Great review of your truck choices. Long-beds rule - no problems backing with >90 degrees; storage is tremendous. Take out my Anderson hitch and I have 8' to carry anything I want.

Gen-Y Executive hitch with the B&W ball directly in the bed is way safer. You get the Torsion aspect plus it won't fold up like the Anderson 👍

I ordered my '21 F350 for some of the reasons you did. Since we do not have any kids traveling with us, I ordered mine with a short bed & extra cab (not a crew cab). In a pinch the 1 or 2x a year someone rides back there it works fine. The shorter wheelbase & overall length are great! I can park it anywhere almost any lot. It fits in my garage as well. So much easier to back our tt in tight spots as well. This is my 4th one in 26 yrs & I do not regret it.

FYI. A mega cab S.B is almost the same as a crew cab L.B for length.
Also in the fuse box, there is a fuse that you can switch the key on power vs always power on. There is 3 terminals and you just have to move it over one terminal.

I run the same truck only 2021 and love it. In Canada we are not allowed to have a extra free flow tank. It must be a manual pump, or powered pump system. I wanted to install one like you have .... BUT.... filling when driving will upset the computer system on the newer trucks. Therefore you need to stop, then add fuel so therefore I stop for fuel when I get to 1/4 tank so every 3 to 4 hours. The one item we have is our hand radios so my wife can watch our top clearance (rear camera can't see about it) and stumps don't show up well so my wife will go to the back and let me know everything is okay. We pulled into one site late in the afternoon and the rains had come down hard. While backing in my wife yelled for me to stop and pull ahead NOW. We found out the prior RV had sunk on the site and was pulled out and they just filled in the holes. We pulled out our extra 2"X6"X6' boards, backed in avoiding the holes and backed onto the boards for safety and added our big blocks to our 6 hydraulic legs . When we pulled out 8 days later our boards were 2" into the gravel. 2021 Columbus 388FK wide body.

Bummer that you can’t use the tank in Canada. We use our phones to communicate but when we don’t have service the walkie talkies come in handy!

The nice thing about the short bed GM trucks is that the hitch is still far enough back that you don't need a slider 99% of the time. We've been on the road 3 years with ours with a non sliding hitch with no problems. You can't make a full 90 deg turn, but you can get pretty close.
That being said, Ram is the only one who makes a short bed dually.

For us we went truck first because we were adamant we were not having a long bed or dually. Yes, it means we need an autoslide hitch but that for us is the only downside. We have a 10speed diesel and love it. So far mountains have not been a problem and neither is driving round town, parking, banks. We spend the majority of our time in the northeast so having the smaller truck - width and length- is definitely better for the day-to-day living. We only have the one vehicle so it needed to do everything for us. No regrets.

We decided on getting the truck first. We had an idea of the size of 5th wheel we wanted & my only requirement for the truck was that it can pull the 5th wheel up the Canadian Rockies hills without holding up traffic. So since it’s a monster we weren’t restricted in what 5th wheel we could tow.

  • @kcwerv

We have a 2022 Ram Limited 3500 Dually Long Bed with Airbags with the 4.10 ratio on it and a topper on it to pull our 30 Foot Airstream Classic. The bed holds our Electric Bikes and our 8 Foot Kayaks and our generator with a 30 lb. tank for the generator when needed. I just installed a DC to DC charger to make us less dependent on a generator. We take 3 to 4 month trips from July (get away from the Texas summer heat) through the end of October each year. I went from a 1/2 ton to this truck when we had our 25 foot Airstream and I was always over payload. I decided to upgrade to a truck where I would never have to worry about payload again. Parking can be a challenge, but you adapt to it quickly and we find it is a good trade off for the benefits the truck offers in towing and feeling safe.

We think so, you definitely have to drive intentionally & think ahead. We picked up our 2023 Ram 3500 Laramie longbox diesel dually last March and love it. Hubs wanted the dually diesel for the stability pulling a fifth wheel. I can’t remember the ratio but he promised me that it’ll have no issues driving up our Rockies.

You definitely have the right truck for your family and your needs. I will say that the wheel base of a long bed crew cab ram is only 9" longer than your mega cab but the 8 foot bed will be a tradeoff of interior space.

    • @LessJunkMoreJourney
      @LessJunkMoreJourney  7 месяцев назад

I don’t know if the 9 inches would make much of a difference but it would be nice to have a full 8ft bed.

