It's very freeing to have permission to paint with abandon and not worry about strict accuracy. With that freedom, I was able to gather the courage to paint the illustrations for my new book. I stumbled across your channel quite a while back after a search for “whimsical watercolor.” My 8 year old granddaughter became obsessed with your birds and during each visit, she asks that we carve out time to watch and paint along with “Ms. Diane and her chicken friends!” I cherish this time together. She is such an animal lover, her face lights up any time the roosters crow or you mention your dogs, cats, sheep, etc. Your teaching style is so relaxed and easy it really takes the fuss and fear out of trying. But what I’ve come to appreciate most of all is your communication style which you talked about on a recent video. It is raw, real, in the moment and filled with unintentional humor. You’re a gifted storyteller!

When I’m not with her, I will often watch your videos until your soothing voice helps me fall asleep. At Christmas my granddaughter was visiting me for several days and she always wants to sleep with me. One night she could not go to sleep so I handed her my phone and I just knew in no time at all, we would both slip off to The Land of Nod. It worked beautifully for me but several hours later, I woke up and she was still looking at your videos!!! “Nonnie, are you awake,” she asked. After expressing my surprise that she was still awake, she proceeds to show me the four Christmas paintings she wants to do the next day. We frame them and she gave them as gifts. She chose to give me the red birds and holly as a reminder that even though she is far away, she wants me to know that she loves me. I cherish it.

Especially after watching all of Tamsin’s videos of your farm. I am currently watching a mom & dad bluebird nesting in two birdhouses on my back porch. The baby sticks her beak out once in awhile and my dad built the houses. He would be thrilled to see this. I use tins just to travel. Thanks for all you do. You’re keeping me sane this year!

You have changed the way I feel when I paint. I used to struggle with landscapes but now after watching your whimsical style. Now instead of feeling almost defeated, I love to paint and try to do it whenever my time allows. Never underestimate your reach into the world. Thank you for all you do.
Bless you for your generosity. I love my Reubens paints. I understand your preference for tube paints. I buy tubes also but put the colors in half pans and cure them. The kid in me tends to just go wild when I squeeze the tube😅. (I used a fourth of a tube on one picture) I would say pans are best for the first few years. I hope the pollen settles and you feel better soon.❤

Diane, I love your videos and chats. I decided to try my hand at painting after loosing both my parents in 2022, 8 months apart. Last year I lost my aunt. I decided to try, even if my paintings were no good. I thought for years that I will be wasting my time, and money, but it was the best decision ever. I absolutely love every minute I spend being creative. They aren’t masterpieces, but my family think they are good. At the beginning of my journey I got hooked on doing it “this or that” way. Then I watched one of your videos. A whole new creative world opened up. Thank you so much for sharing your amazing talent, and inviting us in to be part of your daily happenings.

Hi Diane, Oh, this was so very captivating just watching and listening rather than trying to paint while listening. I was so amazed at the realism in painting the bird nest and the eggs. At the end the eggs just jumped out at you as real bird eggs do in a real nest. I am learning more constantly and I liked the effect of the acrylic pens. I would have never thought of that addition...but then I am just a beginner. Thanks for keeping everything fun and interesting.
What a sweet little bird nest you found. I guess I have a "thing for birds". I started collecting these silly bird figures a couple years ago, and now I have over 100 of them. 😂 Love to watch you paint birds!

Your birds are my favorite to paint. The realistic ones, sure, but I really like the whimsical ones. Not having to be accurate with colors or details is very satisfying.

The way you built up the bird’s nest and highlighted the eggs is inspiring. It is something that I have struggled with. Mine just look overworked. I watch every episode, and have learned so much. I was not able to study art formally in college and always felt my work was not good enough. Although I’ve taken many classes and workshops and draw and paint daily, thanks to you I am finally feeling so much better about what I do. Thank you Diane for being an inspiration and a mentor.

