So I'm happy to report, Audrey, that Muslims are still interested in Sanskrit!

Temple have a value for Hindus than mosque were for Muslim
Mosque was just a congregational prayer place for Muslim but temple were the power house from where rebels used to start against the kingdom ,and the idol used to be seen as God in material , so where ever any King has to supress the revolt or defeat any other kingdom they used to destroy the idol which would destroy the moral of the army seeing the God been broken
Even Hindu king prior to Islam practiced it
Read about it in books of Richard Eaton who has written books on temple destruction
So it was natural for Aurangzeb to move on that method which originated from Hindu kings this is not butchery

Read the Islamic invaders' and mughal rulers' own historians e.g quote from the Tazjiyatu L Amsar (historical chronicle of conquests of Alauddin Khilji): ''''They went by daily marches through the hills, from stage to stage, and when they arrived at their destination at early dawn they surrounded Kambdyat, and the idolaters were awakened from their sleepy state of carelessness and were taken by surprise, not knowing where to go, and mothers forgot their children and dropped them from their embrace. The Muhammadan forces began to "kill and slaughter on the right and on the left unmercifully, throughout the impure land, for the sake of Islam," and blood flowed in torrents.''

The Dehra of Keshava Rai was demolished in the month of Ramzan, 1080 A.H. (13th January - 11th February 1670) by Aurangzeb’s order. “In a short time, by the great exertion of the officers, the destruction of this strong foundation of infidelity was accomplished and on its site a lofty mosque was built at the expenditure of a large sum.” To the author of Maasir-i-‘Alamigiri, the accomplishment of this “seemingly impossible work was an “instance of the strength of the Emperor’s faith.” Even more disgraceful was transporting the idols to Agra and burying them under the steps of the mosque of the Begum Sahib “in order to be continually trodden upon.” He even changed the name of the sacred city of Mathura, held in highest respect by the Hindus since time immemorial, to Islamabad, revealing his utter insensitivity towards their feelings.

The Mughal empire was among the richest in the world with the greatest number of poor citizens, with 61.5% of the total revenue being for just 655 individuals during Shah Jahan's reign and 30% for top 25 during Akbar's reign, with the emperor himself taking anywhere from 5-25, as described by Abraham Eraly in his book 'The Mughal World'
