      @@philmoufarrege I’ve only been singing for 2 years. Trained consistently by stretching it for about 6-9 months from another vocal coach on YT. Doing exercises for almost a year head on was key for great progress from zero experience.
      Now it’s once every week or so if work & family life allow it. I was looking at your program first actually along with the older videos that made such sense for this non technical musician. My background is piano. Thankfully I know general music theory & have good pitch so picked up that part well.
      One issue is environmental with a very harsh winter that is clogging & drying my chords. It takes me a good hour or so to finally feel warmed up to sing. Also, I learned I can mimic singers very well. Singing off the cuff in “my version” of a popular song is always unimaginative. When I hear an accomplished singer I can copy what they do but I cannot come up with the creativity & technique myself. But it has helped me sound more solid & developed as a beginner. But is that a natural normal start?
      I’ve been stretching chest more intensely as you’ve encouraged all singers to do. It has really put some more vocal weight behind my lighter & brighter tone. Plus I can back off as you’ve said from more intense singing & simply sound better since the stretching has strengthened my chest voice. That’s my weakest point. Head voice soars effortless for me along with the higher mix range.
      Lastly, the main thing that is stopping me from really getting better is having no sense of support when singing. It just comes & goes. I learned how to do it more effectively from your breathing video; especially through the back rib cage area. That was huge to realize! Now it’s doing it consistently, knowing the sensation…all that is what’s escaping me. Not giving up though. Went from barely able to sing to making a lot of progress. Still, I can’t breathe for peanuts. It’s like a balloon fizzling out. Thanks for reading my essay!

    I have got to say. For months I tried to make my head voice sound full and powerful. Because I thought after I hit my highest note in chest that's it. Yesterday I hit a not 1.5 steps above my highest. And I am quickly realizing that I need to just strenghten my chest voice as much as I possibly can. I searching how to do it in a safe way and you are awesome. Edit: Just hit a G4. Absolutely nuts. Yes it was a little bit "pulled" or kind of strained but only a little bit. I sustained it and it didn't crack. I am working on my vowels. Btw I know I am doing something right because before I could barely hit E4 and it was always cracking and my voice hurt, afterwards it was hoarse from just 3 attempts. I have practiced this for 3 days now and I haven't hurt myself. The plan is this, learn to sing, get rich & by my momma a house. :)

    Hello Phil…! You probably might’ve not run into a comment like this before, so basically I had a viral infection that unfortunately altered my voice, quite a horrible time for me. Before that I had a slightly decent vocal range before getting sick, but I wasn’t that good of a singer. Now my speaking voice is much higher than it originally was I assume that’s severe vocal damage from an illness. I recovered from having so illness but it still left my voice changed, it’s to the point where I sound extremely child-like so with that type of voice how do I strengthen it…?

    • @philmoufarrege

      sorry to hear about the illness affecting your voice. it's frustrating for sure. I've lost my voice due to illness several times, and just resting my voice never brought it back. I had to physically restrengthen it back up, almost like starting again with singing. in regards to HOW you strengthen your voice. that depends on a lot of things. That depends what your current capabilities are, and your starting position and what you will do will be different. Then there are multiple phases or "levels" to the strengthening depending on what your goals are (strengthening the voice up to high C is different than strengthening it up to F4). Here are 3 videos that give an overview of some of these important phases:

    • @philmoufarrege

      Can you see how he can just go up and down and have the voice hold together in a solid chest voice like that on autopilot? That is standard I make sure all my students get to before they start softening the voice and removing the excessive squeeze. It is a gradual thing that happens though. And you still have to make sure you have ACCESS to that strong squeeze at all times as it is the PRECURSOR to the softening/relaxing phases that come after.

    Hey Phil! Just a question here. Last month I suffered a horrible flu bug and got myself cured in 2 weeks. However, during that period I lost my voice for a few days (around 4-5 days if I reckon), and although it has returned, my second bridge around Ab4-A4 has become very inconsistent after that. Also, after practicing I tend to get cough reflexes that I have to stop even though I do not hurt myself or apply too much effort (to not end up being hoarse).
    Does this sort of inconsistency mean that I still have to rest my voice longer? And if so, how long does it take for the voice to go back to its normal shape again? Thanks Phil!

    • @philmoufarrege
      @philmoufarrege  Год назад +1

      just resting the voice won't always return it back to where it was. sometimes you may have physically lost a coordination or a strength and it needs to be restrengthened. I got sick a few months ago and completely lost my voice entirely. and resting didn't bring it back, I had to physically restrengthen it and it took about a month.

    phil, ive been following your channel for quite some time now but theres something i still dont understand completly,
    is there a point on the male belting range lets say eb4 to D5 per say where the voice goes to a head voice dominant position while sounding chesty? if so wheres that point, ive been singing for so many years and i sound rlly good up to a4 but past there some days i will have like a mindset of staying in chest voice and sometimes it works but its rlly inconsistent and some days i will just feel like its impossible to carry any chest voice higher than a4 or even lower.
    Does it have to do with my voice not being rested enough or something? somtetimes i feel like my falsetto is disapearing and getting too airy...
    what are your advices for me? and trust me man i want to save money so i can take lessons with you in the future.
    But im quite desperate already. Pls Phil give me some advices, you are the only vocal teacher i trust, lova ya man

