star Wars had left.
Idk if anyone has said it, but Tom Cruise’s character is going through withdrawal when he’s asking for sake
Maggy is very🫠attractive
What a film ❤❤❤❤❤
finally! a reaction that realized the white tiger from katsumotos vision at the beginning! this sets off the whole movie and is the main reason he is taken into custody and not killed! great catch girls!
I absolutely love this movie. Very well done.
The end gets me every time.
Which ultimately led to America liberating 🇫🇷
I love this movie it's 1 of my favourites, thank you both for the video I love your reactions 😁
Watch Tom Cruise again in A Few Good Men.
Would love to see you guys react to Crouching tiger Hidden dragon, think it would resonate very well with you both.
Hi Miss Laura & Magy !!! Hope you Have many Tissues Ready !!!
As Always the like button 🔘 has been Illuminated 😁👍👍😎
これが侍の散り方や~~😭
Your reactions were great Lady’s , Thanks👍✌️
You two should watch "Anna and the King" Trust me. Your gonna love it. And Legends of the Fall. Have tissues ready for both. it's rough, but worth it.
Great reaction!! Please do the following movies: 'Apollo 13 - 1995', 'Apollo 18 - 2011', 'Batman - 1989', 'Batman Returns - 1992', 'Below - 2002', 'Equilibrium - 2002', 'Demolition Man - 1993', 'Dredd - 2012', 'GoldenEye - 1995', 'Halloween - 1978', 'Kong: Skull Island - 2017', 'Mortal Kombat - 1995', 'Superman - 1978', 'The X-Files: Fight The Future - 1998', 'Warcraft - 2016'.
I am writing this to help out magy and this video and this channel with the algorithm ♥️✌️😘😊
I'm glad you ladies love this movie I saw this movie day one when it came to theaters I washed it six times and theaters the scene at the end with the horses and then riding into battle the entire concrete at the theater or shaking until powerful the base was from those horses feet when they're riding into battle at the end of the movie it was this is a beautiful Masterpiece of a storyline Tom Cruise was a phenomenal job I will tell you how he lived

If you liked this, I recommend Hidalgo and War Horse. Also recommend Black Beauty (1994 version)
If you girls loved The Last Samurai, just try watch Hidalgo (2004). It's a incredible story too, you will love it!
Yes! I love Hidalgo!
Great review, this one makes me cry every time.
@24:06 it's not totally innocent. They just made love right there, with their eyes, their touch, their hug, their kiss. This scene was much more intimate and delicate and intense than if the director showed them actually having sex. It was so special. Something that is lost today...people think of sex and forget all the rest.
Depression is gone when i see laura.
Edit: good movie and music in the movie
❤
@Magic Magy Много си сладка