Hi Diane! I'm so sorry you have that hay fever. It's no fun carrying on when you don't feel very good! Aren't birds amazing creatures...the nest is so intricately made and Golden Retriever hair would make a very soft place for the eggs and babies! Love this painting ...your birdies and the nest are beautiful. Your suggestion to let a painting rest for awhile while going on to another painting is a really good one for me (I tend to get too intense when I'm working on a painting that means a lot to me, and maybe even overwork it sometimes) Thank you so much for all your suggestions and teaching. I have really improved because of you, and you inspire me to keep on painting (I even created myself a little studio today...whew... a lot of work, but I did it!) Anything you do with birds in it is always a favorite of mine. Right after watching I went out to my back porch and found a squirrel stealing a washcloth from the table. I watched as it scooted across the yard and scurried up the our big live oak carrying it. It's building a nest. I had to think maybe Diane can paint a squirrel nest with little baby squirrel faces peeping out one of these days.

Wow, those paints are really pretty. I've really enjoyed watching you paint, especially the birds, which i love. I'm a huge bird lover. We feed our birds under a covered area just outside our conservatory saving them from the birds of prey.... We currently have Mrs Blackbird on her second nest right near our conservatory door. She's really trusting of me and comes looking for me when she'd like some food. It makes me smile so much as she's looking at me. while I'm watching you paint birds. I didn't realise how engrossed I'd become with your painting, I love the way you encourage us and that it doesn't matter if we feel we've made a mistake or we're not good enough. or simply changed our mind. Hello Diane, my first time here live from Missouri, USA…..I love your tutorials. I paint with my 8yr old in a journal, we each have our own. When I’m gone she’ll have a memory of our time together. I’m 73 yrs.

Hi Diane, Oh, this was so very captivating just watching and listening rather than trying to paint while listening. I was so amazed at the realism in painting the bird nest and the eggs. At the end the eggs just jumped out at you as real bird eggs do in a real nest. I am learning more constantly and I liked the effect of the acrylic pens. I would have never thought of that addition...but then I am just a beginner. Thanks for keeping everything fun and interesting.

Your birds are my favorite to paint. The realistic ones, sure, but I really like the whimsical ones. Not having to be accurate with colors or details is very satisfying.

The way you built up the bird’s nest and highlighted the eggs is inspiring. It is something that I have struggled with. Mine just look overworked. I watch every episode, and have learned so much. I was not able to study art formally in college and always felt my work was not good enough. Although I’ve taken many classes and workshops and draw and paint daily, thanks to you I am finally feeling so much better about what I do. Thank you Diane for being an inspiration and a mentor.

Hi Diane! I'm so sorry you have that hay fever. It's no fun carrying on when you don't feel very good! Aren't birds amazing creatures...the nest is so intricately made and Golden Retriever hair would make a very soft place for the eggs and babies! Love this painting ...your birdies and the nest are beautiful. Your suggestion to let a painting rest for awhile while going on to another painting is a really good one for me (I tend to get too intense when I'm working on a painting that means a lot to me, and maybe even overwork it sometimes) Thank you so much for all your suggestions and teaching. I have really improved because of you, and you inspire me to keep on painting (I even created myself a little studio today...whew... a lot of work, but I did it!) Anything you do with birds in it is always a favorite of mine. Right after watching I went out to my back porch and found a squirrel stealing a washcloth from the table. I watched as it scooted across the yard and scurried up the our big live oak carrying it. It's building a nest. I had to think maybe Diane can paint a squirrel nest with little baby squirrel faces peeping out one of these days.

Wow, those paints are really pretty. I've really enjoyed watching you paint, especially the birds, which i love. I'm a huge bird lover. We feed our birds under a covered area just outside our conservatory saving them from the birds of prey.... We currently have Mrs Blackbird on her second nest right near our conservatory door. She's really trusting of me and comes looking for me when she'd like some food. It makes me smile so much as she's looking at me. while I'm watching you paint birds. I didn't realise how engrossed I'd become with your painting, I love the way you encourage us and that it doesn't matter if we feel we've made a mistake or we're not good enough. or simply changed our mind. My dear Diane, I have been watercolor painting now for about a year and a half. I ran across you on line and was amazed at how easy you made watercolor painting for everyone. Diane, it was so therapeutic watching you paint this bird's nest and your gorgeous foliage. I love the way you dotted the eggs and the video sound with that was oddly satisfying, if that makes sense.
