Whilst I agree that LH is under appreciated I feel that a lot of his lack of success is self inflicted. If he wasn't such a prick to so many people, I think he would have experienced more success. It's a real shame as he has some great songs that deserve a wider audience.
Nearly 20 years ago !!! I remember listening to this on the radio and not being able to get hold of the cd in my town for ages - and so always waiting for it to be played on an indie radio show
Bad Vibes is an excellent book. I had honestly never heard of The Auteurs, but (as explained in the book) they were never very popular in the North Of England! I have also read his 2nd book Post Everything and that is really interesting and laugh-out-loud-funny in parts. Definitely recommend it!
There was, in ascending order of quality, Oasis, Suede, Blur...and, by a fucking mile...The Auteurs. "After Murder Park" is the masterpiece that this track hints at.
This song started Britpop; the New Rose of the 90s. Luke Haines was of the Blank Generation, (30 when he made this), not a Slacker age boy, but Brian James was likewise a bit too old to be a Punk
wallerpaul70 Yes, I heard that, as well. There is a theory that Haines deliberately broke his leg before an Au Teurs tour as he did not want to be "Part of the Scene"
Actually, I was wrong about his age, he was 26 when he made this. I got confused by a reference I took to him arriving in Brixton at the age of 18; this was in 1985, not 1981 as I first thought. This could have been the start of something big with this band but I hear that he had problems writing songs as good as this to maintain the momentum. Another interesting parallel with Brian James. 1993 should have been the start of something big for this crowd.
Not really. You could just as easily say that the Wonder Stuff and Ned's Atomic Dustbin started Britpop. Suede were clearly a David Bowie tribute act. Brett Anderson and the Spiders from Mars got onto Top of the Pops on a nostalgia ticket.
Great sound ! If you like Indie music and find underground artist, I suggest you to discover a new one by writing *"Niko Laetailleurs"* in the you tube search bar. One of my favorite...
To my shame, I only heard this track for the first time today. Now I've got it on loop, what a great song!!
The Auteurs / Luke Haines have to be ( shamefully ) one of the UKs most under appreciated and unrecognised talents of modern times.

@@latitudepost Agreed.
Well, this is much better than I remembered
That's what I was thinking.. But I watched him in an interview he sounds off his rocker

It's funny that Jools Holland is introducing them here. Haines makes it very clear in _Bad Vibes_ that he thinks Squeeze were crap!
Such a great song!
Totally cool performance.
One of my favourite songs of all-time & Luke ‘king curmudgeon’ Haines is an absolute legend
This is great.
SO underrated!
Wonderful - thanks for this, pauldee. He'll always be music's Steerpike, to me!
Such a great band
So many good songs
Should be one one of the greatest Brit bands ever. Shame that not many people know about them these days.
Bad Vibes is a flippin' masterpiece. The best thing to come out of BritPop.
It will be a Legend, in future (-;
greatest band of the 90's!
Reading "Bad Vibes" at the mo, interesting stuff. Always have time for Luke Haines' offerings.

Kitchens!
Later with JH literally hasnt changed in the last 18 years.
Jools only has class and talent on his show. No place for anything else ....
look at him accidentally inventing britpop
So far ahead of their time that they still aren't huge yet. Maybe one day...
Such an underrated 90s group. In a sane world plodders like Oasis would be languishing in obscurity and the Auteurs would be huge
Brilliant book!
Checking out the Vox backline!
Brilliant! I agree, everyone should read Bad Vibes! Great book by Luke Haines!
Done. Bought the follow-up, too - terrific reads.
currently reading it - which why i decided to look up the tracks. Very funny. I highly recommend it to anyone
viva los autuers..fantastico!
yeah, great band, maaaan.
Hey Klaus, where did you get that Tuxedo idea from? ❤❤
Amateur is a word that means "Amante" or in plain english "Lover", so I`m an "amateur" of the Auteurs
The cellist & his Bickerton!
Good tune. Always used to make me laugh when the music press referred to them as The Amateurs.
Raw, brilliant, shyly arrogant, nerve

Ironic as he fuckin hated Britpop..

Suede clearly started Britpop.

Another awesome band doomed by the Grunge Apocalypse.
You want to read Mark E Smiths [The Fall]book!....put Haines in the same room as Smith...watch the sparks fly!
does anyone know the chords for this?
Mainly E minor, B minor, and C.
A bit late, I know . . .
could you possibly enlighten us please
I do.
The lead singer hasn't got that charisma of a Bret Anderson of Suede, but I like his autistic aura

this is up there with Another girl...
Sorry everyone, bit blootered there (blushes hotly).
It is indeed a great read. He is very funny but also quite a nasty piece of work. I wouldn't want to cross him!
not bad. the bass needed a bit more imagination though
Great band criminally overlooked for bands like oasis ?
Decadent song for decadent times.
Bloody abysmal.
Yeah and your da's your ma
Zero chemistry within the band whatsoever. Still good music though.