    • @philmoufarrege
      @philmoufarrege  Год назад +3

      this is a great question. You can shift how "head dominant" you are by how loud you sing. The louder you sing you won't become head dominant until higher up. And if you sing softly in your full voice you can be more head dominant super low like even down around middle C. So I see it more as "singing softly vs singing powerfully". The way I get people to train this is first grow a strong powerful chest voice with a stable larynx. Then start learning how to gradually use less volume without going to falsetto. And using less and less volume without the voice falling apart. it takes time for the voice to "let" you do this. it happens gradually. I have people develop all of this with the chest voice though not bridging into falsetto.
      With your other question about taking chest voice up and resting etc. if your voice is not well recovered then yes it can definitely affect the vocal range. I would say a good thing for you to do is to check your falsetto daily and try to get it sounding crystal clear. Then after that, start working your chest voice and controlling it. Take mini breaks when you feel like your voice is not responding as well as it was before. like 5 min rest then come back and try again and it should be better than before not worse.
      You should check out these 2 videos about the chest voice:

    Hey! First of all thanks for all the amazing content on your channel. I discovered it recently and have learned a lot about my voice. 👌
    I have a question. Once the strength is there, how do you maintain it? Is it enough if you warm up by singing some scales and then just sing songs that are challenging enough, or does maintaining the strength usually require dedicated practice sessions.

    • @philmoufarrege
      @philmoufarrege  Год назад +2

      There are multiple phases to building strength and each phase builds on the next. So for example if you can already do "phase 4 coordination" for example then it automatically means you already have the prerequisites of phase 3 and 2 and 1 in place. If there is an issue with phase 4 then you start working backwards to see if there are any weak links in phase 3 or 2 or 1. So maintaining is more of doing daily checks to see what your weak links are and if everything is working then awesome, if not, you go into diagnosis mode.

    Nice video. Any advice for people that easily run of breath when singing very long phrases?

    • @philmoufarrege
      @philmoufarrege  Год назад

      the answer to this can become more complicated than you realize: if you feel like you're LIMITED to having to sing very loudly then it will make you run out of breath faster. So being able to control your volume so that you can back off the volume to conserve stamina is key, however most struggling singers feel like they CAN'T do this, that they are LOCKED into singing very loudly. So this is where learning how to keep a stable larynx and good cord compression is key (the ugly squeeze thing I show in this video) because if you do not have this then you won't be able to keep the voice stable at lower volumes and you'll feel like you're stuck in a super loud volume. It took me years to figure this key thing out and I had to re-train my voice to learn how to do this.

    How does Paul McCartney sing these notes so quietly? He seems to be in full voice, not mixed. I cannot sing it in full voice without pushing a lot more volume on it: ruclips.net/video/wXTJBr9tt8Q/видео.html&ab_channel=TheBeatlesVEVO

    • @philmoufarrege
      @philmoufarrege  Год назад +1

      yeah, learning to sing softly without being super loud took me many years to figure out. I have quite a linear structure I take singers through to develop it.
      So usually you'll learn to hit the notes loudly at first. Then if you try to back off the volume, the voice will start getting shaky and wobbly.
      This is because the larynx is too high, so I first have to have people learn to reduce the volume while keeping quite a bit of vocal cord compression in the voice to keep the voice stable. At first this can sound really squeezed. but the volume will be lower and it will be stable. The effort level can feel HIGHER than singing louder at first.
      Once they get good at this I then have them start GRADUALLY learning how to loosen the squeeze so the voice can sound softer without losing the stability and control. Takes some time to get this.

  • @jm2389
    @jm2389 Год назад

    So when practicing like this, what is the signal to back off and rest? Should we stay away of hoarseness, itchiness and pain? How big of a dosage/how long each day doing exercises like shown in the video to develop the voice?

    • @philmoufarrege
      @philmoufarrege  Год назад

      yes you should stay away from hoarseness/itchiness/pain. but it can be tricky because sometimes those signs mean you're doing something wrong, but sometimes you can encounter them while you're experimenting and finding the right coordinations. I definitely went through phases of irritating my voice when trying to figure out what to do. You just have to be careful if you encounter those symptoms, stop, rest for a bit, retry it. if it's still happening then make adjustments.
      as for how long/dosage small sessions with little rests are good. Spend a few minutes experimenting then take a little break for a few mins, come back. Spread it out throughout the day is good. Once the voice is adequately strengthened there are other things that are needed to be done, so the things I show here are only a small part of the entire process.

    • @philmoufarrege
      @philmoufarrege  Год назад

      yes a lot of people do think this unfortunately and it's what keeps a lot of people from making any progress. So many singers come to me after struggling for years getting nowhere and once we start strengthening the voice properly they skyrocket. I was in a similar boat with my own voice too. I couldn't develop any kind of vocal range, stability, ability to control volume etc until I spent time doing the things I've shown in the video, and I tried for YEARS doing it other ways.
      the reality is I have helped numerous people repair vocal damage and take their voices further with this very approach so I don't view it as something dangerous in that regard. So I only speak from experience, not from theory.
      What's happening in this strengthening phase is developing the muscles that compress the vocal cords firmly and securely while keeping the larynx stable. And it is what PROTECTS the voice from damage when done properly.
      I like your comment because I'm realizing there's a lot I want to say about this and I think I'll make some videos going a bit deeper into this.