  • @mavrick0pm

I've been running with a 17 3500 mega cab for 7 years now and use the Reese goosebox and have had zero issues with turning radius with a trailer. I'd highly suggest going to that and ditching the hitch setup you have now. You won't regret it. And if you are that concerns about the angle you can turn, you can add the gen-y goosepuck 5" offset ball which will give you more room for turning with the 5th wheel.

as someone who has had a long bed regular cab for 5 years, you get used to it, though im planning on getting a 95 f250 extended cab long bed pretty soon, its bigger than what i have now, and i dont really need it, but its probably going to be a good deal and i want a different second vehicle. however, even though it is not a dually, im now thinking about what its capabilities are as far as towing and hauling goes. i dont need much and i wont be towing too much with it, but it would be nice to have that ability.
also, as far as your concerns with long bed vs short bed trucks go, a longer wheelbase vehicle will have a much smoother ride, especially while towing because you can get more leverage and theres more to absorb the impact of bumps, for example, my truck is 40 years old, i have a larger heavy duty bumper on it, which makes it about 20 feet bumper to bumper, its all leaf sprung and the shocks are starting to wear out, but it still handles bumps way better than my brother's cj-6 or even his fiesta ST. its simply due to size.
its also why even though the 90s/early 2000s jeep wranglers and jeep cherokees have such different tow ratings even though as far as drivetrain options go, you can spec both models out with the exact same engine, transmission and axle gear ratio. the cherokee can tow twice the amount of the wrangler with the same exact options because its a larger vehicle

@@LessJunkMoreJourney yup, there are pros and cons to every decision a person has to make, oftentimes they are very cut and dry, while other times, they arent so obvious, and the consequences of your choices may not reveal themselves until long after its too late to turn back.
im sure i dont have to warn you about the huge design flaw of the mega cab short bed option when towing a 5th wheel/gooseneck trailer either. ive seen a few of those trucks damaged in the same spot for the same reason

Get a medium duty….i had a 2021 Chevy dually and it pulled my 43 ft Montana High Country great but went ahead and traded it for a 2021 slightly used Sport Chassis about 9 months ago and would not go back to a dually. It pretty well fits anywhere my long bed 4door dually did. I also have piece of mind on stopping and control of my rig….oh yeah it turns extremely sharp compared to the dually.

Love your videos. I have a lighter camper than yours and we just downsized from a fiver to a travel trailer. My truck is a 2017 Chevy 2500 Duramax crew cab with a long bed. We ordered the truck more for what we didn't want than for what we wanted. We didn't want four wheel drive, dual wheels, carpet, short bed. I wanted the long bed because at the time the fuel tank was bigger than the short bed and because with a long bed you don't need that expensive problematic sliding hitch. I don't have any problem parking in narrow spaces. Because it's long I do need to find a side by side parking space to make that turn into the spot. It's easier to back in sometimes. We love our truck and it has given us many long miles over the years. It's jerked our campers over every mountain range in the lower 48 and has traveled safely from coast to coast and border to border many times...we are road running Meanderthals after all.

I have a ram 3500 crew cab dually long bed. I wish i would've got a eam 4500 or 5500 they have a wide front axle that turns sharper hence better turing radius. The extra payload capacity would be nice I'm always really close on my drive axle weight rating.

I have a 2015 ram 2500, it has 3.42's with and with 35's tires I could feel the transmission slipping to move our 364BHL. I have been planning on re-gearing it, I do plan to keep the 35's...
3.90's would be PERFECT (but not available) and I have been going back and forth between 3.73's and 4.10's. You just settled it for me, 4.10's it is!
Also, check the wheelbase of your Mega-short vs a Crew-long
I doubt that I am that much longer than you.

So I must ask - didn’t you hear all of the semi trucks and the rumble strips all night long when you slept at Lane Orchards?
We absolutely love Lane Orchards itself - we even spent $100 in peach products there. 😂 but that was probably one of our worst nights sleep ever! We had the sound machine going, etc. But those rumble strips were so noisy. We parked right about where you were.
Just curious - because maybe we just had a bad night, and we should try it again.

Are there any magnetic gadgets that will keep objects off the top of the dashboard and yet still within glance view of the driver? I really don't like the idea of obstructing my full view forward thru the windshield. I would think it'd be safer to mount visual aids/reference devices somehow from the top of the windshield down, rather than the bottom of the windshield up, as a driver very rarely needs to check space above the vehicle as much as having a clear and constant view of the road and vehicles/conditions ahead.
